How about something like this:

Of course, if it was altered so that MShep was in front of FemShep people'd probably be complaining that they were showing favoritism to him.

Why not back to back, or, split down the middle, half of Femshep's face/body & half of Sheploo.

I think its pretty clear that Mass Effect isn't a co-op game & if they did both female & male shepard from the beginning, they wouldn't even have that problem. As anyone who is exposed to the marketing that Shepard is both of them & you can choose the gender.

Because having two characters taking about as much spotlight on a game cover is usually a sign of a Co-op game.

Or a buddy cop game like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, etc.

Almost all of those have a slightly larger more player controlled character and a small sidekick.

Carrying Sheploo in a backpack is intriguing though.

True it's mostly protagonist+sidekick gameplay (though in Tooie you could play as Kazooie alone in sections) and the cover art also kind of reflects that, but the sidekick is still pretty prominent compared to just being, "background LI chick."

Women will never be equal to men. It's because you're better than us, dimonds are a girl's best friend, man's best friend is a dog. :? you're delicate, precious and perfect. That's why I think it's very important that you all stay inside, if you could cook and clean while you're there, that'd be great. You're better at that than us after all.

I'm pretty sure that sounded very sweet in your head, but the last guy that called me delicate got his nose broken. He wasn't being nice about it, he asked me why I was occupying the bench press at the gym when there was "less delicate" people that needed to use it for real. If women were delicate you can bet your money that we wouldn't be the one's carrying & birthing children, nuff said. And I know a number of guys who are a lot better at cleaning & cooking than I am, especially on the cleaning part. Patriarchy & sexism not only puts down women, but men who like to do or are good at tasks/hobbies deemed "feminine" or "womanly", such as cooking & cleaning.

He's just being a troll.

Try being treated like some delicate, fragile vase who should just cook, clean and look pretty for most of your life and it tends to wear you down.

I'm glad to see that the state of this thread has improved since this morning (other than the occasional tired old kitchen joke). I hope it catches the eye of the devs, and they consider what we have to say.

As you can see by reading through the thread, many of the people here are women, and all of the women here are in favor of female representation on the cover. That really blows a hole in the "men are the only demographic that matters" argument, no? Bioware in particular has a large percentage of female fans, and there's a reason for that: the games are great at representing women respectfully.

And, by the same token, all the people in this thread who are AGAINST the idea of female representation on the cover... are men. So that should put it into perspective for you: these dudes aren't listening to the women. They don't want to hear our opinion. They are truly sexist.

Importantly: while there's nothing wrong with a cover with no protagonist at all, in theory, bringing that up is derailing the discussion. You don't fix a lack of female representation by... continuing to not represent women. Reminds me of people who, when asked their opinion on gay marriage, say "well, actually, I don't think marriage should exist at all." Like, that's a valid viewpoint, but by expressing it in this context you're just pushing our concerns to the side.

A bit extreme when he was loudly making fun of me in public, harrassing me after I asked him nicely to leave me alone & being an overall jerk? No one came to my help, no one came to remove him. So nope, I think breaking his nose got him away from me permanently, as I still see him around, proved my point that I wasn't "delicate", & taught him a lesson.

I support equal representation of not just gender, but different races and sexualities as well.
Seems like whenever these groups are included, it is considered pandering /being PC/ pusing an agenda.
But pandering to dudebros is just normal and accepted.

I like how acceptable it is to sterotype male gamers as dudebros in this thread.
Really showing why you're open-minded people who deserve to have your concerns listend to here, people. Excellent work.

I remember that earlier in this thread, someone made the common (and utterly played-out joke) somewhere along the lines of "gee, you guys are so crazy to want equal representation for EVERYONE, why don't we just put a [black, albino, handicapped, transgender woman] on the cover?" Or whatever list of "minority attributes" they could think of off the top of their head.

The thing is, that'd be great to see. I know it's easy to forget when you're a regular vanilla-ass straight white dude, but people who belong to all of those demographics do exist... and you're not better or more important than them... and representing them isn't unrealistic at all. BECAUSE THEY EXIST.

So yeah. Better representation for women, people of color, disabled people... all of these things would be awesome to see on the cover! And while sexual orientation or gender identity aren't things you can tell just by looking at a person, it'd be great to represent those better in the promotional materials too. Like maybe a trailer featuring a female hero with one of the female love interests... and not just in the context of EA's "look, we have gay people!" promo video, but the actual trailer for a specific game, that includes the queerness without revolving around it.

I feel like I should also respond this this: while a protagonist-less cover is still preferable, this is all in all not a bad solution.

The problem with this would be that it would be taken as forewarding the "gay agenda" and "Shoving homosexuality in people's faces" yada yada.
Plus Fox news and their ilk would totally flip a ****.
I don't think Bioware needs any more PR  headaches.

That didn't happen when EA put out the trailer that I mentioned, which contained nothing BUT homosexuality and was a pretty blatant statement in favor of it. To be honest, I don't think the mainstream media cares very much about video game trailers. It might get some coverage, but Fox is already busy hating video games for the violent and sexual content, and that hasn't had any significant effect.
