Okay guys. Let me ask you a question? Did having a woman on the cover of the box stop you from buying Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm? How about Tomb Raider? Blood Rayne 1 & 2? Bayonetta? Final Fantasy X-2? Final Fantasy XIII? Final Fantasy XIII-2? No it didn't. And if there were a F!Inquisitor on the cover of D3, you wouldn't care either.

Then why does it matter?

PRECISELY. IT DOESN'T

Many women today, many feminist women today like to find issues from nonexistent places such as this one.

Extremists on both sides are dumb, just saying.

The solution is simple.  Do research on a game before purchasing.

Yeah. This works too...Pity many here seem to think people just make impulse purchases or make purchases based on box art.

One does not simply make impulse luxury purchases. One does not simply make purchases based on box art.

Some people care about what's on the cover. Helps them with their headcanon, I guess.

I couldn't care less what's on the cover, really. It's a bit like judging a Christmas Present by the wrapping.

Helps with headcannon?   I don't understand how that would add or take away from the individual's headcannon. Sheploo can be advertised as the the "Shepard", but that isn't my Shepard, you know?

Vice versa.

Okay girls. Let me ask you a question? Did having a man on the cover of the box stop you from buying Mass Effect 1? How about  Bioshock Infinite? Dishonored? Hitman Absolution?  No it didn't. And if there were a M!Inquisitor on the cover of D3, you wouldn't care either.

It goes both ways.

The solution is simple. DO NOT HAVE MALE / FEMALE PC ON THE COVER.

I doubt the Box is gonna have the protagonist on it anyway

If it did, they could just make two versions

It's principle of the thing. The point of the thread is about having more female representation in general. It matters to some people.

An Enchantment Edition is the one thing that could get me to pre-order the game.

Yes they are. As a man it is stupid when I see women in kitchen and women making sandwiches jokes. It is pathetic. I actually never knew that women are supposed to cook better than men because my dad cooks all the food in the house almost all the time & mom is the type that makes a fuss if one ingredient is missing instead of working her way around it. Even my sister..well, she cooked  and it caused the family to get food poisioning.

I only know about this sandwich trope when I got out into the real world. Specifically speaking 2-3 years ago.

Honestly no, having a woman on the cover didn't stop me from buying and playing it, but I found I didn't enjoy playing as Yuna and her skimpy girl band... wasn't interested in that. So kind of a yes at the same time. Granted this was a long time ago.

Does the game itself not have relevence to this issue?  Bioware could just not have a female protagonist, but they choose to because they know, females/males, whomever, would love to RP different types of characters and genders.

Also, are the people complaining about the cover going into DA III as their first game of the series or are they coming from Origins? If Origins...

Yes, Bioware is excellent in this regard.
But the cover is the game's face. It's what everyone sees. If they are going to have the protag on the cover, why not show a woman this time around. They can have the male version on the back. People can flip the cover if they want their box to have a male on the cover.

A woman on the cover of a game like DA:I is never going to happen unless its a double flip side cover, but yes, I am getting sick and tired of generic Hero Dude 101. Bioshcok Infinite probably should have had Elizabeth on the cover somewhere next to whatshisface. I understand playing it safe to broaden the audience, but I believe they just choked. But kudos to The Last of Us Dev team for not folding. If there is a problem its publishers actively trying to keep woman off covers and out of games as the protagonist. Thankfully, BioWare has never had that problem. They still do sing the same mantra as the rest, but they are much better than most.

Diminishing marginal utility.  Many people - particularly young people who don't have to pay their own living expenses - don't perceive $60 as significant.

I'm sorry, but as I wrote before and of this day and age, if you really don't do research on something you want to purchase, then I don't know what to say.  A cover would of been a factor when I was younger and the internet wasn't as lively as it is today, but as of right now, you can see a cover, get the info on the game, see the details *Oh Hey look, I can play as male or female, sweet!*.

Question, what do honestly do with your game after the first week?  Do you spend time looking at the cover, looking at the manual (that probably has a female version in there as well, lol) or do you just let it collect dust after a while?

That is very true and how I went about getting the games I had when I was younger.  Now I'm not in that position and I'm willing to argue many on this thread are not either.

Tomb Raider? You know It probably did.

Blood Rayne 1 & 2?
Yes.

Bayonetta? Yes, I seen the protagonist just  did not want.

Final Fantasy X-2? Final Fantasy XIII? Final Fantasy XIII-2? These 3 are bad examples because they are just awful awful games.

Mind you Mirror's Edge which is one of my favorite games has a female protagonist.

but at the end of the day my opinion doesn't matter, all that matters is the numbers, and the numbers say boxes with dudebro whose right hand holds the gun and the left hand holds the orange shift more units.

End of story.

I'm confused did you not get Bayonetta because of how the protagonist looked? If so you missed out on a damn good game.
