 Ho there wanderer! Stay thy course a moment!

I keep trying to get all the way through BGTutu to ToB, but despite years of sporadic attempts and restarts, I've still never even made it through Chateau Irenicus. :( So, the obvious logical choice is to try again.

I've got a few questions, though. I'm thinking of going either Fighter/Mage or Druid for this playthrough.

For the possible Fighter/Mage, any advice there? I know the basics (buff self, go attack) but are there any real pitfalls?

I keep hearing different things about Druids, though. Some people say they're great, others hate them. Any input there? What about kits? I'm currently thinking about Shapeshifter, using the fix in the BG2 tweaks pack, found here. http://www.gibberlin...aks/content.php

Finally, I'm looking to get some good NPCs in on the action. I was thinking of the Sarah NPC mod; has anyone experience with that? It seems well-regarded, but there are people who hate every mod, so I guess I'm looking for a well-detailed opinion.

Anyway, thanks for reading. Please reply if you have any advice!

Fighter/Mage;
+ Strong melee attack & defence with access to both HLA like GWW and spells like ‘Contingency’ this class is designed to solo well.
- Slow to build and lousily spell progression make you little more than a joke in magic combat.

Druid (Shapeshifter) with Tweaks installed;
I played it once and found it very buggy but that was a while ago so they may have patched it up by now.
+ Again designed to solo but this time you have too role play it.
+ Extremely fast to level up and conducive to a late game career change into Fighter.
- Limited options and people appear to have trouble figuring out what to change into.

I found the Sarah mod to be a very well written female romance but if you want super powerful items or are put off my same sex romance (on paper only) then this mod isn’t for you.

Everyone has their own playing style, but if you are having problems with basic BG2, why not keep it simple, and use a tank (dwarven or half-orc fighter) and play on Normal or Novice with a full party, just so you get through in all the combats of BG2, ToB and Watchers Keep. Once you've seen everything, then branch out on your next run and use a PC mode that better fits the mix of muscle, magic, and stealth that appeals most to you. Another BG2 issue is that Viconia/Edwin are probably the best vanilla clerical/mage magic combo, but the need to keep your reputation low enough to keep them around hurts your store prices. Browsing the cleric/mage Mods for powerful replacements might make your PC's life easier.

Why the various attempts and restarts. Might help others give advice if they know what the issue is.

The various restarts have mostly been due to IRL issues, really. Once I get away from the game for a while I lose interest in whichever character I'm playing, and decide to start over fresh.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I suppose that I'll go Fighter/Mage this playthrough.

A hint for not losing interest, is spending time creatively thinking about personality and background of your character. If you imagine what they are like, how they act, how they feel and react to what's happening to them in the game, you'll be more likely to maintain your interest or being able to rekindle it, than if they're just a class x character with proficiencies y and z. Think of them like the main character in a novel you write yourself. Make them life-like and like-able.

Yeah, I've been trying to do a bit of that.

One last (I think) question: Is it viable to have a Fighter/Mage wear non-Elven Chain armor? Not necessarily optimal, but viable? Would it just mean that I'd have to constantly take off and put on the armor, or are there some good all-day buffs?

The way I play Fighter-Mages, I have them walk around in Scale or Plate armour until he or she has access to level 2 spells and I can make use of the Armour+Blur or Mirror Image spells to protect him in combat. Therefore, until my F/M reaches level 3 as a mage, I use the spell slots for Identify only, treating him like a regular fighter in combat.

Only useful long-term buff I know of is the armour spell and it doesn't stack with regular armour. Invisibility has long duration as well, but gets dispelled as soon as you perform an offensive action.

Stoneskin lasts as long as you want. There are quite a few mage spells that last a number of turns, e.g. spirit armour, protection from fire, protection from magic energy and will turn your character into a souped up fighter for enough time for several combats.

By the time your F/M got those spells, you needn't even bother with putting on your armour before combat, you've become powerful enough to manage without. By that time you will probably have found equipment (bracers, ring of protection, maybe a robe) to heigthen your AC as well, saving Spirit Armour and Protection from Normal/from Magical Weapons for the more difficult fights.
