I think all game over screens are irritating by their very nature. Even the rather novel "game over" scenes in Batman Arkham Asylum/City where various villains mock Batman for dying can get old hat after a while.

To sum up, I'd rather not see a lot of resources invested in game over screens. "Would you like to continue" is sufficient.

Context-sensitive concept art / filtered in-game screenshot demonstrating the hero's failure faded behind the bloodied game-over screen.

Died fighting the Ogre? You see Flemeth kneeling over your body.
Died in the Deep Roads? See your mother weeping in Gamlen's house.
Died fighting Quentin? You see him dancing with your mother.
Died fighting Orsino? You see the Harvester rampaging across the Templar and civilians alike in Kirkwall.

Interesting, doesn't interfere with the player and creepy.

So...what if you die 50 times? Same "you're a loser, and here's what you caused" screen every time? That sounds like a gimmick that would only be good a handful of times, before it became an annoyance.

Pretty much.

When I die, I don't want to watch some cutscene showing how I failed everyone. I just want to load my last save and kick some ass.

OR they could add in a gameover screen that lasts 30 mins... so everytime you die you have to wait 30mins in order to reload the game....

But really the standard game over screen is fine by me.

Oh I know, Perma death. then you don't have to worry about dieing 30 times, you just die once and thats it.

It defintially would have been cool to die and then cut to a scene of varric saying "thats not how it happened" or"no no thats not right". Kind of like the old prince of persia games.

What if Varric himself died in his story?

Varric : " And so there i died with all the rest...."
Cassandra : "Wait...you died?"
Varric : "Yeah, you are talking to a ghost"

Snake? SNAKE. SNAAAAAKKKEEEEEEE.

Ugh, had to get that out of my system. I'd rather just have a "You failed. Retry?" screen. Although sometimes I think a little insult to injury wouldn't hurt.

In DAO, when in the carta base.. Jarvia is like, "Kill them, but keep the pretty one alive. I have plans for her." Something along those lines. It would've been funny if after you fell, you saw your "unconscious" PC get dragged away by some dwarves.

And then get the Game Over screen.
"You failed. Retry?"

How about showing awesome finishing moves by the enemy on our character?

Make it in bullet time to show how our character being decapitated, burned into ash, electric shocked, get shot in the head....

Too Human thought an interesting death animation would be cool too. Look how that went over.

Personally, I rather they get rid of any game over screen and auto load the game quickly.
When I lose I want to jump right back in.

That's the first thing that popped into my head...

Maybe in different "acts" you'll hear different (many) background voices. "It must be protected!" "Who said you can do that..." "Your just a..." and so on speaking almost at the same time.

Unless you want to reload a different save file.

I actually find it quite annoying that there's a "game over" screen AT ALL and it won't just let me hit the quickload button, it has to do the screen and then ask me if I want to load a saved game.  By all means LET people click but if I hit the load button LOAD THE DANG GAME ALREADY.

I think it would be pretty cheesy if they added a narrator like Varric saying: "No, no, that's not what happened."

This is a lot like Prince of Persia, it's not bad. Although we're not dealing with a puzzle/platformer and we can make multiple saves.

I would actually want it to hurry up so you can get back into the game, something drawn out will be annoying if you know what you did wrong and you want to quickly get back in to make it right.

Reminds me of the Arrival DLC for ME2 if you let the countdown timer run out.
