OP, I have to say that before I had exactly same feeling about soloing. You know, did one Gold solo just for the sake of showing myself that I could do it (a Fury, Reapers / Giant, kiting them and bottlenecking them to the LZ, then retreating the ladder, kiting them the control room, and from there to the LZ again, rinse and repeat, the real struggle was not to fall to sleep). Anyhow, now sometime ago, I decided to give it an another try, but this time; no typical soloing setups or the old camping&kiting routine, but instead; try soloing exactly like you'd play normally with your friends or PUGs.
It's been tremendous fun, even if it's quite hard and really intense. There's been many failures*, but it's definitely worth of it, and now I won't stop until I've soloed Plat. Give it a try, it will probably improve you as a player as well, and it's still enjoyable, even if reaching that extraction might seem nigh impossible at the first.
*I am not a great player, so there's no successful runs yet, lol. But, the challenge and enjoyment still makes it worth it, as long as you can tolerate a pretty high failure rate. So far best one was a wave ten failure, get grabbed by a Banshee, after finishing the device hack objective.

I did my gold solos the cheapie way with Kroguard and lolreegar, Geth/Rio, so your solos are more legit than mine :-)

I did both my gold solos as TGI on Geth/Giant, using an arc pistol with incendiary IV.
Took about as long as you for each.

The key is patience. I did mine with only a little liquor in the system, but not so much as to take fool-hardy risks.
