Okay, so I've finished ME1 on Insanity with a level 50 female Shepard
Adept. Since there is no save game editor for ME1 I will have to import
this character as is to ME2. And then I will likely see Ashley in the
intro because of Virmire. But then, can I immediately use the save game editor for ME2 to
change the Virmire decision so that Kaiden was saved instead of Ashley,
and the game will recognize it? So that I can play, see Kaiden in ME2, and then import to
ME3 and have Kaiden on my team? I heard that he is really powerful and not boring.

I think that will work. You will need to look up the plot flags.

This simplest answer is yes, you can do this. But, there are some things that can get tricky with the ME2 editor. First, as soon as you wake up from the Lazarus Project in ME2, make a save (don't use a autosave). Quit out of the game, and open up the ME2 Gibb editor. Open the newly created save (should say something like Save_001.pccsave). You will see a number of "tickable" boxes under the plot area. Here you can choose to have Kaidan alive vs. Ashley. Once you have made your changes, choose to save under a new save name (best is to just do one number over, for example: Save_002.pccsave).

Now, here is where things "may" not be noticeable right away. These changes may not reflect in the current game you are running (easiest way to tell, is if Kaidan now shows up on Horizon). Don't fret, since once you get to ME3, you can double check (or reedit, if necessary) in the ME3 Gibb Editor. The following link has a list of important bools you can manually set in the ME3 editor....the most foolproof way of ensuring that your edits are correct (these included, of course, the Virmire survivor): http://social.biowar...ndex/16199205/1

Hope this helps, and have fun.

**NOTE**
You can choose right after making those gibb editor changes to set the game under the Raw Tab, to "Livetofightanotherday" . Then save, and reimport the save into ME2 (yes, that means you have to restart the game, but if you do it right after waking up from the Lazarus Project you aren't replaying much.) This too should guarantee that your new virmire survivor is reflected correctly.
