I've never played the original Mass Effect. I was thinking of getting the PC version (lacking an XBOX), but then I heard that it had SecuRom copy protection. Refusing to install that virus on my computer, I reluctantly passed it over.

I'm rather interested in ME2, however, but I'm wondering whether or not I should give the original game a chance; aside from getting more backstory and adapted to the gameplay style, I could get transferable characters, rather than relying on the stock "canon" to fill in various details.

I've heard that there's no SecuRom protection on the Steam download, but I prefer having physical copies of my games. Has SecuRom been removed from the more recent retail versions?

i do not know for the PC but i hear from one review that the whole custom gameplay did not have much of an impact as they were led to believe by bioware...i bet its just a character here or there and dialogue that gets added nothing much...

Well, if you heard it from one review then it must be true of course. I guess Bioware must be lying when they say that nearly 100 choices carry over. Those liars.

To the OP, just get it on Steam. It's super cheap and you can see if it interestes you before spending the big bucks on ME2.

I can't say for certain but I have not heard any news of a DRM free version of ME being released in boxes. It doesn't seem likely to me that it would be profitable to re-produce the disc without the SecuRom so soon after the original release - as you would probably have to make a new mastercopy, and then manufacture a fresh batch of units from that.

Yep. They scaled back the Securerom protection, but I don't think they ever actually removed it.

well that came out of nowhere...i did not say they did not carry over just did not have a big impact...but then again you already stated you disliked me so i suppose i should not be suprised.

Hmm...

Tell me a bit about Steam. I don't know a whole lot, but I do know that my mom and aunt download a ton of games from Big Fish (almost at a day-by-day basis. >_>); is it similar to that, only with bigger "mainstream" titles instead of smaller "casual" ones?

I sure did. I find you quite annoying, and I get the sense you're too young to be playing ME2.

What you said is the you "hear from one review that the whole custom gameplay did not have much of an impact as they were led to believe by bioware". Of course, I'm sure you didn't actually read the review. And even if you did, you are making assumptions based solely on that one review.

Steam is download service most PC gamers use. There are a ton of full games available there, from all the major publishers. It works great. I buy a lot of my games through there. They have crazy sales all the time, to. Mass Effect 1 was 5 bucks for a while during the holdays.

I'll consider it. In hindsight, it does sound very similar to the Big Fish stuff that my family uses all the time, and given their good experiences with it, the whole "direct download" concept doesn't seem too bad.

Another question about the transfering of character data... is it possible to change classes when doing so? I like the sound of Sentinels for ME2, but I've gotten the impression that they are actually the worst class in the original game.

Yes it is possible. You can change everything but your gender and your background.

If you're looking to completely avoid SecuROM, the Steam version is indeed the way to go. Just be warned that the DLC carries it anyway, so you'd have to forego Bring Down the Sky. (Got misled on that, so now I'm stuck anyway... ah well. I don't object to it being on my system, I just object to the day it refuses to install again and I have to try and get activations out of EA. Or worse, EA decides the activation server simply isn't worth their while...)

As regards classes, I'd actually say the Engineer is the weakest in ME1, simply because it has so little defense. The Sentinel is actually pretty decent - sure, there are a couple weak powers, but that lets you focus on developing the good ones; the only real problem with the Sentinel is the lack of a high-damage weapon, but you can balance your squad appropriately and take one of the combat-oriented squaddies.
