I have an interesting perspective on the matter:
(1) There was no 100% guarantee the vaccine would work. What next?
(2) What if Ellie is indeed the only one immune? Kill her and lost the chance to invent the cure forever? No way.
(3) Protecting Ellie so she can grow up and have her own kids looks like a long, but much more effective way to find a real cure.
Joel is a smart person. I'm sure he kept all of this in mind while making his decision. I believe the decision was only partially selfish.
I thought the same thing when I was watching the ending. But even if it guaranteed a cure, it wouldn't have been worth it. Humanity is not worth saving if it requires those kinds of sacrifices. It would have been cliche if they made the ending any other way, especially if you look at the trend in other recent video games.
Bioware should hire the story writer for The Last of Us. It's the first long story campaign in while that I didn't feel like I wasted my time by playing it.
Wondering if anybody else hit the three surgeons in the operating room with a shotgun blast to the face...
