SPOILERS:
I think Joel was kind of shown as the villain to a certain extent. He killed Marlene in cold blood while she was begging for her life, and he robs humanity of salvation, all because he has his own survivor guilt about his daughter. I think that's why they had Ellie tell the story, because it showed her guilt as a reflection of his own.

Not a villain per se, but morally grey certainly. I did like how you find that one recording from Marlene that showed what a hard thing it was for her to go through with ordering the surgery, so as to make her less of a clear villain herself. I also liked how you could either kill or spare the doctors in the operating room; I definitely questioned myself after gunning them down, unarmed and pleading for their life as they were.

It's certainly an interesting conundrum, whether you'd be willing to sacrifice someone you care about for the good of humanity, and I can't say I know what I'd do in a similar situation.

Wait, you can spare the doctors?! I thought you could only kill them.

Actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure. I just sort of assumed you could; I could definitely be wrong on that one.

I actually had to walk up and down the room a few times after killing the doctors before I finally saw the little triangle to pick up Ellie, so it's certainly possible that it doesn't even show up unless you kill them. I wouldn't have noticed if that was the case.

***SPOILERS***

Is it just me, or is the music at the end (the gentle guitar rift when joel is driving with ellie in the backseat) make the ending hurt even more? It's beautifully executed.

SPOILER discussion:

When I think more about it, I doubt that creating a vaccine would have "saved humanity". Assuming the Fireflies had the facilities to create it, what about mass production, distribution and dispensing? Not gonna happen. The other factions will shoot on sight before you get close enough to tell them you have a vaccine, and wouldn't trust that you weren't given them poison if they didn't shoot.

The vaccine would only immunize a small community which would still have to survive the other factions and infected. It'd make them more resiliant as they wouldn't have to worry about losing people to the infection itself, but that's about it.

Just finished it. Was really good. Amazing Voice acting and the score was the best soundtrack I've heard in a game since Red Dead Redemption. Troy Baker is an absolute great voice actor and he's sure to win a few awards this year either as Booker Dewitt or Joel. The game was tremendous in terms of graphical fidelity. The gameplay was pretty good, especially the stealth aspect and how you use the environment, I felt the shooting was sub par but the adventure aspect and stealth made up for it.

The story-line was pretty par for the course, nothing really shocked me. Especially about the fireflies grand scheme with poor ellie. The game is no way a "masterpiece" or "genre defining" or "perfect". It's not even naughty Dogs best game of this gen- That's Uncharted 2. But the game is probably the best exclusive this year and easily the best PS3 game it quite awhile. As far as the glitches and bugs my PS3 froze twice and one time the camera fell through the entire game world, so it's suffice to say that this game launched with some pretty bad bugs. But that seems to be kinda where games are at during launch time now.

All in all, I'd give it an 8.5/9ish score. One of the best games this year but my GOTY is still Bioshock Infinite with Metro Last Light ( I've got a feeling that this will change come the time GTA5 releases, lol) a very close second. If you're talking about 3rd person action/adventure/shooter games, The Last of Us is second behind Tomb Raider.

Good game, even great at times, but a little over-hyped. But still worth the price of admission and a 2nd playthrough.

um yeah I know it does. I think it's just not very good. The Weapon sway and hit detection are horendous and so is the sensitivity. I changed it a bunch trying to get something smooth but even after doing that and upgrading weapon sway, I still didn't like the shooting of the game. But the stealth and melee combat was unique and fun.

SPOILERS!

I have to ask...there were a number of times in the games latter half that I was forced into a gunfight. The stand out times to me:
1) Joel & Ellie, when they run into Pittsburgh's halftrack, right before Henry and Sam.
2) Joel & Sam when they get seperated in the sewers. This was most frustrating, because I felt like I should have been able to kill all the runners one by one, but everytime I got close they would turn around and kill me. Still not sure if this was a glitch.
3) The sniper in the suburbs. I couldn't get to him without starting a gunfight, and once you do kill him, you have to use the sniper rifle.
4) Fighting your way out of the University, enemies kept spawning in such a way that you couldn't sneak up on them, or lose them.
5) Ellie & David's "Last stand". I actually kind of enjoyed this one.
6) Ellie in the lodge. There's a guy in the window that see's you immediately when you come into view. Even assuming you kill him before he sees you, another enemy spawns at the other window. And then, right after you kill these guys, you get captured anyways!
7) With the Fireflies, the first section you can stealth your way, but the 2nd starts with an enemy bursting through the door ahead while you're in the open, and the 3rd starts with an enemy peering down an open corridor that you HAVE to walk through. You can lose them in here, a little bit, but it's still mostly a corridor shooter.

sure there are some sequences you have to use guns because the enemies are scripted to detect you.Other than that, using guns isn't recommended because there's not enough ammo

So many spoilers. Guys, it hasn't even been out a week yet. Guess that means I need to hurry the bleep up and finish.

And, just wanted to show some Tess love.

The whole post is one big spoiler!

SPOILER discussion:

I'm not sure it matters whether Ellie believes him or not. If "not" she must realize that Joel brought her back to protect her - it's not as if he would sabotage a cure (after all that effort to get there) on a whim. And if he's lying, it's only to spare her the pain of the truth, so "Okay (I can live with that)" instead of "Okay (I absolutely believe you)", which leads to her living her life the same either way with maybe a lingering curiosity about the details.

Spoiler!

I'm pretty sure that one of the already announced DLC will be after the original end. I really don't see the Fireflies simply giving up after Joel leaves with Ellie.
He murdered quite a few of them and "stole" what they think is humanity's last hope. Those Fireflies don't seem to be the kind of people who simply call it a day and go home when things aren't going their way.

I finished the game I think twenty minutes ago. It was quite good and one of the best games to have come out this year, though I'm not sure if its better than BioShock Infinite.

bioshock infinite is overrated.Who would've thought that a game with such a boring combat would get so high scores

I actually really enjoyed the combat in Bioshock Infinite; it was the story I was let down by.

Now, the original Bioshock vs. The Last of Us: that'd be a tough one.

They have no idea where to start looking. It's a big country, and Marlene lost most of her unit getting to the base. As much as they would want to go after Ellie, they're not going to risk going out with no idea where to go. Bandits and infected would just whittle them down.

I'd actually expect that with the level of desperation shown in the recordings and journals, a lot of Fireflies would end up eating their guns. They just lost their 'only' hope.

I was thinking: perhaps there could be another game set in The Last of Us. It doesn't even have to follow Ellie and Joel again. It could be centered around a totally new protagonist(s). I don't see why not. It seems like a waste to just do one game set in the world of The Last of Us and just end the series at that. We don't even knew where the virus came from. In the next game, the orgins of the disease could be elaborated on.

Yes, rather strange that a fungus evolved to attack insects would suddenly jump right to humans, and cause such destructive behaviors. It's almost as if it were engineered...

I would not be at all surprised if it were cooked up in a lab and got loose.

There already will be 2 more games, at least from what I've read, where Sony has created a license for a Last of Us 2 & 3. It could just have been a rumor though, come to think of it. The way I see it is that I'd feel fine with them ending it with 1 game. Some games don't always require sequels.

So... is this a good game from a gameplay perspective?
