Why is the soldier the most popular ME class, by FAR ???

a gun
of course all ME classes wield guns but the soldier uses guns as the main focus of their interactions.
Why are adepts less popular? The class that can fling enemies into the air and toss them around like rag dolls, or EXPLODE THEM with your fricken MIND !!!
Or the engineer that can strip the shields off targets with the snap of his fingers, or EXPLODE mechs doing the same?
It seems to me other classes are FAR more fantastical and INTERESTING, but most people who play ME apparently ignore those and go with that oh so inspiring grunt with a gun.
It actually makes me lose a little faith in humanity to learn that most people are that boring or uninteresting, that they have tastes that beef jerky level, they could choose to dine on steak and salmon, and they choose pork rhines (the standard soldier class)
Maybe I am being some effite snob, so someone explain why the soldier is SOOOO much more compelling than all the rest? I know for myself when I play games I usually choose the mage, you know, the guy that flings COSMIC POWER at his enemies... not swing a metal stick.
I feel like the last Roman staring into a sea of barbarians.

On the other hand, I don't think the classes are half so well defined and differentiated in 1 as they are in 2, and by the time you get there, soldier is far from boring. You can be a very powerful frontline bull-in-a-china-shop, but you're also the most effective sniper in the game. I think sniper soldier was possibly my favourite ME2 playthrough (for combat, at least).

I liked the soldier because it was a solid sturdy class, could take damage and dish it out. also not a whole lot of thinking involved, and when i was playing the game for the story i didnt want to be hung up on my class for long.
although i did do biotic and infiltrator, fun but glass jaws

For some, it might be just because its the default option. But not many, I hope.
Also, ME1 Soldier had Immunity which was almost brokenly strong. Best defense power by far, which made the class easier to play and stay alive with.
In ME2 the Soldier does amazing damage with his guns and is arguably the most powerful class in the game with Adrenaline Rush.
Conversely, Adept has more depth but involved more bringing up the power wheel because we console players could only hotkey one power. That broke the immersion for a lot of players. And in 2, Adept suffered the most from the protection system which made it probably the weakest class, though still strong and plenty of fun.
My opinions, anyway.

Personally though my first play through was as an Infiltrator. Then when I get in the mood to revisit the games from 1-3 I have played as a Soldier, Sentinel, Adept and Engineer. I think the best are the Sentinel and Engineers. Sentinels are powerhouses and are just devestating when up against it. However I personally loved the Engineer. I didn't mind sitting back and stripping shields and armor but when you bring him/her into ME3 just turns devestator with tech explosions haha

I like the sneaking sniper who is able to possess most abilities. I think of him as the most flexible.
I guess it also depends on what kind of games you play or have played.
As someone stated above a soldier is the default and easy to access character in most games. Easy to identify with?

Really, I was thinking about creating a post asking for advise on how to play as a soldiers since it seems like the hardest class to play as (without constant mission failure screens).

Step 1: Activate Adrenaline Rush.
Step 2: Shoot until Adrenaline Rush wears off.
Step 3: Wait until Adrenaline Rush cools down.
Step 4: Go back to step 1.
If you are worried about ammo issues:
- Use the Viper when you get it.
- Use the Predator.
- Use the Scimitar when you get it.
- Use Vindicator until you get to the Collector Ship. Then take the Revenant if you are truly concerned about ammo.
Use Pistols/Sniper rifles/assault rifles versus armor.
Use Shotguns and assault rilfes versus shields/barriers.
Or:
- Use a sniper rifle to open an engagement with a few shots.
- Switch to your assault rifle/pistol and shoot/kill some guys.
- Switch to your shotgun and then finish enemies off at close range.
Also, check the Builds and Strategy forums for discussions and topics. There is a Strategy thread stickied near the top of the forum that you may find useful.
I am short on time so I cannot be as much help to you as I would like to be at the moment.

Thanks for the tips.
I was already doing the Adrenaline Rush/Shoot thing, but I found that it did not really help when using an assault rifle. It does not speed up firing, or slow down damage taken. It just helps with aiming. But I don't miss much with the Vindicator even without the time dialation. So that part was pointless. It did help when using the Mantis, especially for lining up head shots, but the Infiltrator has that time dialation built in, plus you get a massive damage bonus when breaking from cloak. And the infiltrator gets incinerate as well. The only thing I can see that's good about Adrenaline Rush is being able to charge from one cover to the next quicker. But, again, the infiltrator can cloak and displace with even fewer problems.
I have now taken this soldier through the Archangel, Mordin, and Jack recruitment missions, plus the Kassumi and Zaeed loyalty missions and I am going to retire him. The soldier is a weak class, IMO. If you are interested in a weapon based class, the infiltrator seems a better choice as long as you get the Locust SMG.
Another problem I find with a weapon based class is squad control. As a power based class I find I am constantly getting my squad to use their powers, but as a soldier (and an infiltrator) I become too focused on shooting the enemy in front of me and lose sight of what my squad is up to. A power based class will be going to the power wheel more often, and while you are there you can examine the battlefield and queue up power uses by your team mates, like the pull/warp combo.

Adrenaline Rush gives you a +100% weapon damage bonus while activated. Heightened Adrenaline Rush will give you +140% weapon damage bonus while activated.
Adrenaline Rush will slow down damage taken in that you move at the same speed while everything else around you slows down.
Soldier is generally considered the most powerful class in the game, particularly when combined with the Mattock (a DLC gun). The Mattock has an insane fire rate that can only be reached under Adrenaline Rush. So combine the insane damage bonus from Adrenaline Rush plus an insane rate of fire, and you can rain death upon everyone around you.

Really? Why doesn't it say that in the description? Or did I miss that? All I saw was recharge time, duration, and time dialation.

I would vote the Vanguard as the strongest class in ME1. You get both adept powers and soldier abilities. I always add assault rifle and they already get shotgun. Their health and shields are lower but with Adrenaline Rush, shield restore, barrier, throw, lift, and warp bad guys don't stay standing for long. My only issue with the class is not being able to zoom in with a sniper rifle which I don't get.
Do you get in close? I have never been interested in the Vanguard because I don't want to use either a pistol or a shotgun as my primary weapon. And I certainly don't want to get in close if I can help it. I prefer to fight at range.
Currently I am playing a Sentinel and I have fallen in love with Tech Armor. It just saved my butt big time. I was fighting Captain Enyala & company and accidentally let her get in close. Suddenly I am face to face with a claymore wielding super-boss. But Tech Armor came through. First I hit her with two warps and a reave (Samara, Miranda, and myself). That brought down her barrier and some of her armor. But she was still blasting away and stripped away my shield. But the tech armor bought me time: it exploded, staggering her, which gave me time to put it back up (gotta love insta-shield), which in turn reset the cool down periods on Miranda and Samara allowing me to hit her in rapid succession with reave and warp. Tech armor saved Sheppard's life that time.
Sentinel is also nice because you have the option to have a huge power damage and power cool down boost and you get powers to deal with any type of enemy. With warp and overload you can handle barriers, shields, armor and health. This leaves you free to pick an ammo power as your bonus power. For survivability, Sentinel seems very aptly named.

Mattock is OP tbh. It made my Isanity run on my Soldier a bit easier compared to my Infiltrator.
