I'm about to upgrade my graphics card again and after a long time consider a nVidia. From the past I remember many nVidia drivers and/or cards had issues with NWN2 (missing ground textures etc), so I wanted to ask if anyone's running NWN2 with nVidia's current lineup (GTX 6xx/7xxx) and if there are any issues or driver recommendations.

BTW, I'm looking at nVidia because of other compatibility issues, I know nowadays AMD has the better midrange cards, so don't recommend me a 7870 or such, I know I should get one if I could. :D

I'm afraid I can't recommend anything new, myself. My nVidia card is an older one -- GeForce 8800 GTS.  No issues on it in NWN2.

Heh, and that was exactly my last nVidia card too. 4 years ago or so there was a very long period when no nVidia driver release would ever work with NWN2. Finally it was fixed, but from hearsay in my PW community I heard newer cards were having the same issues again (4xxx/5xx series? Don't remember).

I'm probably going for a 660Ti and actually I'm looking forward to seeing point light/interior shadows again in NWN2 after all these years, however I'm scared of the driver issues and that I won't be able to play BGR. :(

I have a GeForce GT 540M in my laptop. I get the terrain texture normal bug occuring, but at least I know how to make my own modules Nvidia-friendly (have at least five textures in each outdoor terrain tile). When it occurs in existing modules I can simply leave and re-enter the problem area, or if I don't have that option, turn off surface normals temporarily.

NWN2 is the only game I have that has graphics problems though (and they're fairly minor). I can turn the graphics options in The Witcher all the way up to eleven, for instance. When I first played The Witcher on an older machine, I had to turn the graphics options down considerably. However NWN2 performed beautifully with the older graphics card and drivers.

Oh, thanks for the info... pity the picture in that thread was taken down, I wonder how it looks like. Turning off normal maps would be horrible, I'm so eyecandy fixated. If I ever pick up building again though, I'm always using the maximum of textures per tile anyway. If that fixes it - no problem. :)

The bug causes overlapping textures in outdoor areas to fight for dominance, resulting in random pixels rapidly flickering back and forth as each texture tries to display on top of the others (rather than them all blend together as they're supposed to).

For some reason it only occurs the first time you enter a problem area though. Transition to another area and come back, and the bug has magically disappeared.

I don't know why five textures per terrain tile is the magic number. Most of the areas in the official campaigns use plenty of textures though, so it's mainly something I encounter in downloaded modules.

I feel the same way about point light shadows!  When they're done properly (i.e. with the lights set to cast less than 1.0 [100%] shadows) they contibute greatly to the visual quality of the areas.  I'm horrified that ATI cards don't support them!

Yeah, ever since my 8800 died I had to ask myself the same question, getting the better bang for the buck from ATI or buy nVidia only for NWN2... since my building stalled for a long time and I did other stuff, I chose ATI, but always regretted it once I went back to NWN2.

They sure do

Proof? I ran through 3 different AMD cards and the gorgeous point light shadows weren't there. Also, interior shadows? Do you get those too? Give me your driver now and I'll cancel my GeForce order :D

My card is old too so this post is likely useless, but since I'm here already... I have a 9600GT and I have no issues with NWN2. Had some in the past with some old drivers, but that was years ago.

P.S. - I liked your interview. All merit goes to Dalaigh, of course.

I would like to hear something definitive about the ATI shadows as well.  My statement quoted above is a reaction to hearing that shadows don't work on ATI cards, not a statement from personal experience.  I would be happy to know that they do.

I have an NVidia 560 GTX. I do sometimes get the terrain texture glitch DannJ mentioned.

If I wasn't so lazy I'd make some comparison screens, since I have both an AMD and a nVidia lying here right now. The nVidia is already taken back out and goes right back to the shop though because it sucks (the cooler is horrible).

Anyway, as for the point light shadows, a few years back on the old boards I already posted some pics, the point light shadows in exterior areas are somewhat there, but almost not visible, you can only see them when you're moving a bit right next to a light source and look very hard - on a Nvidia card they're clearly visible.

Interiors though, nada, you don't get any shadows from placed light sources at all on AMD, which is a really downer compared to nVidia cards where you can create and enjoy quite some atmosphere.

Okay, got a replacement card today and just loaded Crimmor for a quick check - looks like the 660Ti performs beautifully with all settings max/4x AA, I see no glitches at all and... wow, boy! After years I get interior shadows again! Hooray!
