Okay, this is the second time now I've been ambushed by guards just trying to get to different parts of Denerim. The first time was around 15 guards, and it took me several funstrating tries to get past it. This time, there are at least 20 guards, and all heavily armed and armored. Uh... what the hell? And why are they attacking me and accusing me of being a thief in the first place? Is this some kind of punishment for looting chests in the city? I am at a loss, and this is really turning me off to the game.

You tried to steal something (not from a chest, but from a person) and it failed. ;)

Good luck! :)

Yeap, these are the symptoms of failed pick pocketing. I learned my lesson quick and stopped stealing from people... because these encounters are tough to handle. All that you can steal from NPCs are not worth the thinking and the strategies you have to elaborate when you fail.

Nope. Its ALSO for lockpicking chests.
My first playthrough i had Zevran and he NEVER pickpocketed someone, just looted the chests and
the stupid guards were still coming.

Best option: Pause, and then RUN to the corner alley behind you. Mages in the Corner and the rest in front. Most Archers wont follow and the Melees you will have to fight in 1 or 2 waves.

Incredibly lame. I tried pickpocket with Liliana 1x and failed, just for the hell of it. There seemed to be no immediate consequences so I just moved on. Now hours later into the game this is the result? I don't want to be at war with the guards of Denerim, and going back now is not an option. I can't express how disappointed I am with how this plays out. Great... now I have to be a murdering thug to move through the city. Thanks for that BioWare >:( For F's sake, there should at least be an option to pay a fine or something.... this is just BS.

You will only have 2 encounters with the guards! After them nothing of al this happens again.

lol. paying a fine for attempting to steal from someone. That's the funniest thing I have seen all day.

I am now going to try and pickpocket people in Denerim just so I can have a few more fights...

I agree, In Oblivion ( Oh dear....I went and mentioned it !! ) You get an option to either resist arrest and fight, pay a fine or do a stretch in jail ( resulting in you loosing 1 random ability point ). IMO this works quite well.

yes it works in Cyrodiil... but Ferelden is a far more barbaric society than the Empire of Tamriel.

I had, i think at least 3 encounters with guards... though i believe one was actually in the Back Alley, or something like that, rather than a random ambush. i assumed they were tied into the fact that my PC was completing Slim Coudry's quests...

I don't usually pickpocket much, but I open every chest I find and I've never seen any of these encounters.

There is a couple of chests in the market (part of a quest, previously mentioned) that you can't unlock, I would imagine it is attempting to break into these that may have caused it for the ones whom never pickpocketed anyone. I leave those chests alone in most playthroughs and don't pickpocket much, but do open the chests you can open and I don't have any of the 'guard' situations like I did with my first playthrough when I did try opening them chests or pickpocketing, the latter which I did on 2nd playthrough

Slim Couldry questline ;) you need to have a slot in pickpocketing if I remember rightly for him to 'appear' in the market to start the questline

I usually purposely fail at pickpocketing someone just to get the encounters.  I'm doing my first PC run, though, and the fights are a lot harder with my video card struggling to keep up, so I'm going to be an angel in the market this time through.  Or until I get a new video card.  :P  I like the XP and the free money/loot.  No one else seems to notice and Kylon doesn't seem to care.

Stop! You violated the law. Pay the court a fine or serve your sentance. Your stolen goods are now forfeit.

This phrase has been burned into my memory, I couldn't resist.

Wow late :(

Even if you don't agree with that, there are other options that could be included... bribery (of the guards or the victim), persuasion, intimidation, etc. etc. Use your imagination. Having brute force as the only path in this situation is contrary to the whole spirit of the game IMO. I think some corners were cut in this respect.

Also, you must have very little knowledge of the real world if you think fines for criminal activity are something out of the ordinary, so enjoy a little chuckle at your own expense.

These random encounters with guards are the reason Morrigan always has a place in my parties now. She is essential to handling mass groups of enemies. My other tactic is to focus all my party on one target, I hate the way a lot of the time the AI seems broken and they all attack different targets, unless you take a lot of time setting up tactics properly.

Well I did manage to get past it, only because all the archers were apparently to stupid to move out of a well placed tempest spell.

Indeed.  And not just  exp.

Try failing a  pickpocket in the Dalish camp.  You'll eventually get ambushed by a group of archers led by a named  Elven Woman boss.  In my game she dropped a Grandmaster rune.
