Have not tried alot of biotic stuff really for companions...do they automatically do their biotics and tech attacks or do i have to designate everything but regular weapon firing?

You can set various power usage tactics for the AI. For example so that they use defensive powers automatically, but you activate offensive powers manually.

Ok, wish they would have made that a little better AI wise but I guess the game would be too easy if you only had to worry about yourself.

In general, at higher difficulty levels you might want to keep more control on power usage for yourself.

Power cooldowns are pretty long in ME1 (this changes in the sequels), With AI off, you can be sure you have access to the powers when you need them.

Yes. They keep themselves alive and shoot the enemy, but you decide when and how to use the offensive powers.

So what is the benefit of transfering your character from mass effect to mass effect to and so on?

Some relatively minor things: like meeting a character that you interacted with in ME1, and maybe doing something for them - an interaction that would not occur without the import.  There are a few of those in ME2.

The game will reference and reflect decisions you made in previous games. And as Swordfish said, there will be cameos (some with quests) according to those choices too.
