Hey :)

I've got some time off of work soon and I'm planning to do an entire Mass Effect trilogy playthrough. However, this time with DLC! Can anybody who has played all of the DLC tell me when the best time to play From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega and Citadel are? In regards to Citadel, I want to see as much of the content as possible, and I'm not fussed about splitting the DLC into multiple parts.

Any advice would be appreciated ^_^

From Ashes: After Menae.
Leviathan: After Horizon.
Omega: After Horizon.
Citadel: After you beat the game, reload your endgame save and start up Citadel. It has a hook to function in the timeline, but I think it works best when you play it detached from the main narrative.

For me

From Ashes after the Citadel coup to get the extra dialogue if you have Kaidan/Ashley with you.
Omega any time after the Citadel coup
Leviathan after Thessia
Citadel after Horizon

The order I play is from ashes either before or after Menae
Leviathan, any time after the Citadel Coup
Omega, right after talking to Aria on the Citadel after getting the Merc quests done
Citadel right before the final assault

Edit: at least that is the order I have done them so far.  If I were to change anything, I would play the mission for Citadel right after the citadel coup and the rest of the content spread out through the second half of the game

From Ashes: I would say after Sur'kesh. You will want to get him as soon as possible to hear all his dialogue, but it makes the most sense to do it after Sur'kesh from a gameplay and story standpoint. You'll fight an Atlas or two and several Engineers on Eden Prime, presented as just another enemy, but Sur'kesh gives them both proper introductions. And the Crucible is mentioned by name in a conversation with Javik that takes place right after, and you only learn the name after Sur'kesh.

Leviathan: Anytime after Thessia, would recommend after Horizon.

Omega: I would say after Priority: The Citadel II. Omega's tricky because it's long and feels very self contained, so I wouldn't recommend doing it in the middle of Story Arc. Right after Citadel II makes sense because the Genophage Arc is over, the Quarian and Geth Arc hasn't started, and it makes sense to wanna stick it to Cerberus.

Citadel: I would honestly recommend doing it after you beat the game for your first time through. Where as the actual end of the game is the "end" of the story, Citadel feels like the "goodbye" to the series. It's a shift in tone that can clash with the main game, though it is possible to play it in the middle of a playthrough. It's split up into three parts, the mission, the exploration of the strip and all the character conversations with your squad, and the party. So if you really want to do it in the middle, I would say do the first part after Rannoch, but before Thessia, so you are not in the middle of an Arc, but still have Tali, if she's alive. Make sure you lock in your romance before though. Then do all the character talks as you see fit, and then make the party be the very last thing you do before the final mission. Again though, I would still say Citadel is best after you beat the game.

Nah, I disagree with you about From Ashes. You should really get Javik before Sur'kesh and bring him with you on Sur'kesh mission. He really has funny lines to say there.

On contary to all of you, I've done Leviathan fairly early ... like right before Tuchanka. I don't think it makes any differences.

But for Omega and Citadel, I agree with these guys. They are best to do after Priority: The Citadel II. But since things get really tense at the time of Priority: Thessia, I think it's actually better to finish them before Priority: Thessia. Leviathan will still feel appropriate to play after Priority: Thessia though.

From Ashes: I'm also on the "after Surkesh" team. Because of the enemy drop.

I start Leviathan somewhere after the coup and finish it before I do the Citadel DLC after horizon. I like to space it out over the course of the game.

Omega...I do that before I do the Citadel DLC but not before the final Leviathan mission.

Leviathon is a throw-away that doesn't matter one way or another. It can be played at any time because it actually doesn't change anything. It merely adds a little extra game time. The actual mission comes to absolutely ZERO. You don't actually gain any allies or help - they simply cover their own butts and then go back to sleep. Citadel should be done as late in the game as possible...like just before going to Cerberus HQ, so you get everyone you can involved (in the party, at least) and are certain to have resolved your LI situation so it plays out right in the DLC.

Since you have played the game, certain reveals won't be spoiled. But keeping that in mind:
From ashes after surkesh, as said above, for the drop. It's really a dlc that encourages multiple plays, to take him with you early for dialogue, to take VS with you to get him, etc.

Leviathan can be started at any time, but nothing beyond the citadel until after monastery.

Omega after coup, or after rannoch before citadel.

Citadel mission after rannoch. Return to apt often. Party before cronos, or thessia depending on Miranda's status in your game.

Actually you do get allies, 400 points worth of ally to be specific. Posted Image

Though the information you get from it is invaluable. It contextualizes the ending in such a way to make for a much more palatable experience. It's a great bit of content in it's own right, adds a lot to the lore and backstory of the universe, and it even adds some additional dialogue to the final conversation with He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, so it does actually effect the ending in some way, so I would never go as far as to say it doesn't matter. What's your beef with-

Ah, I see. Clearly no biased opinions here...Posted Image

Personally, I do From Ashes right after I get control of the Normandy, before Menae. I like Javik's in-ship banter.

I do Leviathan after I lock-in on a love interest, because I like the tiny changes bringing them on the mission does.

I do Omega after Citadel II, because it flows best then.

I definitely do Citadel after Horizon, just so I can have everyone available for it.

Been awhile so I may be wrong, but I think post rannoch is the soonest everyone is available for the mission part of citadel. Of course the encounters become available as the game progresses. I like revisiting the strip during the latter half of the game, spread the encounters out.

Honestly, all of the DLCs can be played at any given point in the narrative. I would do Omega before the coup though.

The Ctadel DLC is a bit tricky. Feel free to play through te mission segment whenever you feel like it, but do the party AFTER completin the main game and picking Destroy. It renders all characters available, and acts as a sort of new-ish ending. Whatever it is, it's better than any of the 3 options available at the start.
