It won, what is there to discuss?
I don't think that matters, with the amount of people hating the xbox and wanting ps4, they will make the money back, plus the online now costs.

I think they probably are biting a bit of cost with that price, ps4's guts aren't super high end but its far from shabby either. They did with the ps3, its a logical tactic since once they get them in homes the real profit comes from the software and subscriptions anyways, so it certainly wouldn't surprise me if thats the case now as well.
All in all I'm pretty impressed. PS3 was quite a blunder in its complicated design and high price, now they have what looks like a very well designed machine at a moderate price. They learned their lesson.

A cut they can probably afford by making Plus required for online play, though. I have PS Plus anyway because it rocks but still they sort of slipped that tidbit under the radar.

Why, Sony? Free online play was one of the reasons I chose PS3 over 360 -- and now you're putting it behind a paywall?!
PS4 is still cheaper than the XBO, and I'll have to pay for online play anyway since XBL isn't free either, and both are apparently around 60 € / yr (and it looks like XBL has 2 games for free per month versus the 1 PSN+ subscribers get, so apparently it's a inferior service as well for the exact same price, urgh). OTOH, PS4 has no restrictions on used / gifted / loaned games so there's that (and I have to say, that was one epic burn right there, I felt a bit sorry for Microsoft there for a second), but still... damnit!
Also why is PS4 399 € when $ 399 is just over 300 € ? XBO did the exact same thing: $ 499 = 380 €, not 499 €! That's over 100 € more than in the US -- why's that?
(althought the Aussies seem to be screwed price-wise even worse so I probably shoudn't complain too much... my condolences)
Well, I guess I'll be hanging on to my old PS3 for a while yet, since most new titles I'm looking forward to are coming to the PS3 as well, so I guess I'll be hanging here, waiting for the prices to drop... and enjoying the free online play as long as I can.
*sigh*

They could probably afford the price cut even without pay to play online

I don't think they're taking a larger price cut -- or at least not a significantly larger one -- than Microsoft since (if I remember correctly) the material costs of a PS4 are cheaper than those of a XBO, so the PS4 was predicted to be cheaper even before the prices were announced.
Also, isn't Sony one of the blu-ray patent owners? If they are, do they get revenue from physical XBO copies as well since the XBO is also using the blu-ray format, or how does that work? IDK, but if they do that might be a factor as well, maybe?

I don't have an XBox so I can't compare, but I love PS Plus. The free games are usually good ones, many many games get a nice discount for PS Plus, and they have weekly sales on top of that. Example: Assassin's Creed Liberation is $26, on sale for $19 this week, with a PS Plus Discount bringing it down to $13. Good stuff.

ALL HAIL THE PS4!!!
Seriously though, with KH3 announced and all the things the Sony people have done at E3 alone, the PS4 is definitely on my to-get list.

Sony just beat Microsoft into bloody submission. I'd post the relevant gif that demonstrates it appropriately, but Opera despises copying images.

Yes I've heard that the PSN+ is amazing on PS3, but I always liked having the freedom to play multiplayer / co-op for free. I'm just afraid I'll end up like my friend, who owns a 360 but hasn't got a XBL subscription, so when ME3 came out he couldn't play the multiplayer even thought he had the online pass, because buying a 60 € subscription to play one multiplayer game (which cost another 60€) is just unacceptable, and he ended up missing on a really awesome feature (which he had technically paid for when he bought the game), and I'm afraid it'll happen to me at some point...
holy run-on sentence batman
And I feel kinda iffy about paying extra to use a feature I've technically already payed for (see above) -- assuming PS4 games don't come in two editions, one with and one without multiplayer support, which is not going to happen. I know that's not how it works, legally speaking, but it kinda leaves a bitter taste in my mouth...
But you're right: paying 60 € for 12 free games per year is great value for money, particularly if they keep the PSN+ subscriber discounts and weekly sales. And if I am going to buy a console I have to pay either way since XBL isn't going to be free either, so it's a moot point, really.

Wondering how it might affect future games like Dragon's Dogma, which is a single-player game with online functionality (pawns). Ditto for Demon's Souls insofar as messages are concerned. Will those cool features be accessible with base PSN?
Impossible to know for sure, but I have to say I kinda doubt it, bet I guess we'll have to wait and see.
But that's definitely not happening with stuff like Destiny, Watch Dogs and NFSR, which is a bit of a shame because having the option of moving seamlessly from SP to MP was one of the few new gameplay mechanics shown which immediately got my attention. And now we find out that interesting new mechanic is behind a paywall.
Argh, this just annoys me just so, so much!
