The text only mentions she was the other major contender for the throne aside from Arland when the old king died without a successor. Is there any other information on this?
Is Sophia Dryden a Theirin?

There is no in-universe evidence to suggest she was a Theirin. In her own journal she describes herself as "the greatest of the Drydens" suggesting that she, at least, considered herself a Dryden above and beyond anything else.
She was a strong contender for the throne because she was extremely popular among the other noble families while Arland was "a snot-nosed man-child". Remember that Ferelden has no requirement of its ruler other than being of some sort of noble lineage.
If you talk to Dairren during the Human Noble origin, he'll mention that Bryce Cousland was favored in a manner similar to Sophia. Unlike Sophia Bryce never made an attempt to gain the throne, but apparently a lot of people still think he should've been king instead of Cailan. And then there's the way the Landsmeet practically revolts at the notion of Alistair as king. Anora is barely even royal, her father was an uplifted commoner, and the nobles still prefer her over Maric's blood because she's proven herself to be a capable ruler. It's possible to put Alistair on the throne, sure, but it requires a lot of maneuvering and some serious charisma on the Warden's part. The king/queen being a descendant of Calenhad is tradition, but the nobility will happily toss that tradition out the window if there is a better candidate from another family.

The throne of Ferelden has remained with the descendants of Calenhad since Calenhad and Aldenon established the nation from warring teyrnirs. I think the Drydens would be contenders for the throne if they didn't have a "black name", which was part of the reason for the events of Warden's Keep (to clear their name and absolve Sophia of the vilification associated with her because of Arland).

She might be. Arland was Sophia's cousin.

Wait, isn't the reason the Drydens have a "black name" is because Sophia started the rebebllion after joining the Grey Wardens? I always thought maybe Sophia's mother was the one with Theirin blood or she was forced to take up her mother's maiden name after she failed to win the crown the first time.

It doesn't seem last names are patrilineal. Sophia's brother, Toben Dryden fled to Antiva with Sophia's son, and they changed their names to Derocher. Over hundred years later, Silvie Derocher found documents about her family's history, and she reclaimed the Dryden name.

With all the intermarrying that typically goes on at that rank, I'd be surprised if she didn't have a Theirin *somewhere* in her family tree. All the king or queen's siblings have to marry *somebody.*
