No. Companions will always use their default gear (although it can be upgraded).

Amulets, rings and belts can be worn by companions as well. DLC packs contains accessories specifically for companions.

If you are of that class you can wear it, so it's not a waste.

Companions can still use the weapons and accessories.

And the armor is pretty good for Hawke.

You can go to dragonagenexus, and look for the mod that allows you to equip armor on your companions just like in DA:O. Note though, with that mod, you'll be spending more money, as your companions will have no armor by default, and you have to either buy or find them armor yourself.

To balance that out, look for the mod that makes junk more valuable.

Or get modded armor/clothes.
DragonAgeNexus has a whole bunch of armor. But from the way the OP is talking he sounds like a console player because any member of the PC master race knows theres a fix for anything :3
