What can Shepard do post-Destroy?

The topic of Shepard's post-war fate came up in another discussion and I said he was likely to end up with an impressive-sounding sinecure and kept from having real influence while the legend of Shepard is manipulated for various ends. That seems unduly grim. My Shep doesn't actually care that much about living happily ever after with his LI (well he does, but it wasn't exactly going through his mind in the chamber). An ending like Zaeed's feels both him and me with horror. He needs meaningful work, even if his frontline days are over. Shep's pretty charismatic, so I thought of some kind of diplomatic career, but I don't know how feasible that is, especially with an ex-Cerberus LI. Any suggestions from those who like Destroy more than I do?

And the Cerberus rebellion has been foiled.
The remaining Cerberus operatives will be hunted down and defeated.
The attempt on my life has left me scarred and deformed. But, I assure you, my resolve has never been stronger.
In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Council will be reorganized into the first Galactic Empire for a safe and secure society.

This would work better in Control if you ask me, it would require a bit more political posturing and sabotage before Shepard could take full power in destroy. I see him getting the now vacant counselorship easily enough, though maybe with enough revelations about a certain Thessia beacon, Tuchanka Bomb, Yhag program, and whatever else the Shadow Broker has laying around, maybe he could pull it off.
However, I prefer to think that Shepard gets a cushy diplomatic job, not quite ambassador, but some type of human figurehead position. He could meet and talk with all the high level officials of other species, but he really isn't all that involved with the political process, since I never thought of Shepard as a good politician (he's a little too punch-happy).
At this point though, I find it highly unlikely that they would let Shepard continue serving in a combat capacity. Sort of Like Captain America, he is now a symbol of hope in a galaxy desperately neeing some. They will not risk him getting killed by some random cruiser or rogue faction..... again.

-Continue working as a Spectre
-Continue his career in the Alliance military, possibly aspiring to become an admiral (Not all military work involves frontline service. My father was a pilot in the Air Force, but spent a fair amount of time in the office planning, writing reports, etc.)
-Diplomacy, politics, advising the council (Regardless of your LI being Miranda, the fact that he ended the Reaper threat should influence the council to at least listen for his input on some matters)
-Motivational speaking (He's a hero, he can inspire people and offer leadership talks)
-Start a business ( A new challenge for him that doesn't involve gunfire for a change )
-Consulting

2: Recover.
3: Report in to Hackett and/or what remains of the Council
4: Implore said authority figures to use unmanned probes to tow the Reaper corpses into the gravity well of the nearest star
5: Throw badge at them and quit when they refuse
6: Find an extranet terminal and send messages to all squadmates & love interests
7: Wander down to a beach
8: Order a drink (preferably not from a Batarian barkeep)
9: Lie on a deckchair, wait for friends to arrive
10: Wait for inevitable "Shepard, we screwed up" extranet message from Hackett/Council

Assuming Shepard is unwilling or unable to continue pursuing a military career, either as an Alliance officer or a Spectre, there's still several options:
Diplomacy: Regardless of the exact makeup of the fleet, Shepard managed to get an impressive number of species to work together. Shep could become a diplomat, a formal ambassador, maybe even the next human Councilor.
Cleanup: Both the CItadel and Earth are a mess. Shepard could help direct cleanup work, rescue details first responders, etc
Teaching: Shepard could become an instructor at a makeshift naval academy. Or a biotic Shepard could become an instructor in that (perhaps Jump Zero could be taken out of mothballs until the relays are going again)
Colonist: Once the relays are back up and running, Earth will want to reestablish contact with its colonies, and they may need help. Shepard could end up settling on one of them, helping them get up and running again. Perhaps as just another settler, perhaps in something more high-profile.
Cleaning up the galaxy is something that's likely to take a human lifetime or more to complete. There's any number of ways Shepard can continue to contribute

But it probably didn't. You bypass the councillers in ME3, then the Citadel gets taken and they probably all die.Shepard could be instrumental in building a new council, with representation for other species that contributed (depending on how your game went). And maybe more then one councillor per species. More a kind of senate.
I can't really see Miranda holding back his career. She turned on Cerberus and worked against them at great personal risk, contributing to their complete destruction. Even if she hadn't, Shepard vouching for her would be more then enough. He probably has the pull to make her a Spectre.
So maybe Shepard as a new human Councillor with Miranda functioning as his right hand. Unless you want them to be professional equals?
