Ideally, that might be interesting.

In practice, absolutely not. It would necessitate an absolutely immense amount of work that could be served much better elsewhere.

By far the biggest problem is animation.

Hardly,in all 3 games Aliens used the same animations/skeleton as Human characters and for the most part it worked quite well.

None of the NPC characters have any animations even approaching the complexity of Shepard's animations. There's a great deal of physics to consider. You can't have an 800 lb krogan move the same way as a 90 lb salarian. It doesn't look right at all. You have to account for size.

Actully they are using the same animations.in and out of cut scene, and while i do agree it looks awkward at times,it never stopped bioware(or any other RPG game that allows you to pick your race) from recycling the same animations for diffrent races.
You can actually some of the ME animations in other bioware games.

The might recycle idle animations and movement animations. But they don't recycle animations for jumping, punching, kicking, drinking, kissing, holding hands, grabbing objects, caressing someone, pointing, shaking hands, patting people on the back...

Right now, I can only see specie selection only being available in multiplayer options. It is going to be a while before the option of race comes back into the storyline.

Holding hands:www.youtube.com/watchat 5:05 Tali let go of one of Shepard's hands and grabs the other.
www.youtube.com/watchat 2:27 Liara is using the same animation.

Kissing:www.youtube.com/watchat 1:59 Thane's left hand moves up to Shepard's right shoulder.
www.youtube.com/watchat 1:15 Shepard's left hand moves up to Jack's right shoulder.

give me enough time and i can give you more and better examples.

They do that across games. Hawke in DA2 has the same drinking motion as Shepard did in ME2.

I'd love to be a Krogan and a Turian. I was always more of a Alien person. I would play as a Human Female, but I just hope Bioware would be more open-minded and open romances possible to more species besides Drell, Asari, Turian, Quarian, and Human.

Seems like a lot of backstories to create, and a voice actor for each one, male and female.

Actually not. If one was a Turian, one was a drell and one was a krogan, all they'd have to do was add effects or pitch the voice, as cheap as that might be. It was done similarly with Lucas Arts' Jedi Knight III - Jedi Academy where you could play as different species with your create-a-character that could be either male or female.

^Yeah...

Upon reading the post, I just can't help but compare this to Dragon Age: Origins. Everybody starts out differently, but somehow the plot converges at some point.

It would prove to be quite a challenge, and it would probably take more resources on the devs part.

There'd be no Quarians or Geth for one thing, so chances are it'd only be the council races.

Too many resources would have to be devoted to it. Stick with human.

No thanks. Silent protagonists are fine in a Skyrim, but a story based game needs a fully voiced protagonist. As great as DAO is, there is no way I can go back to controlling a mute puppet. I don't see the appeal in playing a non-human race either, there is nothing to relate to. If we don't get more Shepard (never say never, the Eagles toured again) then I want to see a rogue human captain type of protagonist, answerable to no one but able to choose a form of allegiance to one faction or the other.

NO.

I am a human. I want to relate to a human protagonist. At least in campaign mode.

I second that notion.

Theoretically, it could be possible to do this to a limited extent without much added expense. Asari could just use unaltered "human female" voice files. The Turian voice effect sounds like it could be simple enough to be handled by applying a real time audio filter to human voice files. But other species would likely require additional voice recordings, or at least additional voice files. Salarians and Krogans have fairly distinct accents and speaking styles in addition to audio filters. Quarians have several different accents, as well as a pretty thick filter. Drell voices seem to mostly rely on a heavy audio filter for their distinctiveness, but I don't know if it would be simple enough to apply in real time.

In addition, animation could definitely be a problem for certain species. Asari could obviously just use human animations without any problems whatsoever. Quarians, Salarians, and Drell would probably also be okay with 99% of human animations. But with Turians I could definitely see some clipping issues coming up with the pronounced collar that is on all of their armors (see the troubles Mr. Fob has had with Garrus and the hug animation in MEHEM). And there would be a lot of difficulties with Krogan, what with their oddly shaped heads, stubby tails, and large bodies. The other day, I was playing an MP game where another player was a Krogan Warlord, and I noticed that when he equipped a shotgun, about a third of it was clipped inside the model's head.

On the other hand, I honestly don't think having a bunch of "origins" would be much of a problem. Shepard's background came up, what, 20-30 times in the entire trilogy? A story could easily be made where the protagonist's species isn't relevant most of the time.

My biggest worry with being able to play multiple races is that it would consume too much time and too many resources to make the rest of the world appropriately responsive to what race you are playing. At the extreme end of this, think of the situations in Skyrim where some NPC says, "You know, I really hate all members of [race]." Meanwhile, you're playing as that very race, and the NPC acts like there's nothing amiss.

I think the story would suffer if they did that. It would be too much... again

Even if i know how much I would like to have this happening, it would either taking to long to develop or take a serious toll on the rest of the game...

I thought a good way to do it would be to write 4 or 5 characters and the player could pick any one of them to play while the others would be companions. The back story would be a little bit different for each but then they would meet up fairly early in the game. I don't think the voice acting cost would be prohibitive because the actors would all be playing a large part anyway.

As long as one of the choices is human, I don't really care.

What others said. Sounds great but would use up too much time and resources. They will probably have to cut corners to the point when it won't be worth it.
