I probably haven't researched this as much as most of you, but I stand 100% on the side of the Templars. My reasons are:

1. I have always preferred to play a warrior class.
2. I have always preferred to play the good / righteous side.
3. Mages are always overpowered in RPGs and I like to go against the grain.

The Dalish mages? Do not practise any form of magic related to spirits, as they believe them all to be dangerous.

Really?
Zethrian could have fooled me.

Why can't it be like this? What does the good side even mean in this conflict?

Well yes, you make a good point.  Who is good and not good is often a matter of viewpoint.  I'm just saying that as far as I can tell (since I've only played DA:O - I haven't read any books) the Templars are the archetypal righteous Paladin types.

Except when they are beating up, raping or tranquilizing mages who don't agree with their power trip.

Mages cause I dislike the chantryand can become more powerful as a mage as opposed to a templar. I also support the dhalish mages. Only downside is I'd be an enemy to the Qunari and I like them.

A Volus could never be a templar. They're too slow. And cowardly. Unless, you're that one in ME2 who thinks he is a God, I've never run into a volus who actually wants to fight when it comes down to it, unless you're giving them money in return or something else valuable. Soz. :)

Mages can be just as out of control, just as evil, to people who don't agree with their power trip.

LoL Paladin templars!?
Damn paladins have flaws like sometimes racism toward some races but generally they are as hell devoted to good templars don't care about morality , paladin would try stop and arrest meredith before she kiled mages because peoples will want revenge but templars helped her.

I'm leaning towards mages, but I'll probably support the templars as well in various playthroughs. Both sides have their merits and flaws, and I suspect the outcome of aligning with either side somehow won't be what we'd expect/like to happen.

Are there exceptions to the above? Yes, of course. Such as Merril. I'm also sure there are plenty of Tal-Vashoth Saarebas. However neither of the aforementioned groups of mages are even remotely large enough to warrant ruling Thedas.

My stance is it depends on the location:

Ferelden: nothing that bad there, so little to no chance of maleficarum there

Kirkwall: THE CITY SHOULD BE DESTROYED BECAUSE OF HOW THIN THE VEIL IS THERE! Mages+thin veil=army of abominations likely.

Everywhere else: not enough info on them.

Mages are dangerous and all that, we just never get to see it in DAO. Denerim's back alleys were as dangerous as the abomination filled tower. So I'm not all that convinced Mages are a special kind of dangerous.

Redcliffe was as much a consequence of making pariahs out of them. Couldn't get proper training, had to go to a guy who had insufficient training himself, and things go bad.

Kirkwall? Well, everyone was crazy in Kirkwall.

Try not being such jerks and maybe that stuff won't happen. And you have to try at some point. Teach them, mandatory even, to be responsible. Train regular guards like Templars.

Supposedly they can alter your very thoughts. But it doesn't appear the guys who actually want to do that are capable of being subtle about it. They turn full moustache twirl omnicidal instead of ambitious and smart. And there's even a defense against that magic.

I stand with the Templars. Their cause is just and you can't let anyone with the ability to nuke an entire city just wander around. The loaded gun analogy is rather apt, as Mages possess power that normal people don't.

Where I disagree with the Templars is in how they operate, but that has more to do with the Chantry's rulings than the Templar enforcers.

I will go for a middle way if possible in most of my play throughs.

Mages need to be watched as they are simply to dangerous if left to their own devices.
eg. take rhys for example, he has no idea he is being influanced by a demon (nor does anyone else except lambert)
The order however needs to be changed back to what they where originally ment to stand for and need to work better with the circle to stop coraling mages into corners where they have no other options left then turn to the forbidden arts

I was going to write a long essay about which #Team I would join, but then I thought of something...

Why don't I just join both rather than just 1? Why can't Mages and Templars fight against the Chantry? To force the Divine to change things to make both parties happy?

I can't see the logic behind locking up Mages and forcing them to live the rest of their lives in the circle. Once they've passed the Harrowing they should be allowed out and function like any other citizen. When Mages behave badly, or break the law in the city, instead of getting the city guard to take care of it they send in the Templars to take care of bad Mages. Once arrested by the Templars the Mage is sent back to the circle in the prison unit where they await their trial. If found guilty, and depending on the severity of their crimes, they stay there until their time is up.

Magic exists to serve man, and never to rule over him yet the Chantry doesn't allow Mages use their magic for practical use. For those who excel well in destruction inferno type of magic, why not let them work for a smithing company? For those who prefer to use healing magic, why not allow them to toggle along beside other Templars while tracking down Apostates? If a fight erupt theirs a medic on the scene to heal the wounded. The Mages would not have to depend on blood magic if they were treated good.

I stand with the Mages because the Chantry and the Templars just anger me. Stupid religious zealots and fanatics persecuting people just because of who they are. I'll become the Cyclops to the Mage's Mutant race! We want peace but will strike out any hostility with total and absolute force.

If I can I stand for myself, lightly allied with the Mages. Maybe I get to create a new group and a new norm for people so there is no more Circle and no More Templars. If I'm really lucky I can strike down the Chantry! What has the Maker done aside from given us Darkspawn? Nothing. Not that my characters don't believe in the Marker, they just hate him. ^_^

My morally complex view of DA:

Blood magic. Is it really that bad?

It can be pretty useful. Wear your sash of forbidden secrets proudly!
