We're only now in the recent decade and a half or so detecting new planets. It's hard enough to detect even gas giants. And the method used is doppler effect. Not clear observation. Moon sized relays in another stellar system would be extremely difficult to detect. The one in the Sol system wouldn't however. I've always found that questionable myself. Did it get moved here? Or was it always here?

Detecting planets is hard, because they only reflect light. Mass relays are a light source. MUCH easier to detect.

I choose not to argue about the Sol relay, because it's explained in the game why it wasn't found (a somewhat weak explanation, but still)

And I stress that I'm only arguing this here for the sake of showing that focusing so much on plotholes sucks the fun out of the entire game. I really, really love all of the Mass Effect games.

Well, like I said earlier, you don't have to discuss it. Don't let it suck the fun out of your games. I wouldn't either if it annoyed me that much. I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything here, but I don't know why it matters what other people do.

I'm just amazed that people can discuss the ending of a highly fantastical game, with sentient, godlike machine to such a great extent, claiming it ruined their entire gaming experience, when the basic premise of the game is just utter bs. A year after the game has been released even!

If you can get over a giant error like all the actively used mass relays somehow being missed by humanity for well over a century, surely you can get over the ending.

But apparantly not.

Fair enough. That's a plot hole worth considering.

I have my own plot hole that doesn't resort back as far as yours, but just to ME1. I don't even understand why I should play all of these games if the actual "ideal" solution is what Saren proposed all along. Apparently, he was the true hero of the citadel, after all. And sovereign our savior. Because I killed sovereign, I inflicted more suffering on humanity by the Collectors constructing a new human reaper to carry out Sovereign's job. And more suffering via the illusive man.

Anyways, I don't promise to play it, but I'll be curious wtf the new ME4 is even about and how they dig themselves out.

Very skeptical of ME4. If it's gonna be a sequel, the only possible option I see is:

Reapers dead, the Leviathan rise again.

Saren was trying to turn every organic being into slaves for the Reapers...Saren wasn't really talking about Synthesis.

And I don't think the Human Reaper was supposed to replace Sovereign. To complete the human Reaper they would have needed to target Earth. The Collectors aren't capable of successfully invading Earth. Every cycle ends with the birth of a new Reaper. Putting these pieces together lead me to believe that with or without Sovereign, the creation of the human Reaper would have been attempted.

Synthetic people will kill all organic people...
We must kill, enslave, or experiment on people to stop this...

The Catalyst is basically Hitler...

I don't think slavery was originally his intention. He was deluded and indoctrinated, not evil. He thought the best of organics could show their usefulness to the Reapers. He tries to persuade Shep to this line of thinking, by saying Shep would be an asset to them. And by preserving the "best of the best" so to speak, he'd be saving lives. I don't think he was exactly proposed with Synthesis as we discovered it, but something along those lines gave him his hope to fight against Shepard. "The relationship is symbiotic, organic and machine intertwined, a union of flesh and steel, the strengths of both, the weaknesses of neither! I am a vision of the future Shepard, the evolution of all organic life!"

Um yea....His reasoning was that if organics can prove to be useful tools for the Reapers. He referenced the Geth Heretics quite a few times when explaining this.

"Is submission not preferable to extinction?" In other words, would you rather be a slave or die? Synthesis is not even close to this. It's morally ambiguous, but for a different reason.

Forgive me if I get into headcanon, but I'm starting to think that in his mind, he saw Synthesis. The reality is that he was becoming a garden variety Maurader/husk type, and just a tool for the Reapers.

Which is how I kind of see the Synthesis ending as well. It's a huge mindfvck that Harbinger pulls. It all depends on what timeframe ME4 takes place though, so I'll reserve judgement. Synthesis is something I want to choose, but it's too good to be true.

Yea, I don't pick Synthesis because I don't actually believe the status quo is as bad as the Catalyst would like us to believe.

So what, you think someone's choice in a video game reflects his/her integrity as a human being?

Which would also apply to Mass Relays.  If anything, a Mass Relay would show up as a highly irregular object in space, sometimes emitting light, mostly reflecting it from a nearby sun. (or the other way around, if it was used frequently)

Like someone with spastic fingers using a flashlight at night.

That, or don't obey to any physical laws whatsoever.

And yes, I highly simplified the detection of planets. But the fact that Mass Relays are light sources would make them stand out against anything in the universe, except stars.

Depends on how much light, doesn't it? And how close the active relays are to Earth.

If we can detect the reflection of light off of planets NOT EVEN IN OUR GALAXY, I'm pretty sure we'd be able to detect the mass relays. No matter how dim they are compared to stars.

For the love of God, seriously.

You'll probably have to reserve judgement forever. Bio isn't going to release a post-Synthesis game, so IT-Lite can hang around without ever being disproven.

But wasn't the Charon relay dormant? It was mistaken for Pluto's moon, until the Prothean ruins found on Mars indicated otherwise.

Where are you getting NOT EVEN IN OUR GALAXY from? And that method's only worked with gas giants according to your own link.

I'm not saying the math couldn't work, but you're assuming an awful lot of light coming from the active relays.

If we were to detect a mass relay in a far off star system with our equipment, it's not likely that we'd be able to determine what the object was. We certainly would not see the shape of a relay, as they're not that big. Also, only a small fraction of the relays would be visible, depending largely on how long ago they were built in relation to their position in the galaxy. The light from the majority of them would probably not have reached our system yet, as many of them are many thousands of lightyears away, and can be easily obscured by planets or stars in their respective systems. Granted, the milky way is about 120 some odd thousand lightyears in diameter.

Only 4 relays are relatively close to the local cluster. Considering the vastness of space, and having no real point of reference to determine that an obscure light source would actually be some form of paleotech, it's not unreasonable that humanity would not really know what they were looking at, if they even happened to come across these blips at all.
