It's called "role-playing" - note that ME is nominally a RPG. If you have only ever played Halo* then it's perhaps not surprising that you don't get it.

* You mentioned that Hale appeared in Halo 4 rather than any one of the other 274 works IMDB lists, including more notable appearances like Metroid or Kotor.

Personally, I just think that "male space marine saves the world" is a bit of a cliché and I have little patience for trolls.

Presumably- the same reason anyone plays a character of the opposite gender.

'Cuz they wanna.

I have many gaming traditions. Don't know why, I just do. For example, I have to play every main series Ubisoft Prince of Persia game to 100% completion, a streak that lasted till that stupid dog leash DRM prevented me from buying Forgotten Sands. When I play a Command & Conquer game, I always play the bad guys first. And when I play a RPG, my flagship character is always a ranger/archer/sniper type character. It's just tradition.

Playing female characters when I can is another tradition. I believe in kicking ass and looking good doing it.

I find it easier to role play as a female in a game.

When I play as a male character I tend to project myself into the role. Play as a female and I start to think on what the character would do.

Refreshing change. I had overdoes of male lead characters. I also can't deny the fact that she's more pleasing to my eye. I've like Hale's acting ever since I played Freelance (although her Jedi Academy performance wasn't too good... slips happen), however I think Meer is equally great in this game. Also it just feels fitting that Shepard is female.

I have a bit similar view. I enjoy the story more. If I play male character, it quickly ends up being "me". When playing female character, it's somewhat easier to just enjoy the story and see how the character develops. If I play "me", I don't get attached to the character same way. They end up being distant.

Role-playing is taking on the persona of someone other than you. Your own gender should not enter into the equation.

For me as a male gamer if the game gives me the option to play as female or male I always choose female. I've played enough games as a male. It's nice to change it up every now and then

Jennifer Hale does a wonderful job voicing femshep

The romance with Samantha is the best in the trilogy. She is very intelligent, good looking and her voice. AWR was perfect in voicing her. She is the only romance ny femshep has done.

OP: you 're not a space Marine, and probably not any other kind of Marine. Why are you playing one in ME?

I rather like the breakaway from the standard issue male protagonist saving the day routine, much like Aliens' Ripley. Also, it makes a pretty big difference in that I see a gap in the quality of the voice acting. Hale, in my opinion, voices the role of Shepard much better than Meer. Far too often, his lines sound flat and uninteresting. The expressiveness of her voice carries better in even something as simple as squad banter on missions, which makes it more amusing or meaningful overall. My gender has nothing to do with the protagonist I want to represent in the story, because I'm not playing the part of Shepard; I'm merely observing it, even as I guide the character's choices and combat.

In the past most RPG's make you play as a guy with no customization. Unless it was a female related game or for advisement sakes. Look at the first Fable. The best game of that set and yet your only choice was a guy who looked like he got belt sanded in the face when you finished the game. So when I can play a female I go with it. Besides I made my fem shep on 360 when ME was 360 only look like she been through hell and back. Not your standard pretty face with out scars.

There is a theory that male gamer prefers to look at a woman's derrière than a man's for several hours straight.

Why do you care?

I think if someone dunks french fries into mayonnaise it is an affront to God and nature. I can't fathom it, but apparently people do and if they like it, so be it. It's not my place to judge or care what others do.

For me Shepard is female as it's both refreshing and feels right for the character.

I'm a guy and I always play male characters in video games as I like to project myself into a hero that is of my own gender (and if possible looks like me). However, my canon Shepard is female. I think that Meer did a good job with the voice acting, however I found Hale's performance absolutely stellar and it gave the game an entirely new dimension.

One: It's an RPG! That means you play as something else than yourself. E.G. a female soldier. That's why there's a "ROLE" in Role Playing Games.

Two: I think Mark Meer's voice acting sucks when playing paragon, especially in ME

Three: Because it's fun? I have played both ME and ME2 through several times, and it's fun in the sense that I actually play differently, depending on the gender of my character. Jennifer Hale is far better as a paragon than Mark Meer is, but Meer is probably better at being renegade. At any rate, all my FemSheps are paragons or paragades, where as my MaleSheps are renegades.

Try playing a gnome paladin mounted upon his trusty riding dog, Hurricane! While crying his mighty battlecry, "Let's blow them away"!

Seriously, how can anyone 'not' want to play Femshep when she's an option? She has the added benefit of not being a gnome too. She can attack above the knees.

If it helps, you get 50 man points for the first time you play as her. I regret it's come down to enticing a person with sweetie's to get someone playing FemShep, but like shampoo.....

Your worth it ;)

I play both so I got no room to judge anyone lol. Though I have more male Shepards than I do female Shepards, but by the time I've seen everything Mass Effect has to offer, I will have a balance of the two.

Have a heart man....... No one deserves to be compared to the Diana 'Pufferfish' Allers.

As for Traynor. Points awarded for taking a leaf out of Viconia's romance mod and having most of her romance scenes take place while 'wet'.

Well first and foremost, I have no idea how many boys/men play as female Shepard.
Secondly, I can only really speak on my behalf.

I'm a man.
I've played as both Male and Female Shepard.
Here are the reasons.
  • I generally prefer to play as a female character whenever the choice is available. Simply because there are very few female protagonists in gaming. There are in fact plenty of female protagonists but they are vastly outnumbered by male protagonists and they are often scantilly clad.

Besides, if I wanted to play a male soldier/warrior I could play: Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo, Space Marine 4000, Witcher, God of War, Darksiders, The Legend of Zelda, Infameous. I love badass males too, but I've had a huge overdose. Playing as a female character is a relief, even if I'm playing a similiar kind of role.

  • Voice Actor Jennifer Hale. I love her performance of Commander Shepard. She has a good understanding of who Shepard is, and how to approach aggressive, neutral and diplomatic speech. Her romantic dialogue is hit and miss, but I can say the same for Mark Meer too.
  • Love interests. I prefer Garrus, Thane, Traynor and  Kaidan. Sure she doesn't have the quantity of romantic love interests but Garrus is the ultimate bro, Thane works as the sensitive badass (a combination that only Thane can pull of), Kaidan is the kind of guy I want to share a beer with and Traynor is the kind of girl I'd want to date. Tali and Jack are really good choices for a male Shepard.
  • Gender Specific Dialogue. Very rare outside of romance, but talking to Udnot Bakara gave me an interesting girl to girl moment (which I won't spoil).
  • Gender Irrelevance. I love the fact that at least amongst humans, men and women get the same opportunities. Become the female badass of the story and no one makes some annoying "go girl" comment (as if a kickass female is rare).
  • A female character who isn't rescue bait, damsel in distress, sex object etc. Not a gender stereotype but an actual female character.
  • Women in the army. Women in the army may not be as rare as it used to be but they still make up a minority. The fact you can pick a gender, reflects the growing acceptance of female soldiers in real life and the possibilty that one day men and women could be on equal footing.
  • I genuinely find kick ass women attractive.
