- I regularly field questions from people asking about how the site works, or asking for links. I can't friend every BSN member so they can continue to PM me in this way.

- My Friends list is for the purpose of my "News Feed," not to determine who I can or cannot communicate with.

- PMing mods has been considered the preferred method over the "report" link for a long time. There are many good reasons for that, which the mods have repeatedly stated they prefer over the "report" function, because it allows for faster response.

- It would make MUCH more sense to simply restrict the PM function as it relates to Mods, rather than deactivate it for the entire BSN community.

- There is a rule against having personal conversations in the forums, and this change will severely negatively impact the mods' ability to enforce that rule effectively.

- Disabling communication with BSN members is contrary to the stated purpose of the Bioware Social Network.

I would really, really like to see a dialogue with the Site Administrators happen, so we can negotiate a compromise solution, because I really don't see this change having anything but a negative impact on almost every aspect of the BSN.

well stated Jeremiah.
i hope this is the first overture to some actual communication on this issue, instead of the banhammer i see coming for anyone who questions this policy change.

Some of the devs have even aksed users to PM them instead of using the report button...

There seem to be new mods now (BiowareMod01, etc) which might mean the Report button actually does something instead of being routed to EA Customer Service.

I kind of did some PMing to Alan a few times regarding questions within the gaming industry.

I also want to get a hold of someone for an article im developing, an interview as well. the PM was my best bet to push that through.

I wondered if those were new!  That would be comforting if there is at least someone responding to the report button. Honestly... this change made me wonder if the active moderation is deliberately being dialed back... :?

I've pm'd mods before too- and pm'd people I'm not friends with to clarify a position or to initiate dialogue and conversation. Too bad, BW.

Disabling communication with BSN members makes no sense and I'd like to know why it has to be done that way as well.

All my mps come from people on the bsn who are either disagreeing / agreeing with me over a topic, or people wanting to tell me something specific ( like I loved your mass effect fanfiction I read on the bsn ) , while they are not in my friend list.

I have some suspicions as to why this came about, but speculation won't accomplish much. I'm mainly hoping there will be a thread by a Site Admin to discuss a way to adjust the change + rules to find a better way to accomodate everyone.

As far as I was aware, the "Report" button had been disconnected entirely back before the many floods of spammer attacks, because trying to report those in that fashion over a weekend, when Moderators might not be available to send any PMs to, weren't reaching BSN at all at the time, so if it isn't fixed, we might as well throw in the towel here and find other places to discuss the old Bioware that was.

My separate message here specifically addresses the broken Report Button situation versus those Spammers.

P. S.  I was playing Black Isle games twelve years ago, 13-14, or however long it's been since IWD and the other one I liked rather less, before Bioware had a website, and Black Isle did, where I was a founding member, and the same eleven years ago when Bioware did start up their own web site (now only a memory), but that hasn't earned me an ounce of credit on BSN (although the Answer HQ was interested enough to offer a free T-shirt to get me to sign up over there).

Bumping, because it's the only surviving one I made. Anyone on my FL with this post in their feed, it's in the help forum, so it'll probably need a bit of friendly bumping to do any good. :)

It should be optional, like most forums. BioWare can set it to default "off" (no PM's from anyone but friends) and then those who wish to openly receive messages from anyone (such as the OP) can switch the option on.

What an asinine rule. This should be something that the user can toggle on his/her end not a blanket "solution".

Sometimes you want to give somebody a quick note without having to state it in public.

I mean, heck, that's how I got most people on my friend list to begin with. Is it really common to add people from seeing them post in threads? To me at least it's been much more common that we've taken a certain off-topic discussion to PM, or we've otherwise started conversing in PM, and only after that do we add one another.

Are we supposed to start saying "hey, I want to tell you something in private so can you please confirm my friend request" out on the boards? It sounds very awkward and also leads to empty posts that are of no interest to other people.

You guys are forgetting the comment wall.

And, this thread is kind of also in Off-Topic, where a couple of mods are discussing it with us.

Actually, this was moved here from the DA:I forums. I posted it in several places, which in retrospect, I realize was a violation of the rules.

I posted it ten minutes after the original splash went up. I don't really know if it was the first one, but obviously it hasn't gained a whole lot of traction in this particular forum, although it does seem to be an appropriate place for it.

So, the OP (slightly edited to soften the language in a few spots) has been copied into the Off-Topic Thread, where I have also posted other points regarding the issue.

One of which is that many BSN members - including mods - have private profiles, and cannot be interacted with by posting comments on their wall.

The wall is also a "Public" message, not a "private" one, which is at the heart of the issue.

which thread couldn't find it, but it is a good point that it will be impossible to make friends by just what they post. I have had several conversations with people since I joined, but no friends, that would have cut me out from any private talking with others.

it baffles me a little

Agreed on all accounts OP. THis new PM policy is not helpful at all.

Just give every user the option to be pm-able by everyone or not (moderators included). Problem solved without restricting anyone (or everyone as it is the case now).

Also agree....please reconsider the use of PMing for members not on ones Friend List. So many reasons to keep communication options open.

Please just make the Moderators non-pm. Why punish everyone? Makes things more tangled and difficult if a large mod community is working on one project.

I am using PM pretty much the same way. Or used to, at any rate, prior to this inexplicable change.

I am adding my voice to the choir here: please do reconsider this, dear mods.

This is such a bizarre development. I don't even really use PMs all that much but I hope they reverse this decision (or at least give us the option to change it in our account settings). It's a useful feature that helps keep the discussion threads free of clutter.
