I support this motion, too. I keep my profile private, and will not change that, nor will I accept FR without corresponding with a person first to know who they are.

Ah, this thread is reasonable and more constructive than the funny shenanigans over at the ME3 multiplayer board a week back.

I really do hope the mods take this in consideration. Otherwise, the policy change is just an indicator of laziness or lack of foresight.

Personally, I get PMs every once in a while from people who are not on my friends list, but have suggestions/questions regarding my mods. I understand that each mod has it's own comment and discussion threads, but I have no way of seeing any new posts without manually checking each project. (There currently is no update message for such things)

Someone on this thread mentioned users having the option of adjusting their PM box privacy settings which could be a better idea if possible to implement. The "Send message" could be toggled to on/off.

Agree.
This way, it makes no sense for me. I've used PMs in the past to offer help to people or to give feedback on their posts. That stuff is not necessarily interesting for other forum users.
And even if I wanted to post such things on the thread: Threads here may move pretty fast. If someone posts on page 18 and I only get to read their post hours, maybe days later when the thread already has 46 pages, it's well possible that they won't see my message. Not everybody reads every follow-up post.
If someone doesn't want to receive PMs from unknown people, why don't you give them the option "PMs from people on my friends list only"? That should protect them from unwanted discussion.

Edit - One more addition: The suggested mode (either open for all PMs or only for friends' PMs) leaves the problem of troll PMs. People who don't mind getting messages could still get unwanted mail from people who like annoying others. For that, it would help if there were a function to prohibit PMs from certain users.

I am not a modder but have helped test mods, that being said there are times I have sent pm's to people that are not friends that I felt was 1. inappropriate to put on the stated forum discussion or mod discussion, 2. none of any one else's business on that forum or mod discussion or 3. in response to a question they ask on a forum that never got a response and has been over a month or so, i will send a pm, possibly thinking maybe they will not see that response on the forum. That being said no one has complained that not being a friend I have sent them pm's. I think this is a bad idea, like others have said I agree with a function where you can set to not receive pm's from our individual settings. Please reconsider this. Thanks

This is a horrible rule. Everybody on my friends list is someone I had a private discussion with by PM that I would not post, either entirely or at least in significant part, on the public forums. Those conversations cannot be had on the public forums. I have used PM once or twice to respond to someone after a particular thread's been closed, also, for one thing, or simply to actually have a discussion about something said in a poll or whatever the case may be, a personal conversation. Those kinds of discussions aren't appropriate for public forums, and it's not like I'm going to email somebody or want them emailing me either.

Without the PM function, honestly, the whole friends list thing would be useless. It's not like I'm going to invite people I already know from the outside world to come discuss things here when I can just talk to them if I feel like it. Those people aren't on my friends list.

Very bad decision, BioWare. If the mods or the devs don't want people PMing them, just install that setting for their accounts. Let them decide for themselves, but don't force it on the rest of us.

I have already added my own "Nay" vote against this crap. Now, I see that Bioware wants to rub our noses in this nasty limitation. I already KNOW and abhor the damn thing, why do I have to see the same announcement every Monday?
