Moderation Update:[/b]
Starting now, users cannot send Private Messages (PMs) to anyone that is not on their friend lists. Moderators can still PM you; if one has, you can respond to them regarding that situation via PM. This is an effort to encourage our users to discuss topics on the forums or use the "Report" link instead of sending PMs to our moderators. If you have a complaint about another user or see something that breaks our site rules in a thread, please use the "Report" link. One of our moderators will address the situation and PM you if it is necessary. Thank you for your continued participation on the BSN!

WHAT!??

BioWare, I sincerely think this is not good, because we are a community with an inmense number of users, and sometimes we are going to want to communicate with someone who is not on our list, besides I think you should have limited that rule only for moderators.

What is the point in this? Are they trying to get us to be social? I'm happy being anti-social.

We're basically unable to talk to a stranger whose profile is private.

And here I thought this was supposed to be a social network, BioWare?

Didn't Epler once say that the report button basically does this.

^ Yep. Unless they changed that. Otherwise you'd have to PM the mods... Er...

Anyway I notice you're still able to message strangers you're already in a PM chain with at least.

The timing of this change is a bit strange.

First, let me just say, from my own perspective, that the pop-up message is poorly written.  It's confusing.

Now, what is not in that message is that the reporting tool is now being fixed, and it should be much easier for moderators to respond to concerns introduced by the "Report This" button.  You will also see more moderators being active on the forums... which means we must rely on this fixed, centralized system instead of relying on PMs.

The message also seems to imply that restricing PMs to friends is only for moderation purposes... from what I understand, there's also a desire to limit the amount of PM spam that gets sent too and fro.  So, yes, it is an attempt to get people to discuss things in the open forums rather than just via PM.  Of course, you can still send people a friends request.

EDIT: For grammar.  I need more coffee.

Uh....Interesting?  Don't really know how to respond to that, I'm not overly active here anymore but I predict situations in which this new update could present a problem to a lot of people here. I could also see how it may help too. I don't know. Personally, like I said, not sure how I feel about it.

It's weird but BSN is an old-school site at this point that gets unnecessary updates, yet is falling apart in other places. Part of it's charm.

On a side note...are the new mods actually the sentience of the Xbox one, and basically this will turn into Metal Gear, just without snake?

Seriosuly, I think these plans have been in the works for a while, but they wanted to put them in place with the increased usership expected after E3.  All quite logical.  At least, that the perspective of this one, volunteer moderator.

What if someone wants to send you a link or something through a pm, that they don't want to post on the forums, but they don't want to be your friend?

Bioware is getting as bad as Microsoft with its restrictions.

I PM people who aren't on my friend's list all the time. Its typically how I become friends with someone on the BSN. Talking to them first over PM. I don't like this change.

My main complaint would be, how would you get support if you're having issues with your forum account now?
