With the PM's you could message people in forums you didn't have access to, it was a way to be a part of those conversations without actually activating any games. And a useful tactic for avoiding trolls. Sometimes people would post on your behalf. Basically it made those forum locks pointless. Not sure if cutting off PM's to stop that was their intention, but it is a casualty.

So the "Report this post" button now actually does something? Would've been worth mentioning in the update text, because as it was it told us the exact opposite of what the mods told for quite some time now, even in stickied posts at the top of the respective subforums. Ah well...

Not sure how I feel about "No PMs to not-friends". It's weird, and I hope if we actually try to discuss things in the threads there won't be locks and bans for taking things off-topic. Ah well...

BSN has never been a democracy.

Word. I can't believe someone had the edge to call it that.

First, let me just say, from my own perspective, that the pop-up message is poorly written.  It's confusing.

Now, what is not in that message is that the reporting tool is now being fixed, and it should be much easier for moderators to respond to concerns introduced by the "Report This" button.  You will also see more moderators being active on the forums... which means we must rely on this fixed, centralized system instead of relying on PMs.

The message also seems to imply that restricing PMs to friends is only for moderation purposes... from what I understand, there's also a desire to limit the amount of PM spam that gets sent too and fro.  So, yes, it is an attempt to get people to discuss things in the open forums rather than just via PM.  Of course, you can still send people a friends request.

EDIT: For grammar.  I need more coffee.

So if you guys are removing the ability to send PMs to people who are not on you friends list to cut back on spam, will you also be removing the 1 pm per minute limit? I never was a fan of that feature myself, makes it kinda hard to manage multiple pm chains. It is good to hear that they fixed the report button though, if we couldn't pm mods and the button was still broken, this site would be 90% links to streams of soccer games within 3 days.

Well then the solution is easy. We just need to find the AI's called RM and GZ somewhere on the BSN, and upload a worm cluster modified by a newbie ME3 MP prodigy up in that s***. Of course it could also bring down CH, but, meh. Now any volunteers willing to make it through a deadly banhammerwave hallway? Anyone...?

So what about group PMs where some people in said group conversation may not have everybody involved on their friend's list, how does that work?

They will work, just like if your in a group PM with someone who blocked you, you can still talk to them in the PM.

What if someone wants to send you a link or something through a pm, that they don't want to post on the forums, but they don't want to be your friend?

Yep. Creates an artifical barrier that stifles befriending or setting up games/projects - it's clunky to have to wait for someone else to look at your request, hope they hit accept, and then finally be able to send them a message in real time.

A message is a proper introduction, a random profile view is more "alien."

Most of the messages I want to send are not relevant to any individual thread anyway and would be spam in a BSN thread - no one likes it when two people go into a back and forth about a tiny niche that only appeals to them. I don't see how hindering PMs makes the forums better - just full of more stuff that would have worked better in a private conversation.

The only way this really makes sense if PMs are setting the servers on fire or something, and if that's so,...why are things configured that way?

First, "you guys" really doesn't include me, as I am not an employee of EA or BioWare, just a volunteer mod.

Second, I would frame the discussion like this:  People have LONG complained that moderation on our forums was hapazard at best.  "Why don't you have more mods?" people would ask.  "Why are mods so inconsistant?" they decry.

Well, these changes with PMs, encouraging the use of the reporting tool, and some other behind-the-scenes stuff are designed to address those above-mentioned concerns.

As to the 1 PM/minute limitation, I don't know... but I'll forward that to the admins for their consideration.

From what I understand, the functionality of groups is not affected by this.  If anyone learns differently, post someothing here.  I will also accept friends requests now, so you can always friends me and then PM me.

I think it's important to have a place to discuss these changes to BSN-- however, let's not get off track with broader discussions of government, political ideology, or religious ideology (the correct terms is "theocracy", BTW).

Please stay on topic.

I have no problem with this change. It prevents harassment and unwanted conversations. Although if we can't PM the mods, we need better report response.

Kind of a baby out with the bathwater though - if there was a setting to allow you to only get PMs from friends you could enable if you were being harassed, you'd have the best of both worlds.

(That doesn't seem to be the compelling reason for the current configuration anyway, as per the message pop and mod posts here, so just changing that execution wouldn't have been the same thing.)

Yeah, occasionally someone I've never spoken to on this forum will PM me about something I posted, or I'll do the same, and it's a very cool thing, especially when I meet new BSN friends that way.  I don't accept every single friend request, for fear of giving ad spammers my info, so being forced to "friend people blind" isn't practical.  SIGH.

If moderation becomes extremely scarce here (no offense to RaenImrahl or the others, but the known mods can't be here 24/7), I'll just have to find another forum, and I'm sure even more of the good, sane posters will follow suit.

I suppose so, I don't mind if they change it to add options so people can only receive PM from friends. I don't see the need to PM strangers though, but if it's something that can be implemented, I'm not opposed to it, TBH. The main issue I have with the current change is we can't communicate with the mods if there's a problem, and based on my experience so far with the report button, it doesn't work very well.
