If moderation becomes extremely scarce here (no offense to RaenImrahl or the others, but the known mods can't be here 24/7), I'll just have to find another forum, and I'm sure even more of the good, sane posters will follow suit.
Funny you should mention 24/7 moderation... you may have noticed at the bottom of forums how several new moderator accounts have been added. BioWareMod01, BioWareMod02, etc.

When you mean PM spam, are you talking about a problem caused by spam/phishing bots or just the sheer amount of user to user PMs?RaenImrahl wrote...
.. from what I understand, there's also a desire to limit the amount of PM spam that gets sent too and fro. So, yes, it is an attempt to get people to discuss things in the open forums rather than just via PM. Of course, you can still send people a friends request.
Messages to non-friends are useful in trying to set up MP games with strangers, working on projects on fan creations, asking people if they have links to certain things and such without wanting to become their friends, etc.Battlebloodmage wrote...
I suppose so, I don't mind if they change it to add options so people can only receive PM from friends. I don't see the need to PM strangers though, but if it's something that can be implemented, I'm not opposed to it, TBH. The main issue I have with the current change is we can't communicate with the mods if there's a problem, and based on my experience so far with the report button, it doesn't work very well.
I understand if you don't find the utility useful, but for others with different active interests, it can be a drag to have to add everyone as a friend. Amazon patents stuff like 1-click shopping for a reason: the more hoops you need to get through and blind friend requests you need to accept, the more of a barrier exists.
As for your other point, yeah - there are times I think when PMing a moderator might be prudent in a way that report wouldn't be. Hopefully they roll that back after people readjust to the idea of reporting instead of PMing mods.

Wouldn't this mean mods will get spammed with friend requests?
Perhaps in the short term. I doubt the new mods accounts will accept them, but I have no specific info on that.
EDIT: I should probably add that, while I am happy to accept friend requests, you may find that I will be referring people to the reporting tool more, now that it is fixed.

From my perspective, I would say the former. However, there have been times when I get complains from one user because of the abusive messages sent by another-- users will make several alternate accounts to get around the "block user" function... so it will be nice to see less of that with the new friend-to-friend PM situation.

Not my place to say. But I think it likely that different people may use those accounts at different times, as is common on other forums/websites. They are utility accounts. Hence, the rest of use should not expect a lot of accepted "friends" requests out of them. This also might better explain the shift in emphasis from sending PMs to mods back to the reporting tool, now that the latter is being fixed.

This seems like a strange thing to force on us without the option to turn off. I get a lot of messages about Mass Effect 3's game mechanics from people who are not on my friends list that either saw my signature or else had another BSNer tell them that I'm probably the person they should ask about it.
Unfortunately this new rule is going to really hurt being able to do that kind of thing.

Thanks. I was only ask because the mod names sound very generic, so I thought they could just be random employees from Bioware who look over the board from time to time. I guess it doesn't matter as long as there are more enforcers on the forum.RaenImrahl wrote...

I get PMs quite often from people that aren't my friends and that, frankly, I am unlikely to interact with again in the long-term... I'd rather not have to accept their friend request just to answer a simple question of theirs, and then have more clutter in my newsfeed.

Not only that, we won't be able to PM devs or some other staff in a special situation.
I think this change will actually backfire for the community increasing the flood on all subforums and will make people being less closer than before.
I use to get messages from people who is not on my friendlist as well, now they won't be able unless they friend me.
it's a long process that is actually quite annoying to follow.
What i don't know is if they couldn't block the PMs only to mods, because that would be fine i think, but not among users.
