Wow, I just look at the Multiplayers board, and it was a spam heaven. If you report a thread, could you report the entire state of the board as well if the thread is part of the whole board spam?

"report button" spaming eh?

Disabling PMs was a not cool move BW.
I refuse to friend request random people that I do not know, meaning that my ability to talk to random people that respond to threads with off topic stuff in PMs is completely disabled. I friend people when I know what they're like.

Oh and this will basicly increase the number of ''Hey duckFace!'' threads on the MP forums... which it already has... quite astronomically.

Even if this change was made to reduce PM spam where do you think all that spam is going to go? The regular boards of course. It's already happening on the MP side of things. You can't just pluck down a boulder into the raging river and expect that it does not overflow.

The ME3 MP forum got...not good, so I'll post my opinions on this here.

This seems like a strange thing to force on us without the option to turn off. I get a lot of messages about Mass Effect 3's game mechanics from people who are not on my friends list that either saw my signature or else had another BSNer tell them that I'm probably the person they should ask about it.

Unfortunately this new rule is going to really hurt being able to do that kind of thing.

Not only that, we won't be able to PM devs or some other staff in a special situation.

I think this change will actually backfire for the community increasing the flood on all subforums and will make people being less closer than before.

I use to get messages from people who is not on my friendlist as well, now they won't be able unless they friend me.

it's a long process that is actually quite annoying to follow.

What i don't know is if they couldn't block the PMs only to mods, because that would be fine i think, but not among users.

These are honest concerns I share, curious to see an answer to them.

I think they're doing more in term of protesting. Once it dies down, people may just have to either accept it or move on. The rules did state that using the forum is a privilege rather than a right. Maybe at some points, if they see that the PM feature should come back, they will come back, I guess.

Still. I think that taking out the option to pm most people (unless you somehow manage to friend everyone) is outrageous on such a forum. I've never seen this happen literally anywhere.

And I cannot believe that they did not expect a backlash of any sort.

Unfortunately, the childish behavior of some users in the multiplay forum invalidates your argument, in part.  What incentive does BioWare have to consider revising these changes in the future if the only reaction to it is jackassery?

Can't really argue with that. It's BWs forum. They can do as they please. I guess I'll do what I always do and adapt. Time to round robin me some friends every now and then, even though I don't like it, I guess I'll delete them immediately afterwards if they're not my type.

I was expecting the new mods though, if they're faceless they can be far more effective as people won't get attached to them and if they're rotationary they will always be objective if they manage to distance themselves from us. If all goes well it should be effective.

I'm pretty sure it's been read by everyone now, but since this is the most active surviving thread on the topic, I'll post it here:
_____________
"- I regularly field questions from people asking about how the site works, or asking for links. I can't friend every BSN member so they can continue to PM me in this way.

- My Friends list is for the purpose of my "News Feed," not to determine who I can or cannot communicate with.

- PMing mods has been considered the preferred method over the "report" link for a long time. There are many good reasons for that, which the mods have repeatedly stated they prefer over the "report" function, because it allows for faster response.

- It would make MUCH more sense to simply restrict the PM function as it relates to Mods, rather than deactivate it for the entire BSN community.

- There is a rule against having personal conversations in the forums, and this change will severely negatively impact the mods' ability to enforce that rule effectively.

- Disabling or restricting communication amongst BSN members is contrary to the stated purpose of the Bioware Social Network.

I would really, really like to see a dialogue with the Site Administrators happen, so we can negotiate a compromise solution, because I really don't see this change having anything but a negative impact on almost every aspect of the BSN."

_____

Thank you, Raen, for sharing what you know with us.

Are there any BioWare staff or Site Administrators available to discuss the changes? It's certainly good to hear from the mods about it, but they don't have the ability to discuss potential modifications to the policy.

Glad you put this here.  I will forward this along to some folks.

BTW:  I just tested the new "report" function myself and it works MUCH better than before.  BSN members should feel confident in using it now.

Can you tell us what exactly happens and what teh response time is when we use said report function?
Or is that an NDA thing?
Just curious.

There are people making cases against this that are not resorting to jackassery yet they are going unanswered.

It's easy to answer the people who are making fools of themselves by pointing that out. By answering the easy one and not the other it doesn't look good to those who see it.  (Essentially you're having conversations about jackassery instead of addressing honest concerns.)

***

A free forum hosted by a company for it's product is a method of generating continued player base, unexpected support in the form of knowledgable users (Cyonan comes to mind, the entire resource library has probably added months to the games lifespan to numerous players.) and the possibility of new players joining a community. In short a forum is beneficial to the company thus they exist. If people don't like the forum, they leave. A dead forum generates no review from indirect (Yet quantifiable) sources. For instance, think of how many users found friends on the PS3 or PC when they were on Xbox, and bought another copy of ME3 for a different platform. Indirect yet definitive sales brought about purely from the choice that EA made to create a forum.

Of course they should reconsider their PM structure if the majority forum users disagree with it to such an extent. They're going about it the wrong way but so do most protests. Doesn't make the heart of the matter any more or less relevent, just the size of the spotlight.

Forum users generate revenue, which means on many levels, you want to keep and increase the forum size, not the opposite. (Which means listening to your forum frequenters.)

Seriously, why couldn't we have some kind of statement from a Bioware employee about this? Not that I don't appreciate you trying to clear things up, Raen, but I really don't think it should be up to you to do this.

This is clearly a bad solution to the problem, please rethink this decision and replace it with one that doesn't restrict the social aspect of the "BioWare Social Network" to such an extent.

As many have suggested already; block people from PMing mods, and let members PM other members not on their friends list.

Yours sincerely
A BSN member

So let me get this strait or sideways or whatever..
I'm a newcomer to BSN.
I don't post a bunch and I just recently started playing ME3 multi.

I know that there are people on here that are the go to kind of people when it comes to thing like the Volus or other types of topics.

If I want to ask a person on here a question about a topic that someone said was the go to person about said topic then I have to ask them to become my friend first. Even if it's just a one time thing.
This could get out of hand.
There are too many people on her that don't want to have everybody as a friend.
Wow getting a quick answer for a go to person is gonna be hard work.
And why would I want to become friends with someone I will only talk to once for the most part.
How is that even right.

I one-time PM folks just to ask for or give extra info, especially if their topics gets locked.

Now I have to friend them first? This is just stupid.

Do people even friend each other WITHOUT a PM conversation first? Maybe I've been doing it wrong.

I'm sorry, how does restricting people from using PMs (a ubiquitous feature in every other social site) assist moderation? I'm happy that your "Report" button is becoming everything it'd hoped it be, but this is ridiculous.

That the users they'd like to keep might go somewhere else? I don't mean that in a blackmail way, I mean "making the forum less appealing" way.

If BW/EA values the community, disabling features and making the "good" posters less likely to stay by creating a worse experience isn't a winning strategy. It is one overall aspect of the community, but it's not good to cut off your nose to spite your face just because there's a sizable amount of people are immature.

The MP people made their point in a very poor way but they had a negative reaction because it is a negative change for them. You may not want to "reward" that behavior, but if you curtail easy communication and ultimately affect through whatever choices the activity of your own sections/quality of posting, there are some consequences to the overall "usefulness" of the site, whatever those goals for EA/BW might be.

This does seem like a heavy handed response to.........something.........I guess? What exactly was the problem this change was meant to solve?
The report button now actually does something - great. Bioware should have constantly advertised that fact for a few weeks while also making it impossible for users to PM mods.
Banning private communication on a Social Forum is a bizarre change that will only have a negative effect.

You will also see more moderators being active on the forums... which means we must rely on this fixed, centralized system instead of relying on PMs

Thanks for the info and helping out on the forums. (Oh, and sorry for all that necro spam like two weeks ago, but I wasn't expecting such a "ground swell of support" from other people).

That said, from your description, I'm guessing that:

A. Most of the new mods will be paid.

B. They will be under pressure to prove that they're doing their jobs, which will result in massive crackdowns over tiny details, like police forced to contend with continuously "improving their numbers" rather than genuinely "improving the community they're policing".

This unfortunately sounds like something coming down from up-on-high* that is more about pleasing a vast influx of new people, no matter the cost to the existing culture here. And a culture is what it is (such as it is), for now, at least.

And that's capitalism for you. As Vonnegut was fond of writing, so it goes.

I'm not complaining at you, just quoting you since you provided the info I'm going on.

*Example meeting quote:

"Improve the user experience! Don't expect me to give you any more
direction than that. What do I look like? A highly paid executive project
manager?! Oh, wait...I am. Too bad, deal with it!"

I would like to know where all these new moderators are going to be based.

The xbox.com forum suffers from that most of its moderators are based in North America, this means that when they aren't available the 'report to response' times go up massively. It isn't uncommon for waits of 12 hours to occur for the most foul of language posted on the European boards.

So given this is a global site, are any of these new 'official' moderators going to be based in the EU for example. If not we could end up with reports unseen for a stupid amount of time.

Wanted to private message someone earlier but didn't have them on my friend's list. What do I do? Create a thread saying "Hey X"? That'll just get it closed and reported for spamming. Do I start talking with them in the thread? No, that's against the rules.

I don't see any of the benefits from this implemented system. At all.

If this really does result in more frequent, consistant, and fair moderation, than it's a good thing.  The BSN is in drastic need of that.

I assume instead of clicking on their profile and then clicking "Send message," you would click on "Add as friend."
