Actually, jkthunder, as a Moderator, I enjoy discussing things with community members, and I have suggested to forum admin that Mods and Admins be exempted from the "must be friends to PM" rule because there are plenty of reasons you might need to bend a Mod's ear outside of reporting things.

As for the other side of it, I think Devs get a lot of PMs when they start posting in the forums, and this may have been a way to encourage community members to talk "out loud" rather than feeling like they get to monopolize a Dev's time in PM. I don't actually know the specific reasons why this rule was enacted, but if it's anything like what I just said, it does make sense. Devs, and even forum Admins, have to deal with a lot of stuff as a part of their jobs, and community members may have been taking advantage of the open nature of the BSN and Devs/Admins.

Regardless of the reasons why, I'd like to try out this new system. If it means friending anyone and everyone, I might just have to tough it out, same as all y'all with the new reporting system.

I hear you, but the new rule comes across as extreme, restrictive and largely anti-social... and completely ironic on many levels. I haven't sifted through my account settings enough to check if this is an option, but it seems that giving an individual member, mod, dev, etc the option to accept/not accept PMs would be much more... democratic.

Wulfie, what did you do?

What did he do? I never really found out what he got banned for. I just assumed the mods finally noticed he was insulting everyone in all of his posts - was there something else going on?

There are actually several "Group PMs" that I can remember, as well.

When DragonRacer made her tournament, Deerber, DragonRacer, Zjarcal and I all exchanged messages in a group PM chat to help DR sort out some of the rules before starting the tournament.

At the time, I was only friends with one of them. Granted, that would be a situation where someone would probably be willing to "friend" the people in question for that purpose, but it seems excessive to require it, especially since it would slow down the process.

I assume all four of us couldn't have been included in the first message unless the FRs had been completed, which likely would have taken most of a day. If remember right, DR was on a deadline to get the rules set before the tourney, so under the current system, the tournament probably would have been adversely affected.

I expect to see more callouts from sensitive posters when they get their feelings hurt.

You know, since rage PMs are no longer possible.

Was wulf constantly harassing the mods about "haters" or something? lol. Nice things and why we can't have them, I guess.

He made a blog about moderation and knowing how he loves to express himself, you can put the two together.

Ah, okay. I saw that blog, but for some reason I thought he wrote that... expression of his hurt feelings as a reaction to getting banned (never wrote a blog myself, no idea if you can even write one when you're already banned). Yeah, that guy certainly knew how to express himself in a civil and constructive way... ^^

Speaking of which, who are these numbered bioware mods all of a sudden..? It's like skynect is taking over here too.

They are utility accounts, and can be accessed by multiple people. I believe.

It's funny, I remember a few times when the ME MP section got all crazy, mods and devs said PMs work better than the report button.

This is a stupid move. Then again, I guess it's only right since the gaming industry is making a crap ton of stupid moves all over the place.

I think the intent is to anonymize moderation, so you won't have any negative context when interacting with the "Devs" (from being banned or otherwise disciplined by them).

I don't like this--unless they updated the "Report" button. Now, that's certainly possible, and if it DID happen, then good. But I'll be worried of we're stuck here with no real way to report bad threads.

I still think the new anonymous mod accounts are some kind of automatic mod-bots that are still being tested. I don't have an explanation for this otherwise...

That would make sense. If a certain # of complaints come in, auto-lock.

It could also be inexperienced new mods who don't know WTF they're doing and were responding to complaints that had not moved through the system.

I find this mildly ironic since for years we've been told that if there's a problem that needs a mod's immediate attention, we should, you know, PM them directly instead of working through the Report channels.

This is may seem ironic to you, but the reason we encouraged you to PM a MOd instead of using REPORT THIS was because the report functionality wasn't used by us Moderators. Now, however, the REPORT THIS button has been modified so that we Moderators not only have access to the report information, but are being encouraged to use it in our Moderation.

Yes, the reporting system has been fixed, which is what precipitated this change.  I tested the new reporting system myself earlier today, and it worked well.

Thanks to the mods for discussing this new rule with us. I wish you had more answers though. We could accept this more easily if we were given a logical explanation but from my point of view, I can't imagine why this solution was chosen.

If this measure was to limit PM sent to devs or moderators, why not restrict PM to them only ?

If this was meant to limit harrassment and spam made by multiple accounts, there are other ways to do it : IP restriction, limit PM for new accounts only, block feature. It could be nice to be able to choose if you want to receive messages from strangers, as can be seen on many other forums.

If the goal was to limit the global volume of private messages, I think the 1 minute timer was pretty restrictive already. I know it's costly but it's a very important feature for a community.

Friendships start with talking, ie private messaging. Not the other way around. That's why community members won't be adding each other to be able to PM. They will just refrain from sending the message.
But if you want a community to thrive, you want to allow your members to connect. From a business perspective, you might save on costs but if your users don't make new friends, they won't find any reason to stay.

This is a real relief. Thank you.

Still a disappointment on a lower level, because there are people I PM'd (and actually currently PM) that are not on my friend list. But it saves on flaming no doubt, and saves you guys work.

No, the Moderator0#s have real people behind them. As with all Moderators, they can only deal with issues they see or which have been reported. And they're not the social, hang-out-with-you-guys type like Raen and I are.

No, it's to differentiate them from us named Moderators who are also community members who like to participate in discussion and be chatty and chummy and stuff like that. While there are still people behind those accounts, the Moderator0#s are here only to moderate the BSN.

Calm down, my friend. It was bound to happen sooner or later, given your frequent invitations to Mardi Gras and disc golf and taiko drumming. Also, let's not get off-topic here. ;)
