I had no issue with DA2's art style. The thing I disliked about it was lack of detail. All the environments felt empty and redundant. Just add more life to the cities, more plants and rocks and animals outside the cities, more books on shelves and cups on tables, etc. I think that would help it tremendously. It would make the world feel a lot more organic.
Totally agree with this. The world felt so empty in Dragon age 2. In origins you can see books strewn about in the Mage tower, little details like that add so much to the world and how immersive it is.

Can we go back to when Dragon Age was actually... you know... good?
I'd really like that, but I don't think that will ever happen.

But that WAS DA2's art style. They were going for stronger contour and saturated colour pallete so of course we had way less "clutter" in DA2 than we did in DA:O. They even said as much in an interview.

I liked the opening scene and the carnage. Well done here I thought.
The weather effects (smoke, dust filtered light, rain) and lighting seem pretty good.
The qunari looks great.
The character animation is decent... but could use some more polish.
The map room looks good.
The Warden's castle looks... pretty generic though and not particularly realistic. Looks like a miniature playset somehow...
The fireballs and general destruction look "okay", but could use some more "weight" and polishing up I think.
The fade tear looks pretty good and various demons look pretty decent.
The dragon looks good, but it's placement on the rocks looks not-quite-right. It feels like a miniature, much like the castle.
Characters in general feel like they need a little more work and animation tweaks.
After seeing the new Witcher, Ryse, Battlefield, etc. DA:I just seems to lack some of the polish and "wow" the other reveals had.
That said, they've got a whole year+ to work out the kinks so I'm pretty hyped that they'll have great game at the end of the day.

Didn't they say somewhere it was loosely modeled on spaghetti westerns? Even those have stuff in them unless the characters are literally in the middle of the desert. Inside you have strings of chiles hanging on walls, grungy bottles behind the saloon bar, etc. etc. There's a difference between stark detail and no detail.
