Okay, speaking as someone who was very unhappy with the change in the da aesthetic in da2, I gotta say this is a much, much better outing if this truly is in-game footage and not cgi.
I really like how there's a grimier feel to things. I love the way the backgrounds do much more wind animations etc. I was briefly excited be ause I thought the environments were semi destructable in that fireball-city scene but that was snuffed in a re-watch, sadly. The desolation of the battleground aftermath was far more visually interesting and chaotic than the blight scenes in da2. Just really great to see.
I still think the city itself was a bit too empty of detail but that could be just because it's early days yet.
As for the characters shown: they definitely do look....different. But also recognizable to me. And unlike the cameos in DA2, I find myself not hating the differences. In fact, I rather think they're better this time around. Yes, Morrigan looks a bit more... I dunno, matronly? Mature? A bit 'butch'-er, perhaps (though not in a bad way). But dang it she still looks good, and as others have noted, a lot of time has passed. Personally, I think it's awesome to have strong female character who's not a teen/tween supermodel wannabe.
Varric has never been my favorite looking character but now he looks great IMO.
Cassandra looks the least changed to me, but she was one of the better character models in DA2 so maybe that's a good thing.
And the qunari? Wow. Absolutely outstanding.
Frankly, I'm pretty impressed, and I was deeply sceptical after the DA2 redesign and the impression of deep denial from some of the devs that DA2 was anything other than a masterful execution that was simply not understood by us plebian savages. I really was doubting whether I'd be bothering with the next installment.
I'm still reserving judgement on the dorkspawn issue, but the limited glimpses we saw were, perhaps, mildly encouraging? I want to see more to get a better sense as to whether they've ditched the whole campy skeletor vibe, and gone with a more alien-esque one.
In any case, with regards to the look and feel of the series I think I'm going to have to eat some crow and give Bioware credit for a job well done this time around. Mr Laidlaw, you've gotten my attention again. I hope that you can do the same for other aspects of DA2 that were dissappointing for me, such as the removal of player agency in intitiating conversations etc.
Well done Bioware. It's looking good.
