i think we need to step back a few days, considering the fact that, new engine = things look different. Thats one of the biggest hurrdeds of a sequal with an engine change. I mean the look of ME3 in some spots honestly looks horrible, but in general it looks alright. I think the biggest thing will be the lighting.

Honestly, Morri doesn't look half bad (yes she doesn't really look like the DA:O version, but at least she had learned how to put on makeup...

you know... I think all that needs to be tweaked is the hair.... it looks off somehow... I think maybe on the right side drop it down, and maybe decress the pupil buy about... 30% i think but otherwise I think it looks fine, (tho I first saw the video about 12 hours ago, and have come back for a second look)

Personally I prefer to see people’s (and characters) eyes, not their hairdo. Morrigan had such beautiful eyes in DAO, now they are almost invisible. Not a fan of moles either.
Orlesian (?) dress looks nice. 10 years pass, it’s about time she changed her outfit.
So, yes to new Morrigan, but the hairdo.

She looks very good to me. And I doubt she is very old either. Probably 30-35ish if DA:I takes place 10 years or so after DA:O.

I just want to take a moment to thank all the artists of both
2D and 3D persuasions who are making this game a reality. And do you know why?
Because every single character seen he has *flaws* in their appearance.
Cassandra, Varric and the Qunari dude who is so going to be The Iron Bull, have
their scars. They have imperfections in their appearance and I love it. But
mostly I want to thank them for Morrigan. For the moles on her face and
breasts. Oddly, they’re in the same positions as my own. And she’s stunning.
Absolutely stunning and I’m seeing people all over the internet *AGREE* with
that.

I have
hated my moles from childhood, when I’ve been taught to feel inferior because I
don’t have a symmetrical face. When I was younger, I tried to carve them off my
face. I just wanted to fit in.

Thank you for those ‘imperfections’, from the bottom of my heart.

Thank you for reminding me that it’s okay to not be perfect, and that you can still
be beautiful without having a flawless complexion.

I never liked the Origins Morrigan face and changed it as soon as I could. I would say the new face looks more realistic! I'm a bit surprised at the comments on her lips, I think they look quite normal? If anything I found the lips on the Origins version really odd :-/

@OP:
You have your answer: there is no consensus :D

As for the mouth, I found the DAO version unrealistic and have been playing with a modded version for some time, but this new version is too wide. I'm somewhat reminded of the Joker, actually. As I know from my hours spent on character creation and the inability to make a good-looking custom femHawke in DA2 mainly becuase I couldn't reshape the mouths, mouths are incredibly important for a character's appearance and very small changes can make for a marked difference in aesthetic impression.

I'm ok with all the other changes.

How does this look realistic or beautiful? Granted, I took the worst frame I could find for this screenshot, but still. This is not the Morrigan I 'fell in love' with. Her entire lower face is too wide, the tip of her nose is too pointy and downwards, her hair is an emo mess, and her mouth varies between good and 'mumpsy'. Plus, her eyebrows are entirely different.

@Kelgair: Oh, I thought dawn push was some photography term. Consider my deference rescinded!

Dunno, I wasn't "advocating" anything, just trying to put a name to the slight stylized vibe I get out of some of the images. Not just the dawn push scene. I don't think I'm just seeing things.

Though I would be totally cool with cel shaded artwork. Wind Waker was an amazing game and will be even more amazing in HD.

Apparently you need an example where the sun in the background doesn't do sh** for your cel-shaded desires. maybe?

Oh, and next time you're not "advocating something", I suggest you don't post.

Like it almost looks like an oil painting?  Especially when still. I wonder if this is something they're doing on purpose...

Yes, I think that may be it. I'm referring to this shot particularly...

I like the new look, I feel it makes her look more mature and a bit older, as she should.

Haha. I didn't mean it like that!

But I think that her charm was the sexy and polished exterior, and the rotten, or at least grey area interior. She was like a mythical creature, pulling the Grey Warden and his chums into her lair with her charm. But then you sort of notice she's rotten inside. Then, you dig a little and realise there's a person in there.

This new 'rough' or 'realistic' exterior just takes that unique charm away from her in my view. Now she's just an evil and dominant old crone, toying you. Flemeth 2.0.

You saw Morrigan for 10 seconds, narrating and you already think she is evil?
What if she will be the character who will want to fight against this Black Magic or Darkness or whatever it is.

It's the same stuff when people saw Legion in ME2 trailer and they assumed  he was evil. final boss or the fact that Shepard turned into Geth lol.

I don't know what her role will be, but we do know that she's a shady character. Perhaps she'll be some sort of Game of Thrones-like unexpected or tragic hero, or perhaps she'll destroy Flemeth and take over the role as Arch Crone. But my point remains the same, that by making her more 'plain' and realistic, they took away her unique charm.

I like how players continually complain about 'sexualization' in BioWare games (often by making snide implications that anyone who is compelled by physical attractiveness must be a basement dweller or 13 year old boy) and then a thread about a character's appearance gets the most attention on the DA:I page.

I actually like the new Morrigan the more I look at her. There's a distinct Flemeth-look about her, which is very nice since, you know, Morrigan is Flemeths daughter.

Complaining about "sexualization" is acknowledging that appearance matters, so I'm not sure where you're seeing the contradiction.  How the major characters look is quite important.

And 'twas Bioware's choice to end their no new information trailer with their reveal of Morrigan's weird looking smile.

Smiles almost always look freaky in Bioware games, I have to say.  Shouldn't be surprising I guess, since it's hard to fake a genuine smile in real life too.  But it makes it an odd choice for a final shot, to me.  Though possibly it doesn't look so off to people who have grown accustomed to that facial animation system - in my experience almost every games face animation looks a bit off if I haven't played it before, but then I grow accustomed to it and it seems fine, apart perhaps from the occasional really scary or goofy looking smile.

I'm glad she is coming back :) as for the new look... Well I'm trying to remember she has aged and that it's a new engine. Not bad though.

I just watched the EA conferance this morning as saw the Dragon Age III trailer and the reaction from the crowd. When Morrigan began walking forward in the screen, a cheer began to swell up as everyone knew it was Morrigan, but then the cheer completely stops when she starts talking--and you know it was because of how off her facial features were even for a CGI character. I hope they fix this before the game.

I think they did a great job of aging her up. After all, it's been what, eight years since we last saw her?

I really hope there's more info coming at E3 though.  "Here's a shiny trailer that tells you very little.  Oh, and you'll have to wait another year." is a really ****ty thing to leave us with.  I'm fine with a delay to make a better game, but I'd like to get some details already......  (Character creation, gameplay, story details, companions, etc.)  This trailer actually showed less than the Sacred Ashes trailer did.  I know it's "in-engine", but that doesn't necessarily mean much, as a trailer could be made using the game's engine and high quality assets that won't work in the actual game, or with a significant amount of post-processing.  So really there's little difference between CGI and in-engine as far as showing us what the game will look like goes.

I couldn't care less what Morrigan looks like.

But do you think that smile "looked weird" because of the tech?

My interpretation (which could be completely wrong, but still) is that it's just meant to be a really enigmatic smile that's hard to read.

Eg. In another thread, people were saying that the OGB might be the protag. I don't think so but, with that in mind, I watched it again and that smile seemed uncharacteristically warm. Then I watched it again and it seemed a bit predatory. Then I thought maybe she was aloof after all.

I think the facial expression was meant to be enigmatic - but if everyone agreed it was something else, fair enough. I couldn't read it.

Guess not. I'll just follow things up for you.

The idea is that beauty is a good and desirable thing - so long as it's effortless. Because putting effort into it implies you care about physical beauty above other traits. Putting effort into it implies you're trying to use attractiveness as a means to some end. As long as a character is effectlessly beautiful, those accusations have no basis.

I haven't played the Dragon Age games, but for Mass Effect, every female member of the crew is attractive. Sexy. Perfect skin and pretty eyes and shiny hair and full breasts. And that's a good thing. You look at the defunct character forums and they're full of people gushing over their love interest, posting pictures, writing fan fiction. You obviously have a huge interest from the fanbase in romance, and attractiveness plays a massive role in that. You have solid appreciation from the players.

But if you have a developer admit "We wanted so-and-so to be sexy," the reaction is totally different. You have players shrieking accusations of sexism and 'sexualization.' You have people insisting that the sole purpose of making them attractive must have been to attract teenage boys. You get rants that the developer is nothing but a corporate sell-out who sacrificed their characters' integrity for a cheap thrill and cheap profit.
