I think people are forgetting that this game takes place years after DAO. Possibly fifteen or more. People do age.

On a less shallow note...I thought the gameplay Frostbite engine, even at this early stage, looks like it could rival the CGI trailers of the older games, or even better them.  Impressive.  Let's just hope Mike Laidlaw gets his wish and releases higher res textures for PC.

Its hard to judge too much. Is this what their actual in game appearances will be like or is it like other launch trailers where the people in look a lot different than in game? Trailer Hawk was younger and more handsome. The version in game looked older and more harsh. To me anyway.

Also, trailer Morigan and Leliana looked worlds different than their in game appearance. Sten too.

Morigan and Varric look good to me. Older counterparts to when we originally met them with a few slight changes.

Cassandra looks most different to me. Brown hair instead of black, she almost looks like Fem-hawk without the blood smear. She definitely looks less severe than DAII, more personable.

Remember....those were CGI rendered trailers using early concepts.  The Sacred Ashes trailer darkspawn looked nothing like what ended up in game.

This new trailer is Frostbite engine footage.  They may tweak people, sure, but the graphics engine appears to be in place.

I think they all look really good. Morrigan looks a little more "real", at least to me personally, and given that this game is like 15 years after the blight she looks appropriately more milfy. It also seems more in line to sacred ashes than gameplay DAO

I think Cassandra looks freaking miles better than before.

Varric just has a way more detailed jaw although his brow changed a bit but so goes a new engine.

Is it complicated by the fact these are returning characters? Sure. Doesn't change what I said, insofar as "commentary on appearances are highly suspect" goes. Does that mean all opinions are therefore invalid, and anyone who says something negative about a female character is a raging mysoginist? Only on the internet.

I know you're not on the Mass Effect team, but as long as there are returning female characters in Bioware games that get nonsensical redesigns with no other reason than to make them "more sexy" excuse me if I can't take your comments on this too seriously. And please less gorram dismissve generalizing, this stuff gets really tiring after a while.

Sorry for being a little bitter, but I'd really wish the devs talking to us on the BSN would somehow find a way to actually talk to and address the reasonable users/fans first and foremost, and not fire their snark canons at everyone at the first sighting of someone naughty. Which are and always will be there, and not too few, no doubt about that. But why insist on giving them all the attention?

Damn, I was as close to being excited about DA:I as never before, but reading through this thread was enough to kinda ruin my mood again...

On topic:

I like Varric the best. Morrigan, imho, might need some tweaking in some areas to make her appearance even closer to being an older version of herself, and although I didn't even recognize Cassandra I can totally live with her look. There are really some jaw related things going on with Morrigan and Cass that are mildy irritating.

Gasp, I commented on the apperance of female characters! Sound the mysoginist alarm!! Image IPB

Varric looks a little strange to my eye, almost plastic-y. Maybe he's a cylon.

Cassandra and Morrigan are fantastic. Really positive updates, in my opinion. Cassandra's jawline in particular is rad as all hell.

:thumbs up to the Art department:

I don't think her hair is brown but just the lighting in that shot makes it look that way. Red/orange lighting on black could tint it to look brown

Maybe not, but I imagine it would be pretty hard to play with colour coded stick figures.

Yes but that argument is irrelevant in this situation considering people are getting mad over slightly wider jaws

I don't think (most) people are getting mad at such. I think those that are getting annoyed are annoyed at how people are treating them in this thread both from developers and other fans which was atleast the case for me earlier. It may be a slight issue for many but the annoyance has more to do with the claims of misogyny or ****** to characters and other such accusations thrown at them by those who do not feel the same way about those slight issues.

I knew that was Varric and Morrigan when I first saw them.

Had to come to the forums to learn that was Cassandra. (I don't like her...)

I'm just glad they don't look cartoony.

And, I like the dress. :-D

And Varric's chest is covered. Which is appropriate...seeing as this time everything is serious business!

Hmm, I assume talking to me and the other person?

He started with sarcasm which was not serious (I assume), I replied with joke again not was not being serious, he asked a serious comment of which I gave a serious answer. So in answer to your comment it's 50/50. Though serious is not a negative thing, it's what in general normal discussions are.

Not mad at you aolbain. Ticked off at a couple of others. I've made my point anyway.
Ultimately we all want the same thing. For the game to be a success. For Gaider to smile and blow kisses at the fans. LMAO. And to be told work on DA4 has started.

I hope work on DA4 has not started, I desire full and complete focus on the this one until it's released.

Varric blew me away when I first saw the trailer. To me, he's a damn near perfect transition. I really like Morrigan's look. It took some getting used to, but I think it suits her more than even her DAO look (which I also liked) because it looks more unique. That said, I have a pet hate for hairstyles that completely cover one eye. It's a nitpick I wouldn't even bother mentioning if my opinion had any weight but I keep wanting to lift her fringe or tuck it behind her ear or something lol.

As for Cassandra, I admit that something didn't quite look right to me with the positioning of her eyes? Something about the eyes? It's probably just the camera angle, but it looked like they were lopsided on her face? Other than that, I thought she looked great. And, even better, that she looked 'exotic' - like she's from somewhere we haven't yet seen (i.e. she doesn't resemble every other npc we've seen in facial structure or even skin tone) which makes sense, given that she's Nevarran. I didn't get this feeling from her DA2 look because she kinda just looked like one of my Hawkes. I'd call it an improvement.

tl;dr: Overall, I was impressed with all of their appearances!

I like the new looks. Especially the progression they've all seem to gone through. One thing I don't like are the eyes. I had a major pet peeve with how the pupil's in Mass Effect 3 looked, and they looked the same in the trailer. It's totally a minor issue, but that one little thing will make it hard to look at them seriously.

I also don't really like how cartoonish they look. But, then again, in most of the DA trailer the chars looked extremely different in-game. I just hope they do something about the eyes. Major drawback for me.

Btw, since that's real gameplay footage in the trailer the lighting is amazing! Absolutely stoked. Sad that it has to come out in Fall 2014.. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with my life until then.

I love that they are going off of DA:O with bringing Morrigan's back with the Arch Demon child from origins from our Grey Warden toon. They are bringing back the feel of game i fell in love with and played over and over again for 2 yrs and not the crappy DA2 which was rushed in my view bc of money hungry EA. :P

I think Morrigan looks fine. The jawline and lips could use some tweaking, but if they don't change it, I could live with that, since it still looks like her.

With Varric, the only reason I knew it was him was because I recognized Bianca. I eventually saw the resemblance, but it feels more like Varric's younger cousin or something.

Cassandra looks like she was hit in the face with a baseball bat, but looking at the picture, she's messed up from battle and there may be some lighting issues, so it's hard to get a good idea of the real facial structure. I reserve judgement until we getter better pics.

But do see what varric is covering his chest with? It looks like the scarf that is on the Champion Armor for Hawk.

Morrigan looks essentially the same; aside from the dress, her face simply seems updated for the new engine. Varric looks better to me, with the scarf adding a look of seriousness. And Cassandra seemed a little too different; I liked her DAII model more.

Morrigan: Gained more jawline and a curve to her previously straight eyebrow. Neither are huge changes, she still looks like Morrigan.

Varric: Lost a lot of forehead and a bit of jaw & chin. Needs his high forehead back, but he still looks like Varric. Maybe dwarves grow more hair as they age instead of less, so his high hairline is proceeding instead of receeding?

Cassandra: Seems to have suffered from many, but mostly minor, tweaks. Gained a bit more jaw, a bit more of an eyebrow curve, and had a tweak to her eyes, amongst others. Still looks enough like Cassandra to me, though, that I can shrug it off.

Yeah, my only major 'deal' is that Varric lost his high forehead. I'm so happy to see him, though, that I'm not going to make an issue out of it. Engine changes cause changes.

My opinion? YAY, see you three Fall of next year!

I found all three characters to be recognizable, though Cassandra was more from context than pure visual cues. I'm kinda on the fence about their looks, but that has more to do with the art direction than quibbles about lip sizes and moles. I'm sure it'll look fine once I've divorced DAO and DA2 art from my concept of Thedas.

That said, the one thing that has bothered me about the character designs since DAO has been neck thickness. Necks have just seemed...off in proportion to the heads to which they are attached. *shrug*
