The crazy summoning from FFVIII, XIII, returns! Pretty neat... although I hope they give an option to shorten the timer at times as well...

The game tells you why. Barthandelus tells you why. You should play it again.

 

They did it because humans began warring with one another. Initially, the Maker created human and Fal'Cie, brothers. But the Maker left and humans began to war with another and turned the world(s) into a h*llhole. The Fal'Cie believed that the Maker would set things right.

 

Edit, from Chapter 10:

 

"Cid: The entity responsible for creating both humans and fal’Cie. Long ago, the Maker departed the world, leaving the two races behind. In a sense, human and fal'Cie are brothers--orphaned by the same parent. As for the humans, they forgot the order imposed by the Maker. They began to war among themselves for the first time in history. The fal'Cie focused on recalling their lost deity, and returning the world to its former glory. This purpose lies in the heart of all their actions. Calling back the Maker requires a fitting sacrifice."

 

He Barthandelus (and Orphan, in their combined form) also state their agency: they don't have it. They can't kill humans, the Maker didn't give them that ability. The only power they have is the ability to make humans L'Cie.

 

"Have you ever paused to consider our reason for making l'Cie of men? We fal'Cie are crafted for a single purpose and granted finite power to that end. With men it is not so. Men dream, aspire, and through indomitable force of will achieve the impossible. Your power is beyond measure."

 

Some of that is from the datalog, but you can easily get the gist from the cutscenes.

 

Jihl is literally the only villain in XIII who is "irredeemably evil."

 

That's incredibly lazy justification, though, which was my point. What you said is a lot of nouns, but is the general concept of "humans suck, let's sacrifice to God and everything will be fixed!", which is a tired and boring cliche.

 

Also, RIP.

 

Also also, I notice the Zero avatar you have there, Kefka. Waited 9 years for the sequel to Drakengard 2, and man, I was not disappointed.
