Well - I hope Thedosian mercantilism revolves around killing things for bags of gold.

Heroes are equally ill equipped to be normal people.

@Rebel Wolf: And what does your mage shut in know about the Thedosian economy?

Sure, he's probably seen a map of whatever country his Circle was in - but he's never been out of his tower.

Mages are laughably ill equipped to be productive citizens.

You did play the games right?
Hawke is an apostate,my dalish warden is as well.
My amell warden has been out of the tower for long enought to get how things work.
They could earn enough from killing bandits to open a nice store.

This isn't your warden, this is the average squishy mage who doesn't know anything about the real world

Hey now. I am sure my Amell turned out to be pretty normal....oh, who am I kidding? Normal is boring!

A normal mage could be a healer or shopkeeper.

@eluvianix: There's nothing wrong with an honest days work, good friends and family, a home and health.

@RebelWolf: And what does your shopekeeper sell?

Just what thedas needed, a boom of magic mercenaries killing everything in sight and then completely over-saturating the economy.

If we could get a slice of that normal life for a few seconds in DAI, I will sing Bioware's praises.

Outside of healing and mercenary work a lot of mage talents are really limited and highly specialized. Magics not going to help them be better merchants, farmers, etc, unless they decide to use blood magic and cheat.

And I really doubt a lot of them would do that unless times got tough and they needed the money, in which case we're back to square one.

@Rebel Wolf: LOL nice - the last one would probably be the most lucrative.

The other two - I'm not sure you're familiar with how a business functions. Where did you get your start up capital? All those Templars and non-mage families you butchered during your rebellion?

I own my own business you silly thing,so yes I am.
And are you making things up again?
Why would we butcher non mage families?
There are endless ways to start a business or just work for someone.
Mages could do any job a normal person could.

That arse wont be tight for long if they sell it too much tbh.

And I don't think sloppy floppy bottoms are really that high in demand.

Normal people don't earn enough money to become merchants while still keeping up with their living expenses. They usually get luck and find a way to make some coin quickly, or they inherit the money. There is also apprenticing and rising up the ranks to overthrow the original owner of the business, while learning all their secrets, but that usually takes years so it's not a immediate revenue stream.

Fair enough, but I think they could tend a shop for someone else or if they are adept at healing they could do that.
Enough money for food, shelter and clothes.
So they might not be rich but it's a living like anyone else.
Nice productive people.

Wouldn't a mage using their powers as a healer attract templars.

I thought we were talking about what mages would do if they were legally free?

I think all of our examples are assuming this mage rebellion works out and mages get their "equality".  In other news, health care cost in Thedas plummets to record levels after huge surge of healing mages compete with each other for business!  More at 7.

Thousands of lives saved because of helpful mages, the Thedas declares every Saturday mage appreciation day!
It won't be like Because most of those mages don't want to be magisters.
