Unknown/Unknown or get out

This. Unless the lobby is set to anything/Geth. Then turn off designated gaming device, and burn the disk.

lol, I always set map and enemy. I can definitely play U/U I just usually don't care to.

You can handicap your lobby by picking an opponent at times. Some people perhaps have chosen a class they want to play that just does not sync with your choice, they might very well leave rather than change classes.

I mostly play "Unknown" because I like the surprise.  Yes, knowing the enemy type does give you a little bit of an advantage (especially knowing whether you're going to be facing Phantoms or not), but I don't feel like I need the advantage.  Although if I knew I was playing with a marginal group and couldn't leave the lobby for some reason, maybe I would set the enemy type specifically.

EDIT:  I don't play Platinum, but if I did, I would probably set the enemy type there too.  I would feel like I need the advantage on Platinum.

I'm with the OP.

I like to play specific kits with specific factions.

Cerberus - AV, AIU or DV

Geth - TGI Sniper

Reaper - TGI Typhoon or HS

Collectors - (same as Reaper) but I hate Collectors so not very often.

So I'm a scrub then? Deal with it:bandit:

Too easy to pick a kit and loadout when you know what's coming. I like it when the game yells "Surprise, mother****er!"

Everyone on here has good points.

Various kits do better or worse against certain enemies, so I can totally understand wanting to play to your strengths (otherwise it can get frustrating and you can feel as though you've under-performed even though the odds weren't originally in your favour) - although you may deliberately like to play something difficult for whatever kit you're using in order to challenge yourself.

I just go with unknown enemies all the time unless I've played, say, Reapers three times in a row and I'm fed-up with them. I also do unknown map all the time unless I'm trying to finish off map mastery.

When I go Platinum, I prefer to know what map I'm going on (because there's more strategy involved) whereas I don't really care about the enemies (since they're all mixed, they're all quite similar - apart from Collectors which has four enemy types rather than three Image IPB).

What is this madness?!

Unknown/Unknown keeps it interesting. Though sometimes when playing with friends you might want a sniper friendly map, and sometimes you want to make it as hard as possible. I would also forgive picking an easy map/enemy combination for Platinum if you are playing with 3 randoms with low level weapons and no equipment. Selected map and/or enemy for Gold? That is just weird.

Exactly! The reactions I get from players when I secretly switch from Cerberus/Gold to Unknown/Unknown/Platinum without them noticing is priceless!

Players rushing to the first spawn of "Cerberus" expecting Assault Troopers and Centurions just to be greeted by a gang of Scions and Praetorians. Love it!

Unknown.

Just not as exciting unless my PS3 has the risk of dying with my character.

If I see a selected faction in a lobby and I am playing a kit that I dont like against that faction then I go "nope." Get into a random game and I get that faction, then I just go "lets get it over with."

Depending on the kit if I know the faction then I can tailor my consumables differently and that can give me a notable advantage. Going warp rounds for collectors for instance can make pretorians drop much faster as both their barrier and armor drop far faster than had I went with AP or incendiary ammo. Disruptor ammo can keep geth on lockdown.

Unless I'm trying to get credits at the shortest amount of time possible, I play U/U/GorP

I select map on Plat to avoid getting stuck with Condor or London and will select enemies if the last few matches have not been so random, but otherwise I prefer the surprise.

I used to play U/U all the time until Retaliation blighted us PS3'ers with the Collectors. Now I normally select an enemy because I got tired of my console freezing.
If there was an option to select 'any enemy except Collectors' I'd pick that instead.

Eventually you will not need this additional advantage. The only time we might chose a map is when someone is closing in on map mastery again. I really can't remember the last time we chose an enemy.
