Mass Effect the better game?

Having dabbled with all these games, Mass Effect feels like the superior of the lot, including Dragon Age Origins. Gameplay feels so much better and the pacing is way better (though if they could shorten the damn elevator rides a tad).
DAO just feels clumsy compared to Mass Effect.

There are not any aspects of Dragon Age that 'kill it' for me, thus I could say that in my opinion, Dragon Age is the better. However, your question is an interesting one, not easily answered.

The elevator rides were one of the reasons I gave up on the game. Not the main one, but they didn't help.
I didn't like the gameplay, I didn't like half the characters.
So I guess its completly subjective which one is the better game

Ugh, I hated the rover parts and driving around looking for minerals. I hope that part is streamlined in ME2.
I like DA much, much more than ME. I was never able to connect with any of the characters in ME really - I just didn't find them particularly interesting.

I've been a big fan since baldurs gate, nwn, etc, etc.. took a big hiatus to play the slew of MMOs, mainly the likes of Lineage 2 and WoW. Just got back into the saddle with Jade Empire, KOTOR, Mass Effect, etc, etd (courtesy of Steam X'mas Sale).

I have to completely disagree. Mass Effect has a brilliant story, deep characters, tons of plot, I love the codex & universe they built, the graphics but the gameplay is just completely 100% broken in my eyes. I've never even finished it myself, I had to watch my friend play through b/c 8 hours was the most I could bare to suffer through
Please all ME fans do not start bashing me like children. lol. Doubtful! My first experience was on the 360 7 it was awful. The user interface, combat system, animations, squad control or lack of were all terrible. I loved the character screen for building your chars stats but the rest felt completely broken. The gameplay is slow, dull, not rewarding at all. I felt like the controls didn't match the UI & there was nothing to feel accomplished about at all. I switched to PC & played a lot longer, enjoyed a lot more which isn't saying much at all. Sorry guys but I simply did not enjoythe combat system. It was not well designed, slow, & just not rewarding at all. I didn't feel like I had powers or I was firing a powerful weapon.
Do NOT get me wrong the characters are story were one of the best I've ever experienced but it is all opinion & personal preference. Bioware did a fantastic job just to keep me interested for 8 short hours. Aside from AVP, Starcraft, Halo, & Gears I do not like the future space marine setting especially in comparison to anything medieval. I personally prefer that setting with melee combat but that is not my main reasoning for my distaste with ME just the combat simple as that..it was far too boring & not rewarding at all.
I'm truly sorry for some of you hardcore fans if that was hard to read without getting upset or defensive of your favorite game but know I do not deny it is not a truly great game for many people. Story, graphics, characters all count for a lot in the gaming world but if the the UI & gameplay mechanics feel broken you will not retain interest it has to be a fair balance.
Example Assassin's Creed 1 & 2 both had fun yet repetitive gameplay mechanics which worked for the majority of us. It didn't get old too quickly b/c it was just fun to play but the story was just god awful. lol. The characters were decent above average but barely. So end result a playable game!
No one should tkae great offense though, just my opinion & everyone has their own favorites.

they were generally short enough for me. And i also personally think the mass effect's atmosphere was better than dao. One big plus was that shephard had voice overs which greatly improved the level joy that player gets from dialogues. It was a very large letdown for me to see the warden does not speak.(i can't blame tho.)
-----------> spoilers follow for both me and dao
Any way, mass effect and dao is very smiliar if you look at the whole plot of main story.
you see, there is that horde of enemies that are hivemind and they think better when their count is bigger.(geth & darkspawn) They are caused by one of the races/nations and that nation is driven exile(Quarians & Mages+Circle of magi). Some trusted person betrays their people/you.(Loghain & Saren) Then you are accepted in to the individuals that are not trained but chosen because of their ability(Spectre & grey warden). Everyone respects you because of this title. etc etc
---> end of spoiler
My personal preference in the end, is that mass effect was a better game.

i understand that this is your opinion but i feel the exact opposite for the both games. I perefer the mass effect's combat system over dragon age's in terms of being slow. DA:O s combat is much much slower imo. And again just as oppoiste as you said, it did not felt like i am making powerfull blows or something in dao but it did in ME. One great thing adout dao's combat tho; the deathblows are great and indeed pleasure to watch & rearding.
I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Dragon Age is a great game but there have been some things I didn't like. For example the cities and villages. Denerim never felt like the capitol it is, it was empty. Lothering was... strange. The quests were not implemented very well. I explored the whole area - which isn't too big. After that I got the quests and suddenly there was this ambushed woman lying around where there was none before... bears attacked where there were none before and due to the nature of the area being surrounded by water it didn't make sense for them to appear suddenly.
Even Redcliff had a strange layout for a town... the inn even wasn't connected to the rest with a path - I nearly missed it...
Other aspects like the landmeeting, the quest for the urn or Orzammar on the other hand were great.
Mass Effect was one thrill from beginning to end without glitches similor to those of Dragon Age.

I'll agree Dragon Age feels sloppy with a number of game play related issues. It just doesn't have the tightness that Mass Effect has. And it's VERY buggy.
BUT it has a longer story (arguably better), far more replayibilty, VAST replayibilty concerning mods and pricey but DLC that doesn't suck.
Long story short, oddly, the two seem to have contrasting strengths and weaknesses, and it all comes down to what strengths a person expects in a game.

I just wish that Bioware can combine the two gamestyle in to a new genre and be the first one in years that break the trend that every game is just the same thing only in new engines.
That would be awesome.

Deespite Dragon Age being a competent effort from an experienced rpg developer,it's too uninspired and derivative imo.I did enjoy the dialogues,combats/tactics and party chats, but the world left me cold as ice.
The banality of the DA:O universe and the module based areas are my biggest disappointment.I can easily accept that a game like Mass effect doesn't have an open world since you travel from planets to planets and it's better to just focus on story related areas(since it's too expensive and time consuming to flesh out 20+ planets with open area and interesting landmarks). For a fantasy rpg however,I would gladly prefer open areas where you can venture in the wilds and explore.

Or could I simply sit down, play Dragon Age, admit it's one hell of a game, enjoy it a few hours and go back to Mass Effect? I think I'll go with that. As soon as I've unlocked the remaining classes in Dragon Age. Gotta get that last playthrough of Mass Effect before Mass Effect 2 is out, then finish that game before the expansion for Dragon Age is out. By the time I finish it, the first DLC for Mass Effect 2 might be out. Where does it end!

While I agree with most of your post, it was pretty quick to explore all of ME. And the main story was very short.
DA:O has more content and variations based on your particular party members.
I look for ME2 to be much more in depth and I agree ME2 was a better story, but mainly due to fantasy being so Tolkien"esque" and overdone while space feels newer and fresher; and in many ways less explored as a genre.

I have tried several times to get past Redcliffe in DA:O and never did it. I've been through Mass Effect twice so far. That should have been my answer, but I got past Redcliffe yesterday. That's my answer.

Secondly itemization/gear/shopping was pointless in ME, the first time I played through ME I only once changed one item for a character(a better weapon for my Shepppard). And I was playing on default difficult, I think it's normal setting. Any game that is supposed to be RPG should have a useful item system imo.
