I have tried sevral times to get thru Mass Effect and never did it.
I have played thru DAO twice and then some more.
Thats my answer.

This.

I got ME for Christmas, just after I finished my first playthrough with DAO. I played it for fifteen hours or so, then I felt the urge to start a second playthrough with DAO. ME has a nice universe, and a good script, but I liked only two characters (Garrus and Tali), and, overall, it didn't felt to me like a real RPG, which, on the long haul, diminished my interest in it. I still intend to finish ME, sure, and I'll probably buy the second one, but DAO is superior in every respect for me: story, characters, writing, atmosphere, gameplay, combat (I loathe the awkward ME interface).

As for now, if I had to rank BioWare's (new generation) games, I'd say:

1. Dragon Age
2. Jade Empire
3. Knights of the Old Republic

While I agree with most of your post, it was pretty quick to explore of ME. And the main story was very short.
DA:O has more content and variations based on your particular party members.
I look for ME2 to be much more in depth and I agree ME2 was a better story, but mainly due to fantasy being so Tolkien"esque" and overdone while space feels newer and fresher; and in many ways less explored as a genre.

Mass effect feel fresher because it is. :P Your character is fully voiced and this change how you roleplay. In Mass effect 2,we will finally have the interupt system which can change the course of a conversation. :D  The potential in combat is nearly unlimited, since there's so many direction you can go in.Combat in Mass effect 2 will simply blow Dragon Age out of the water. Also love the cinematic storytelling and the awesome soundtrack.Even if the first game was sterile(bland art style and most areas felt desolated or empty),I still prefer the overall look of Mass effect to Dragon Age( I like the look of the aliens and the "science" behind the world). It's just more inspired than Dragon Age in any shape or form.

It's true that science-fiction rpgs are rare and thus they automatically fresher, but it's also harder to pull off(hence why they are rare :P).Bioware is now perfectly at ease with doing a sci-fi rpg and I am sure we will be seeing more of them in the future(Obsidian was trying to do one with the alien rpg,but they might be able to develop their own sci-fi franchise if Alpha protocol does well).

I liked both, and couldn't say if I'm more exited about ME2 or Awakening.

There are good and not so good things about both games, for example the side quests in Mass Effect are quite dull, and driving around in the Mako is horrible.

However, this is no competition between two great games - I'd recommend both anytime :)

Almost exactly the way I feel (although I actually enjoyed driving the Mako). I love the Mass Effect universe just as I love the Dragon Age world. Both are great games that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone (assuming they like the genre). I'm highly looking forward to both ME2 and DA:Awakenings. I know I got  - and will continue to get - more than my money's worth from both franchises.

I like Mass Effect a lot and I am really looking forward to the sequel but for me it did not quite live up to expectations. I would rank it below Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

As a person who's been playing Bioware's games since Baldur's Gate, I can safely say that with each new game that comes out, the bar is raised just a little bit higher. When ME came out, I was totally floored. It was head and shoulder's above anything that had ever been done before. Then when I found out about DA:O coming out, I was wondering how they would top ME. When it finally came out and I got a chance to play it, well, truthfully, I was underwhelmed at first. It wasn't the setting or the story or anything that I could put my finger on at first. Eventually I realized that it was the animations themselves that were bothering me. The people just didn't move right. Especially the women. Once I had identified my problem I was able to see past it and see how good this game actually is, I was able to enjoy it much more than I had previously. So after all this rambling, I think I still prefer ME to DA:O, but only slightly.

PS: I sorely miss open world exploration, to the point where I would tolerate a multi disc game just to play a game like ME or DA:O in an open world environment.

I'm a huge fan of most Bioware games, let get that out first. That said I found that I prefer the Mass Effect story and plotline. DA:O felt too black and gray. Every choice is either or, no middle ground at all. You pick either Mages or Templars and Werewolves or Elves, this noble or that one. At times you are forced to make a choice between two morally wrong decisions. Since this isn't in the spoilers forum I won't get into detail but at least one of those should have had a third option.

It's been a few months since I was working on my last ME replay and I'm planning on going back to it after the games today. The story didn't have as many this or that choices and it felt like the ones you had to make were entirely player choices and not forced decisions. The worst thing about ME was the damn driving all over the place, especially some of the more rugged terrain. I'm at the point now where I've created a list of hand written travel paths for quick resolution of the planets where the travel was worst. Other than that the story and cut scenes were amazing.

All in all, both ME and DA:O will give me plenty of play through opportunities but the ME universe has me hooked more than DA:O because I dislike binary decision sets where both choices feel wrong. <shrug> That's just me though.

I much preferred Dragon Age Origins because it has damage text.
Mass Effect don't, which means it kinda sucks. RPG with no damage text = No respect for me.
Still, Dragon Age Origins is too hard for me at the end. I even set the difficulty to Casual, still hard.
Same for Mass Effect. Still, I liked Dragon Age Origins better.

I played Dragon Age first. Initially, it was a very good experience. Interesting story, nice setting, and the characters/NPCs in particular were incredibly well done (if it weren't for the characters, I couldn't see myself playing the game very long).

Having never played Mass Effect before and hearing rave reviews about it for years, I bought it off steam for 5 bucks. Right from the beginning, the game was fantastic. I even found those little rover missions interesting at first, as it was all about exploring strange new planets out in the middle of nowhere. There was always a bit of mystery, and a sense of the unknown. For me, Mass Effect is the better game in terms of story, setting, gameplay, graphics, sound, and music. The only area where Dragon Age pulls ahead is in the characters. In Mass Effect, the characters were very well done, but not nearly as thoroughly developed as in Dragon Age.

Frankly, as I grow older, the fantasy setting feels more and more "cheesy" to me, for lack of a better word (the ending portion relating to Ciridin's Cross/Paragon of her kind almost made me quit the game outright...it was just cringeworthy). When I was younger, retreating into fantasy novels and crpgs like Baldurs' Gate/icewind dale/morrowind held great appeal. Nowadays, the only old games I dust off from time to time are Fallout 1-2 and X-com.

A game like Mass Effect feels more plausible, seems more "authentic", and has a lot more appeal for someone like me. But then again, the setting has a lot to do with this. Some people like to roleplay in a fantasy universe, while others prefer science fiction.

I prefer DA:O much more than ME, but comparing it to ME2 will be a much fairer competition (and not long to wait). ME was a good game for a single run, but I really struggled continuing in my second game and ended up moving on to other things (an attempt to return to ME last summer failed due to technical issues with the install and I couldn't be bothered trying to troubleshoot it). The problem with ME was that everything other than the main plot and characters was so dull, especially planetary exploration. For someone who likes exploring, that killed it. Besides, I'm not one who enjoys "shooter" style games, so combat was a mixed bag. Hopefully ME2 will be switched up enough to make a big difference.

DA:O, on the other hand, has eaten up 231 hours since it's release (compared to ME's 74 total) and I've started a fourth run through it. That sort of replayability is something I love in games, especially when they are all round enjoyable in the first place.

I still rank Mass Effect 1 as my favorite RPG of all time!

I was hoping ME2 would take over that spot fixing the few error ME1 had but sadly it appears Mass Effect 2 has gone a different, non RPG way, diminishing the value of the product before it ever ships.

Anyways, its all personal opinion. I like Mass Effect 1 more because its was darker, more adult, had a grittier feel to the world. When you made love you didnt wear granny panties (amazes me how much that bothers me).

DA:O was the best Fantasy setting RPG I ever played but Mass Effect 1 is the best RPG period for my money.

My top 10 list:

1) Mass Effect
2) Dragon Age Origins
3) Knights of the Old Republic 2
4) Knights of the Old Republic 1
5) Jade Empire
6-10) SSI Gold Box AD&D Games

I was hoping ME2 would take over #1 or #2 spot, now im hoping it even appears on my top 10 list at all. Honestly cant say if ill even buy #3 at this point in time and you really cant understand how big a let down that is cause I LOVE this universe and story but I dont play mindless shooters like Halo and other crap! Bioware, your above such nonsence!

You forget that ME is an RPG/shooter, whereas DA:O is the purer RPG. In terms of character interaction, personalities and being presented with difficult choices, I prefer DA:O. I've also played DA:O more times than ME. I forced myself through another ME playthrough recently in an attempt to hit 60, but I only reached 59 - meh. I can't do it again (and the only reason I played ME more than twice was because I lost my old saves, bleah). DA:O I still enjoy and am pretty much intent upon going through all the origins eventually (on my fourth playthrough atm).

You are right there.

I played ME multiple times but always with a new character

When I tried to replay with a old character to get to 60, couldnt do it.
The shooter mechanics of original ME just made replay with same character unplayable (going to be 100000 times worse now in ME2).

Its got replay but only with new character and doing new options and such, when thats all finished, so is game IMO.

so i assume you would prefer shooter than RTS games? the combat in ME is alot like a third person shooter like Gears of War, and ME2 is even more so if you have seen those demos.

I actually just purchased Mass Effect to give it a try based on how much I enjoy Dragon Age.

Granted, I have only begun to play it, but so far the two games seem to play completely differently. I don't think that Mass Effect is bad, but the difference is pretty profound. I find myself much preferring the more relaxed playstyle of Dragon Age.

Oh I have a hard time deciding which one I love more. I'm a big fan of both Fantasy and Sci-Fi, Star Wars being a bit of both, Bioshock being an amazing Sci-Fi adventure, and Dragon Age being an epic fantasy tale. Not to mention they were all so well made, especially for the PC (grumbles about my PC not being good enough to play it) which is where all the best games are anyways.

Umm, if I have to choose I'll give Mass Effect the edge on gameplay, since it was a solid shooter/RPG, while I give Dragon Age the edge on overall enjoyment. I guess what I'm really saying is that they're both absolutely awesome.

To me, Mass Effect felt so controlled, constrained, claustrophobic, and linear...
Oh yeah I forgot, I got to make a big decision towards the end. DAO was so much better the comparison is unfair.
Sure it was pretty but try to sell a console blockbuster that isn't. You won't.

I will say though, they did an AMAZING job with the PC/Console porting and the interfaces.

I've been a big fan since baldurs gate, nwn, etc, etc.. took a big hiatus to play the slew of MMOs, mainly the likes of Lineage 2 and WoW. Just got back into the saddle with Jade Empire, KOTOR, Mass Effect, etc, etd (courtesy of Steam X'mas Sale).

Having dabbled with all these games, Mass Effect feels like the superior of the lot, including Dragon Age Origins. Gameplay feels so much better and the pacing is way better (though if they could shorten the damn elevator rides a tad).

DAO just feels clumsy compared to Mass Effect.

I dont know. I think ME and DAO have more in common than at first seems the case. Both are story-led with a fair amount of cut-scenes with a focus on role-playing choices. If anything, DAO's choices are more complex and change outcomes in a far greater way than does ME. DAO is also a much larger game, and its side-quests are more varied than the "unchartered worlds" side-quests in ME.

But ME is much more of a non-traditional rpg compared to DAO, which is more like a new generation Baldurs Gate.

Anyways i like them both about the same.

Personally, I tried Mass Effect and don't like it at all.

It's a FPS - a pretty one with awesome cutscenes, dialogues, and graphics, but still it's an FPS. And I don't like FPS games. I wish there was a "skip all fighting" cheat, and I'd use it and like what was left of the game.

So it's a personal taste thing, I say. And personally, Dragon Age wins.

I'll hold my judgement until Mass Effect 2. Either way, Dragon Age stands on its own in that it shows Bioware can still make quality story-driven fantasy RPG's that match the old days of Baldurs Gate II and still sell them, even to a bigger audience. I imagine by now, or soon, it will have sold more than BG2 ever did, which is good!

See, I didn't much care for DA:O. I had a blast at the beginning but about 30 hours in both of my characters I just got SO bored. I thought the combat was dull and rather unexciting. I did like managing my party to my like though. I didn't care for any of the characters. And the fade parts...oh god the Fade. I also didn't care for the story, it might have been longer but certainly not better. Mass Effect just has a special place as one of my favorite games and probably one of my favorite stories. I love the RPG and Shooter hybrid, I play both RPG and shooters...having it mixed is awesome. I will be giving DAO a go on my PC a try after i'm done with Mass Effect 2 though and when it goes down in price or if I find it on sale. I can't bring myself to spend 50 bucks on it again.

I liked both games very much. DA:O gave me goose bumps in some story driven elements and I love swords & sorcery. ME gave me my shooter fix while still being an RPG at heart. Fortunately, I don't *have* to choose between the two. I played an equal amount of hours on both, I think. Close to 100 hours each (multiple playthroughs), which means both gave me my moneys worth and then some. That's all that matters, really. Hope I can find the time for ME2 oO
