Mass Effect the better game?

Also, it did feel like shopping was sorta pointless like mawdudi said. I pretty much just geared up from drops with occasional shopping, but I sold the rest and then bought the specter weapons when they were unlocked and after that it was pretty much just getting better armor and upgrades as I went along.

ME had more annoying factors and flaws than DAO, so DAO wins hands down. Like people have already said elevator rides and mako side quests quests got very very annoying after awhile.
Secondly itemization/gear/shopping was pointless in ME, the first time I played through ME I only once changed one item for a character(a better weapon for my Shepppard). And I was playing on default difficult, I think it's normal setting. Any game that is supposed to be RPG should have a useful item system imo.
I gotta disagree with this one... I'm still in favor of Dragon Age (although I LOVE both games), but Dragon Age defenitly had more flaws and annoyances. Just the bugs alone... many of which aren't fixed...
Of course this is totally balanced out by being incredibly custimizable and being far longer.
I will agree that ME side quests SUCKED, although I was sadlys urprised to see Dragon Age didn't have great side quests, most just kinda mah. Baldur's Gate 2 still holds awards for most complicated, lengthy, and entertaining side quests!
PS- I kinda don't beleave your second comment there. Mass Effect was no easy game on normal/hard. Infact it could be pretty damn tough. I find it hard to beleave you got by with only ONCE switching a weapon.

In Mass Effect you're just Shepard, and you can be nice or mean to people.

I really enjoy both games but ME for me is the better game. Primarily because the PC character is VOICED. I like it when my character actually has a voice and there for a personality. the whole mute thing is incredibly old and very boring(*cough* Gordan Freeman in Halflife*cough*). And to me, makes the character seem hallow. DAO would be amazing if there was an option to give your character a voice so they actually spoke in conversations... rather then conversations that go pretty much like this...
Sadly pulling this off would be one hell of a challenge. In mass effect it was doable because Shepard was more or less a founded character with a SINGLE voice. You pretty much could be friendly shepard or bad cop shepard. There was not nearly as much PC dialog flexibilty and choice as in DA:O.
After ME I was spoiled and going back to a non-speaking PC was kinda jarring, but it just can't be done in DA:O, although I wish it could be VERY much!
Like BG2, my Dragon Age character I could care less about, he was merely the means to gather all the intresting companions together... now THEM I care about and emotionally invest in.

I still rank Mass Effect 1 as my favorite RPG of all time!
I was hoping ME2 would take over that spot fixing the few error ME1 had but sadly it appears Mass Effect 2 has gone a different, non RPG way, diminishing the value of the product before it ever ships.
Anyways, its all personal opinion. I like Mass Effect 1 more because its was darker, more adult, had a grittier feel to the world. When you made love you didnt wear granny panties (amazes me how much that bothers me).
DA:O was the best Fantasy setting RPG I ever played but Mass Effect 1 is the best RPG period for my money.
My top 10 list:
1) Mass Effect
2) Dragon Age Origins
3) Knights of the Old Republic 2
4) Knights of the Old Republic 1
5) Jade Empire
6-10) SSI Gold Box AD&D Games
I was hoping ME2 would take over #1 or #2 spot, now im hoping it even appears on my top 10 list at all. Honestly cant say if ill even buy #3 at this point in time and you really cant understand how big a let down that is cause I LOVE this universe and story but I dont play mindless shooters like Halo and other crap! Bioware, your above such nonsence!
Have you played The Witcher?

I like Mass Effect a lot and I am really looking forward to the sequel but for me it did not quite live up to expectations. I would rank it below Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age: Origins and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.
I would put The Witcher and Vampire: The Masquerade neck in neck and in some ways ahead of ME and DA:O.
As I have said in other posts Bioware feels a little Disney and colorful to me, which can ruin the immersion.
Even ugly is pretty in Bioware games.
The Witcher was so gritty, and though not the smoothest game it just had the darkness I like.
Vampire was just a sexy game overall, with a very kick ass soundtrack. The hotel level was one of the scariest levels in any game...if you are that scared in a game, it lends to great immersion.
I would give replayability to Bioware though, since they have, and continue to master voice work, and depth of character relationships.
All 4 games are wonderful...Trooka is dead, but I wish someone would pick up the Vampire franchise. At least there will be a Witcher 2.
I can't wait for ME2.

Still, there was an incredible sense of epicness about the game. I found myself actually drawn in by the cutscenes. Titillated by conversation outcomes. Incredibly impressed with the location designs (as someone mentioned, Denerim feels oddly empty compared to say, The Citadel)...it just WOWED me far more often than DAO managed to.
Don't get me wrong. as I've already stated, I love Dragon Age, and on the whole, it does far more things right than ME managed; whilst DAO may have/had a a strangely high amount of bugs, ME just seemed to replace those with broken gameplay mechanics, that can be limiting to the point it's painful to NOT take advantage of them (infinite immunity anyone? Or what about singularity/lift spam?
On that note, I'm definitely looking forward to the improvements they've made to ME2. On the whole, it looks far more balanced than the original did. It's pretty nice to see that they took the issues raised against 1 and sought to improve on them for 2.

I found the actual story line to be very short, most of the game spent driving around in your little tank shooting things and picking up bits of rubbish.
No, without a doubt, DAO is the game I prefer.

On the other hand, driving around dozens of featureless planets and killing giant worms gets old REALLY fast -- but if you only do the main storyline missions then ME is too short. Nothing in DA:O felt like "padding".
I also found the world a bit more convincing in DA:O, probably because it's closely modeled on medieval Europe, and is at a more human scale.
Bottom line: they are both fantastic games and easily deserving of a couple of playthroughs each. It's easy to forget sometimes just how good Bioware is as a developer. Not many companies today invest in great writing and attention to detail. I'd preorder any Bioware game in an instant.

The setting is too different to be comparable. Only parallels are the existence of different races/species and political frictions between them.
Battle is entirely different and while both are great it's really a matter on what a player likes better. I enjoyed both, while I have a slight preference to the tactical approach of DAO.
The moral system in ME is simpler and more straight-forward while DAO offers a more complex experience with the individual approval of companions. Only thing is, that with enough gifts in the backpack offending certain companions can often be remedied too easily.
The competitive and perhaps more comparable part is the storytelling, pace, timing and amount of content. DAO excels in variation and amount of content. It is also more extendable and has more variation in quests and player choices. ME has a more straight-forward and linear structure with a more focused and in the main-plot more intense narration with most subquests being a bit repetitive. DAO has some very intense narration in certain subplots of the game and more variation in subquests. The main-plot of ME appears to run more smoothly, while DAO's main plot appears more segmented into distinct parts/chapters.
While I give the cake to DAO, I have to admit, that I personally had a few more emotionally intense moments in ME than any in DAO. Without spoiling anything I can only mention the speeches held by certain NPCs (and PC) in ME, as well as two situations related to companions. (PM me, if you like to know which.)
So, some details in ME involved me emotionally stronger, while the overall game of DAO offers me a lot more fun and replayability with all it's details, origins, the more detailed characters, especially companions, and also the perspective of future content created by Bioware and talented members of the community.
P.S.: ENCHANTMENT!! =)

I would have to say that davids book made the DA world come to life more so then the game has done for me tho, or perhaps that is just because i read the book first? im not sure. Where as the Mass Effect books didn't do the game justice, but again, perhaps that is becuase i played the game first?

1. I realize ME is more of a "shooter" RPG. Is fighting really difficult if you have no experiences with shooting stuff?
2. Should you play ME 1 before ME2 or can you jump to ME2 right away?

I dont like the storyline for Dao. I've been playing BW games since BG and the last few just arent as good. I think its the plot.
Nwn,JE, Dao, all three could have had better storylines to draw the PC in.
Edit: Ps lets not forget about revan(kotor), weird weird story/plot

I agree, this is a major difference in approach for Bioware, having a character such as Shepard who is so well crafted that it sort of removes the need to role-play so much.
Shepard is such a good identity that i only play that profile either in paragon or ruthless fashion, making different choices. However because Bioware have invented this popular character it makes ME more of a fixed story than say DAO where your protagonist can have various very diffferent personas.

I have the PC-version. (Just to make sure I say something, which differs on e.g. the 360) There are five difficulty settings. ("Casual", "Normal", "Veteran", "Hardcore", "Insanity"). I played my fist game on "veteran" and it was quite ok for me except for maybe a few tough situations. I'm not a shooter crack, but managed to enjoy "hardcore". There is also a "target assist" function, which can be adjusted ("low", "normal", "high"), which I used at "normal" so far. So, from my point of view it's safe to say "yes". You can also pause the combat similar to DA and issue commands to companions (up to two simultaneously) and use medi-gels. There were some tough fights (for me) on my chosen difficulty, but not too difficult.Apocalizz wrote...
I only have experiences with playing Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and Dragon Age...so more the fantasy RPGs. However, I like DA so much, I'm wondering if I should try Mass Effect. Maybe someone cares to answer these questions for me:
1. I realize ME is more of a "shooter" RPG. Is fighting really difficult if you have no experiences with shooting stuff?
Since ME2 is based on ME and some decisions made in ME are being imported from a save-game of ME, I'd recommend to first play ME(1). Also you can probably get it at a cheaper price by now, just in case you like it less than I'd expect. To me it's well worth it, especially, if you also like sci-fi.2. Should you play ME 1 before ME2 or can you jump to ME2 right away?
But ME is not DA. The RPG-part is lighter than in DAO. The dialogues are great, the story and setting are superb, the number of classes and character development somewhat simpler than in DAO, and combat more action oriented. You'll also spend quite some time in the Mako, a all-terrain gunned multi-purpose vehicle, which you use to drive across the surface of planets quite often. I needed a little bit to get the hang of it, especially vehicle combat, but then it was fun.
But ME has a great story you wouldn't want to miss. Exceptional writing (again) from Bioware here. I love both games a lot.

JE and KotOR had an outstanding story IMHO. NWN had it's great parts, but the total seems to be less than the sum of its pieces. With DAO the whole storyline including the seperate parts (chapters, main quests) are well written, but in spite of some interesting surprises there is less of a huge secret to be discovered compared to KotOR and JE.Kesica wrote...

To me ME is somewhere in the middle. It has a few weak points, but it drew me in more than most other games ever. I stated in another thread already, that especially ME is hard to compare to DAO. It's more straight-forward plotwise, with some twists on the way, while with DAO I get more the feeling of playing seperate chapters with greater variation.
So, concerning KotOR: Actually KotOR's story and characters is much, much better than what George Lucas himself came up with in Episodes I-III.

Dragon Age is longer, has better characters, has better party interaction, has a better inventory system, has more of a classic RPG feel and I prefer the gameplay.

Then ME2 may feel more "clumsy" to you. The ME-series is a RPG-lite system with few skills and comparably little character development. ME2 reduces the skills, enhances the action part, introduces more weapons, and shifts even more towards an action game.
At the same time it is supposed to have more dialogue, so I'm extremely curious what the complete game will be like. I loved ME enough to get ME2 "for sure", but I'm a little bit sceptic how Bioware treated the RPG-part.

Both have good stories with interesting party members (although as much as I like Leliana and Oghren, I think I have to give the edge to Mass Effect for having more characters that I really like).
Both games also have great level design (although some of the side planets in ME could get redundant, and I have to give the edge to DA in this regard).
The voice acting is great on both (although it was kind of a letdown that the main character does not speak in DA, despite the character creation process making it seem as if they would speak).
DA has more choices for character appearance and equipment, while ME had a much better inventory system.
All in all, they are both about equal in my book, but if I really had to choose, I'd probably go with Mass Effect.
