Background of Anders before he appeared in games, particuallary DA2:

Anders real name is unknown, and his nickname refers to the fact that his family is from Anderfels.
When he started to exhibit magical abilities at the age of twelve he was handcuffed and taken by the templars to the Ferelden cricle. The only personal possession he was allowed to keep was a pillow hand-embroidered by his mother which he offers to give to Varric on act 3 of DA2. Anders despised the Circle and compared it to a prison.
He made at least seven and at most dozensof attempts to escape the tower, each time being returned and punished by the templars. Anders' next-to-last escape earned him a year of solitary confinement, in which the only company he had most days was the tower's mouser named Mr. Wiggums. According to Anders, the cat became possessed by a rage demon and took out three templars . The final time Anders managed to run away was before Uldred gone mad.

Despite the various potential outcomes of Awakening, Anders becomes a Grey Warden, meets Justice andsurvives. If Anders is left to defend the Vigil's keepthat was not fully upgraded, he doesn't die but rather escapes using a badly burned body in robes as a decoy. Anders tells this to Nathaniel if they meet in the Deep roads seven years later.

The Wardens force Anders to give Ser-Pouce-a-lot to a friend in Amaranthine, claiming that he made Anders toosoft. Anders misses the cat and keeps mentioning it.
A templar, Rolan, infiltrates the Grey Warden ranks to keep a close watch on Anders. He accuses Anders of becoming an abominationand brings the templars down on him, stating that the Wardens agreed with the decision. Anders kills Rolan, the templars and the Wardens supporting Rolan and flees. (its kinda hinted that because of Justice Anders have become very strong particulary against Templars)

Next are events of DA2 which you all know of.

Purpose of the thread:

Anders plays a very great role in DA2 He is one of the 4 characters that we have no way of not recruiting along with Aveline and Varric and our alive sibiling. I'm assuming at the very least 40% of players kept Anders alive, but I safely dare to say it easlily reaches 50% as well but lets assume the least for now. Anyway I personally think he needs a big cameo if kept alive or even companion if Bioware is planning to have replacement companions. Nothing is certain yet but of they are gonna do replacement companions there is no one better than Anders since the decision to kill him or let him live drops on hawke like an ultimatum. its forced and much more important than events involving other characters. hence their recruitment can be ignored. He is like Alistar of Origins, well not precisely but no one is closer to this comparison. Besides who is more important than Anders, the mage who sparked flames of freedom for all mages.

I feel anders is too important not to have a major role in inquisition. Weren't we told there will be quite handful of returning characters? Here is to hoping one will be Anders :P

As long as I can punch Anders in the face.
I didn't kill him but I didn't feel like I could properly express my feelings toward the situation.

Anders is my favourite DA character, so naturally I would love to see him again ... on the other hand, if he's going to turn up just to die or be some kind of horrible ghoul or have been separated from my Hawke forever or something, then maybe I'd rather he didn't appear. So I guess ... it depends. XD

Haven't we seen enough of him?
I like Anders, but I feel like we should let him rest. He blew up the damn Chantry, if anyone who witnessed it is still alive, he was most likely fried before he even made it out of Kirkwall.

I don't know what you think but Anders and Varric friendship probably bitter after the act of terror.

When you ask for opinion about should you kill him or not, Varric stay neutral by saying he sick
of this Mage and Templar conflict. So, I doubt their friendship is that strong.

I don't think so, cause if romanced its confirmed he leaves kirkwall with Hawke.

Actually all alive companions leave kirkwall with Hawke so...

Is there some particular reason he has to be a replacement for Varric?  Why can't he just appear in the game on his own merits (assuming he's not dead)?

Dunno.  Something in the thread title suggested it.  I was unclear on that point.

I just said Variric will miss him, that's all.

I wouldn't mind having him show up in a small role in a he-lives import, but I'd rather see new characters take the spotlight in a new game.

Hm, I think he'd be one of the characters from previous games that could have the best cameo, since he's sort of central to the whole thing. I hope it could make a difference if he ended up helping the Templars (and didn't commit suicide afterwards)

Even though I killed him in most of my playthroughs I hope it makes some sort of change, and not just a "ohai" cameo.

A character that has huge impact on players can return. Impact doesn't mean liking the character but the effct it has, So many players decision, views etc has been changed cause of anders, he changed the game for both the players who liked hom or hated him. Tali from ME appears in all 3 games and there are many scenes where she can die depending on the player, but yet it was welcome that we had a chance to save her and keep her in all 3 games. Tali didn't blow up a religious building, sure but the case of having impact on the game perfetly applies to Anders. Tali had a great impact and she and legion are kinda like templars and mages (their heroes). I think Anders can return and in a good and big way.

Anders was a really great character, his views perfectly justified and his actions are those of a desperate hero. He deserves to be in DA:I

Your title seems to suggest you want Anders as a replacement for Varric for those players who import a save with Anders alive: "Varric needs his best blondie buddy. Anders as replacement character for players who kept him alive, PLEASE."

Was your use of "replacement" a mistake then? If not Varric, who do you want him to replace? One of the new companions we know next to nothing about?

I kept imagining Anders narrating over the trailer and taking Morrigan's place at the end of the trailer. How would that have made you feel?

Not an Anders hater, but even I think he deserved that shank in the back for what he did.

If anything, Anders is a flawed hero of a sort. He wants to free mages from oppression, but he uses underhanded tactics of getting it done. He's manipulative, hypocritical, merciless towards Templars even "good" Templars, and a liar. And that in my opinion is what makes him a great character.

QFT. This made me sooooooo angry. I wanted Hawke to yell at him, or scream or smack him. Screw stabbing him in the back.. Then if you let him live, he shows no remorse. Like, okay, you achieved your goal but you just killed innocent people. Don't frikkin' smile at me. -___________-

Would like cameos from Loghain and Anders for those of us that spared both.

That would REALLY torque some folks. LOL
