I recently read this book with this side character (actually whatever you call a character that's even less than a side character) in it. A pale, broody dude with pouty lips and black curly hair that he had to casually flick out of his eyes. Now that's stuck in my head. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE WITH CURLY HAIR. And more broody types that don't need fixing. And circles under their eyes. Bursted blood vessels are sexy.

A female social climber, the type that host waterfront suppers with riparian entertainment. As a LI, she will be bossy, demanding.

A mage trapped in a cat's body (possibly voiced by Nick Bakay), that can still perform magic. Not sure if he should be a LI.

A sailor (though he can be part of Plaintiff's gang, along with a templar, horseback rider and a native from a far away land) who specialises in dual wielding, though a crossbow is an alternative.

A Revered Mother who is secretly an Apostate Mage. As a LI she prefers to keep it secret. She likes secrets.

Alistair's nephew, obsessed about Alistair, in essence, he is Alistair's Conrad Verner.

The obvious answer to this question is clearly "I want Merrill" also Verric would be nice from DA2.  I do miss my dog from the original game though.

As far as new companions....

An actual honest to goodness Templar, for reals, not my brother who was a templar, not aveline's not long for this world husband, an actual this is what he is in the plot Templar.  Truth be told the best way to do this would be sort of gating the character off in such a way that if they join you you basically have to go murder some mages or if you back down from that they either abandon or turn on you.

Did I mention there should also be more Merrill?

I also wouldn't be opposed to basically assembling a rogues gallery of a castless dwarf, a blood mage, a city elf, and a Tal-Vashoth.  Basically all the people actively hated by most of the population.

I would of course be the noble versions of these characters who only occasionally dish out comuppance, but it would be fun.  (and more fun with Merrill.)

I don't know about the LI part, but that does sound like a really interesting premise.

Cullen as an LI, but he's horribly mutilated and burned by a blood mage he was hunting. This seems like the kind of sadism the writers love.

More than two old companions would be too much, but I think I'd like Leliana in DA 3. And Varric it's always cool of course. I assume he is likely in. Cassandra is almost a given too and I like her.
p.s. I don't consider Tallis an old companion. I wouldn't mind her or another character that has similar connections to the qun.

Frankly, having someone like Morrigan as a companion wouldn't really make any sense given that by now, she's probably even more powerful than she was at the end of DA:O - and even then she was a very powerful mage. If you don't start out at the same level, she could only join your party towards the end of the game.

The same is true of most other former companions.

Random speculation:

2handed warrior: The Tal-Vashoth from the trailer. Might be Iron Bull from survey. If not him then Casandra.
Shield-and-weapon warrior: Cullen or the Grey Warden that(I think) showed up in the survey and when they talked about hypothetical armor system.
Ranged Rogue: Varric.
Meele Rogue: Cole or the other rogue from the survey. Sera, was it?
Damage Mage: That Dorian fellow.
Heal Mage: ?

Someone talked about 10 companions so I guess the remaining places will be taken by the alternatives above.

I think that two characters who are brother and sister (or two sis or two bro) as compagnions could have been very nice. Supposing they are very loyal to each others (despite their différences), it would have been very interesting to explore the limit of their loyalty during de game and which side they might have picked if they were forced to by the events : yours, duty or family.

An other good point about that is the banters, since those two characters are supposed to know very well each other, I can picture them handling interesting discutions during exploration without fighting all the time, support each other no matter what, ...

Plus on the gameplay side, it would have been nice if they might have got some combo/complementary skills.
