Trailer without actual gameplay. Why?

 TL:DR in title.

First, i am really really really really happy that DA:I got another year in development. And that it will be available for all the consoles. And that it will be much more open worldish then that Kirkwall jail. And the trailer was a good one. Varric looks better then in that other game that never happened anyway.
I felt so much a happy camper that i actually considered to preorder despite my previous claims.

But something started to nag me - there is no actual gameplay shown and the game was supposed to be released in a few months. Surely ,most of the "old" DA3 content should be done by now, with dozens of hours of actual gameplay finished and ready to be shown.
The delay, according to all the info, is to increase the scope of the game. Larger areas ,more quests and stuff like that. Add awesomness to existing content.
And yet, despite all marketing logic , despite all the mentioning of cool new engine - all we are shown are nice cinematics and no actual game meat. Maybe i am missing something, but the only reasons for this that i can find are wearing tin foil hats.
Please tell me i am missing something. Pretty please?

It could be the gameplay isn't finalized and they don't want to show content that might change because of the accusations of "lying" with Mass Effect 3 for things weren't exactly as described.

Marketing types like to pace things. Reveal too much a way out, and they'll run out of things to talk about when they need to be pushing sales.

Plus things being subject to change, good trailers taking effort to promote and other stuff like that.

They are probably still working on the gameplay.
And there's nothing official about the delay , me think they thought working on Frosbite would go smoother...

And the trailer is done with the current engine , so we could have that as cinematics....I mean the really good cinematics , like Ostaggar back in the day.

And i Don't think they can show something that is not polished or lack details , even if the game has a whole new year to be released , people are still suspicious after DA2.
I don't think they can afford something like a bad demo ...

If you look at the trailer , it's full of details. There are details all over the place ...they really worked hard on this.
So even if trailer are deceptive , and it's not gameplay , "Fire above " is good news , IMHo.

The release is End of 2014 (at least that what it says on the trailer). Also it is a "1st trailer" or "teaser type" of trailer and, in my impression, that quiet often means "story moments" umm ... "story moment impressions".
If the release would be a couple of month away than I'd imaging you'd see some "game play trailer" but still not as the very first trailer ... it is more about "wetting ones appetite" for the game then going into the "specifics and meat".

Bioware said that they wont release any info until they are ready because they don't want to leave us with questions or cause confusion, its part of there show don't tell policy.

Now how showing a in engine cut scene with no gameplay is in keeping with the new Bioware policy I don't know.

Is Bioware guaranteeing that all that was seen in the trailer will appear in the game and look exactly the same, because if not why cant they talk about other features that we want to know about without say that they cant because things might change.

I am all for low profile and not discussing main themes or endings, not showing protagonist and companions and stuff like that.
But showing in game footage of mob running , some meaningless cool-looking NPC from irrelevant fetch me side quest just stanind there and things like this - why not?

Bioware in the past has been accused of lying, and I think a lot of this has to do with them releasing too much too early , and, why would you want gameplay that may not reflect the finished product?

You might be okay with that, but people will over analyze anything shown and if there is anything wrong with the animations it will start a whole "BioWare is doomed" style threads.

Besides they are saying all that cinematic was done using scripted events using the game engine that means all the character movements and such is what it might be like while playing the game.

Not cinematic enough I suppose. Unlike AC's/The Witcher's etc... where combat without the HUD can look cinematic.

Everyone does it now, look at the Thief 4 stuff - that has all been (rather boring) cinematics.

I guess from a marketing point of view you want to try and build some excitement before you give away too many details.

Why not?

It's the very first trailer, the very first little glimpse of what Dragon Age: Inquisition will be. There's plenty of time to show off gameplay and everything else throughout the next year.

Why not simply enjoy what's there rather than complain about what isn't? Especially considering that we are a year away from it's release.

Plants and zombies: garden warfare. Titanfall. Even Mirror's edge. All have gameplay bits in trailer.
DA:I ,just like that star wars game that just started development - cinematics only.
Is it end of the world - certainly not. Is it reason enough to be confused - yes,yes it most certainly is.

What's so confusing about it? Different companies--different choices.

It will released on fall 2014, still a long time 'til it come out.

Bioware also try to play safe this time. So, I don't think they gonna released anything that
probably cause the negative. They screwed up 3 times already.

I even glad that they decide to released in-game footage trailer. Bioware usually kick off with
CG teaser.

I honestly can't recall a game that showed gameplay in their announcement trailer. Normally it's cutscenes and voice overs. Check & check.
The gameplay vids always come later, closer to release, so I wouldn't worry about it for awhile.

It is all EA. Same marketing people. All those games (except Mirror with unknown date) will be released in 2014. All are first trailers. he only game that was actually supposed to be released in 2013 shows less actual game stuff then the others.
Sure, nothing confusing with that.

Yeah, i just checked ME2,ME3 and DA2 reveal trailers.
ME3 and DA2 did not show gameplay. So maybe it is the trend. It still confuses me ,especially since 2013 was the goal of DA3 content, but i hope you are correct.

Still not sure what you're getting at to be honest.

The first trailer for Dragon Age Origins had no gameplay in it, same was the case for Dragon Age 2. Nothing confusing whatsoever about the fact that BioWare are continuing down that path, at least none that I can see.

game is probs gonna be awful i hate to break it to u guys. Devs actually listening to ppl on this forum, and Devs actually thinking there are good, significant parts of DA2 to salvage and incorporate into DA:O are the main problems. Even if they had gameplay to show you it'd probably look pretty terrible.

y y doomsayer n all that and true, i am doomsaying a little bit but I'm pretty sure that is the statistically probably outcome based on information available.

Meh.

I don't care about CGI trailers either.
