The Wii-U. We've got some problems here. First, the positives.
Backwards compatibility. That's always a winner. That opens up a huge game library for one machine, not to mention the Virtual Console for downloadable classics. I much prefer physical BC over cloud, but that's tbd.
The closest to a gamer friendly console among the big three. Yes, it has it's sideshows, but generally speaking, plug and play.
A non traditionial gamepad that I suppose is a love or hate thing. But a game such as Watch Dogs, I believe, will benefit best here, as the gamepad opens up unique possibilities.
There's more positives, but now to the bad.
The gamepad. While unique and interesting, Nintendo opted to put money here, rather than match the power of upcoming consoles. I personally don't care. It still pumps out some gorgeous eye candy. However, this is viewed as a behind the the times machine, again, and it's part of the Wii-U's woes, unfortunately.
The games. Wii-U has lots of games. Some great, some good, some bad. Their heavy hitter 1st party games are mostly yet future, and struggling fierce with 3rd party support. Ubisoft is one of their biggest supporters and cheerleaders, but this recent tweet...
"Ubisoft at investor meeting said it has reduced plans for WiiU following soft launch and expects price cuts given sales and weaker yen"
Another major 3rd party blow to Wii-U. But it's very difficult to blame these 3rd parties when the bottom line comes down to console sales. It would simply just be bad business.
It's certainly a tough position for Nintendo. They have got to rally the faithful core, and get those 1st party games out the door asap. Nintendo can easily afford a flop, as money isn't an issue for them. But the fact is, there will come a time when they will have to move systems off shelves with their tried and true IPs, to get 3rd parties back on board.
Wii-U doesn't have to dominate the other consoles. It just nicely needs to co-exist. I believe it will do just that in the end.
