3DS is selling like gangbusters. Nintendo knows handhelds, and is proving they still have a place in a tablet and smart phone world. This is because of their unique brand of games, two screens opening up opportunities for creativity, and there is still something to be said for a stick and buttons. 3DS is steam rolling. Another winner for Ninty.

The Wii-U. We've got some problems here. First, the positives.

Backwards compatibility. That's always a winner. That opens up a huge game library for one machine, not to mention the Virtual Console for downloadable classics. I much prefer physical BC over cloud, but that's tbd.

The closest to a gamer friendly console among the big three. Yes, it has it's sideshows, but generally speaking, plug and play.

A non traditionial gamepad that I suppose is a love or hate thing. But a game such as Watch Dogs, I believe, will benefit best here, as the gamepad opens up unique possibilities.

There's more positives, but now to the bad.

The gamepad. While unique and interesting, Nintendo opted to put money here, rather than match the power of upcoming consoles. I personally don't care. It still pumps out some gorgeous eye candy. However, this is viewed as a behind the the times machine, again, and it's part of the Wii-U's woes, unfortunately.

The games. Wii-U has lots of games. Some great, some good, some bad. Their heavy hitter 1st party games are mostly yet future, and struggling fierce with 3rd party support. Ubisoft is one of their biggest supporters and cheerleaders, but this recent tweet...

"Ubisoft at investor meeting said it has reduced plans for WiiU following soft launch and expects price cuts given sales and weaker yen"

Another major 3rd party blow to Wii-U. But it's very difficult to blame these 3rd parties when the bottom line comes down to console sales. It would simply just be bad business.

It's certainly a tough position for Nintendo. They have got to rally the faithful core, and get those 1st party games out the door asap. Nintendo can easily afford a flop, as money isn't an issue for them. But the fact is, there will come a time when they will have to move systems off shelves with their tried and true IPs, to get 3rd parties back on board.

Wii-U doesn't have to dominate the other consoles. It just nicely needs to co-exist. I believe it will do just that in the end.

They do. They really, really do. Word is, there is something in development by them that is out of the norm for a Ninty IP.

Bayonetta 2 has got be seriously considering a wiiU. It would have been great if they could have exclusified Deus HR directors cut too. But it's coming to multiplatform. I do not care about zelda, donkey kong or mario, in short Nintendo's first party stuff does not appeal to me. But Bayonetta 2 is legit. If they release a Bayonetta 2 bundle for sub 250 bucks, I'd get one.

Are you implying that shooters and sport games, which both have a very immature audience of teenage kids and dudebro gamers, are mature?

Nintendo is more mature than that.

Immature kids play CoD and Fifa (and think it's really mature and cool).

Mature adults play Nintendo.

And this:

I'm soooooo happy to be a 3DS owner. We 3DS owners are totally getting spoiled by Nintendo this year (and the next one).

I think Smash Bros is the big gun that will push more Wii-Us off the shelves. It seems to genuinely have broad appeal.

Nintendo needs to stop developing hardware and put their games on other devices.

Think about it. Think about how much pokemon and mario would sell on the phone/tablet market? You think its successful now, it would make all those facebook games look niche. And you know millions of playstation/xbox gamers would swallow Zelda and Metroid whole.

They are making money on hardware for sure, at least for now. But less and less, and the less hardware they sell the less software they sell. Break down that barrier at the cost of hardware profit and they could stand to just explode their software profit. They would, withotu a doubt, be the #1 mobile company in the world, day one, and instantly amongst if not the top third party publisher of console games. Sooner or later I think they will go this rout regardless, but it would be better for them to jump into it willingly and head first then to stumble into it like Sega did. If they stumble into it then we might see a period of them not doing too well before they really grew into it, but even if that were to occur, their IP's are too huge to not prop them right back up.

No. Just no.

You make it sound as if Nintendo is heading the same way as Sega did. You couldn't be furter from the truth.

Wii was the best-selling console of previous gen and Nintendo's handhelds always have been the best selling handhelds.

Nintendo doesn't need to BECOME the no. 1 of the mobile gaming market because Nintendo ALREADY IS the no. 1 of the mobile gaming market.

Nintendo keeps making buckets of money with their handheld devices, they're not going anywhere anytime soon. Nintendo is here to stay.

New & old IP's, more third party stuff, more & moooaaar of their old games released digitally.

They should offer some third party a good incentive to do something really awesome and experimental, even if just to warm other devs up to the WiiU. A game like The World Ends With You that experimented with the DS capabilities really warmed me up to that system, WiiU needs its own TWEWY.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing, adding more of the older games from the early eras will give an incentive for people wanting to get back to their roots or parents who want to share that with their kids.
Take their bread winners into new territory. Release an open world Pokemon game. Seriously, a Pokemon game with a giant 3d map & more interactivity would satisfy allot of people. Be no different than what they did going with the N64 with Mario. & I think Pokemon would find great use for that tablet thing.

It might sound crazy, but I know Nintendo has said that if they were to get out of the console business, they're taking their IPs with them. They just have no financial concerns, as they have somewhere around 8 to 10 bil in the bank.

Can I ask, does it really matter if WiiU doesn't match the power of the PS4/X1? Are graphics really so important when Last gens graphics were so good (or good enough). When most of Nintendo's IPs are more stylized characters and generally more cartoon like. Processing power can be used for scenery porn and putting more characters on screen but in my opinion, people make too much fuss about 'power'

Nintendo makes great use of art style in their games. Wind Waker still looks amazing. Mario Kart 8 looks really great and the clean graphics just really work. At least so far a couple of games have been confirmed to run at 1080p at 60 fps which is all I really want from next gen consoles higher resolutions and 60frames.

Can they? They don't also happen to be an insurance/tech company like Sony, or a PC software company like Microsoft... do they?

That aside (more a question than disagreement), I agree with your assessment. I wish they would have had a better showing with their Nintendo Direct/E3/etc, but I'm still stoked for some of their new releases... but they really need to get more of those high quality first party Wii U games ready to go.

I hope they don't bow out of the home console market, I'm tired of everything boiling down to two choices that are almost exactly the same. Unless that Steambox comes along... or Sega comes back. What was the Spectrum anyway? (I guess that's off-topic)

Yes, just look at this. It's insane.

Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank - enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there's almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out - we're in the year 2075 by this point - they've got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.
