Just use Mass Effect 1 as a template. Seriously just do it. The last thing most of us here want to see is a great franchise turning into some shooter crap.

Bad idea.  ME4 would turn into terrible driving simulator crap if ME1 was used as a template.

However, what I believe they should do is keep the combat & inventory system from ME3 and improve it by making a few changes, create a new morality system, remove all autodialogue forever, make exploration fun for once, and lastly, write a coherent story.

Rather not.

When some things were good in ME1, other were bad or improved in next volumes.

The problem is that people who like RPGs don't agree on what they like about them, or even what defines them.

True enough.

But if you take away too many rpg features, it still stops being an rpg.

As for what I think needs to be done with th enet Mass Effect game:

Have a freaking clue where the story is going this time!

The next Mass Effect game?!? No. Just no. Not after the way they butchered the series with what they did in ME3. There is no sense in kicking a dead dog. The best thing they can do for the series now is just leave it in peace. Sadly there is no saving this once great series now. Not after the complete disaster which is the final 30 minutes of ME3.

I respectfully disagree with making Mass Effect more traditional RPG. Inventory management is annoying and so is worrying so much about stats. I thought ME3 struck a solid balance of letting you improve and modify weapons and improve skills without being tedious. What makes an RPG an RPG to me is the character development and choice impact, not the bean counting.

Funnily, for once it's probably Bioware's fault for how things went down. And EA is the one that still wants to milk this cow. I bet they didn't want it to end this way. It's not good for business, at the very least.

But yeah, I think it's dead too. I don't understand how they're going to dig themselves out.

I mostly preferred ME1 rpg style. Liked the freedom, more open world (yes I enjoyed Mako), though level design was generally better in later games. Still, I would prefer ME2-style combat as ME1 suffered from typical "shooting rpg's" problem which is missing the shots from the range of smelly breath. On the other hand, ME3's combat is a little bit too hasty.

As for character development, I would search for new balance as ME1 was a bit too complicated, it was difficult to figure out what bonus comes from where, too many skills but too less important skills. Also the inventory was horrible, but I would warmly welcome back ME1's armor system (with an option to change my teammates' gear) combined with ME3's weapon tweaking. Back to character dev, I think it would be nice to try The Witcher 2 way with separate "roads" to evolve. No basic class choice, just deciding whether you prefer to focus on guns, melee or biotics and choosing additional skills based on that.

I am pretty happy if:

-No sticky walls (and similar universal button getting inside your brain so it explodes and your character looks like epileptic)
-More custom character(s) options.
-Co-op in the storyline would be a HUGE bonus. I'd love to be able to share a ship, mission, agenda with my wonderful spouse...and perhaps join a friend or two in their campains. Co-op on the same console and co-op via net on pc.

I think the biotic, vs tech, vs weapon effects should have gotten a serious analysis to better structure it especially if more multiplayer swarm mode is planned. The current me3 multiplayer feels a little ad-hoc in this regard and certain things overwrites other powers AND got more individual strength/utility/effects AND got more combination strength/utility/effects.

Keywords: What overwrites what (preferably will a better code-structure mean that overwrites are not needed),
tech vs weapon vs biotic INDIVIDUAL strength/utility/effects
vs
tech vs weapon vs biotic COMBINATION strength/utility/effects.
