In Inquisition you will be able to choose from one of a few possible backgrounds.

Unlike Origins, you won't be able to play out these backgrounds, neither will you get a choice of race.:crying:
Think of it as Mass Effect's Millitary Reputation and Childhood.

Pick a background
Pick an age group

___________________________________________________________________________________
Here is a few stipulations.
First there are no class specific backgrounds on this list.
A mage could be an agent of the templar.
In the apostate and circle mage backstories, if you're not a mage, you have a sibling who is a mage.
In all other backgrounds, if you're a mage, you have hidden your magical abilities from society.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Background:

Templar: Your job is to keep mages under control. Whether you choose to be a mage sympathiser or not is up to you.

Circle Mage: You belong to the circle, where you live under the fear of the Templars and daemons. Whether you chose to be submissive to the Templars or not is up to you.

Apostate Mage: You ran from the circle. Now you have the templars chasing after you.

Politician: You are trying to climb the political ladder in Orlais. Here you will face corruption, deceit and betrayal.

Elven Sympathiser: You are sympathetic towards the plight of the elves. As a result you have become one of the main instigators in the Elven rebellion.

The Human Qunari:  You are a human who converted to the Qun religion.

The Orlesian Noble: You are of noble birth.

Orlesian Commoner: You live on the streets in extreme poverty, comitting crime to make ends meet.

Tivinter Cleric: You are a powerful mage from the Tivinter Empire.

Orlesian Guard: You are a prominent Orlesian Guard hoping to one day become an Orlesian Chevalier...

Grey Warden: Inspired by one Grey Warden who ended the fifth blight, you have spent your entire childhood training to become a Grey Warden.

Alienage: Your mother is a human, your father is an elf. You also have a half elf brother. Your entire childhood has been spent in an alienage.

Scoundrel: You are a thief, a player, an adulterer, a liar and are always getting in trouble.

Orphan: Your parents died when you were very young.

Truly mysterious: You are a blank slate with past to speak of.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Age Group: This may affect interactions in the game. Also defines how long ago the events in your background happened.

8-17
18-30
31-50
51 +

___________________________________________________________________________________
Choose Gender: This will affect the love interests available to you. Outside of this, this choice is purely asthetic.

Male
Female

Is the child from Grey Warden back-story too much of a jerk?

Raised By Dwarves: Adopted by dwarves. Blah blah. Consolation prize for no dwarf PCs.

There's a lot of insanity going around in your backstories :)

Personally, I prefer a PC's trauma to begin with the game itself rather than the backstory, but I like a lot of these. Especially the Qun one, though it'd be difficult to implement.

It has been stated that you don't actually play these backgrounds.

It's more like Mass Effect where it's just something that happened in Shepard's past that has no baring on what happens in the game other than a few bits of dialogue and the occasional quest in ME 1.

My favorite one to dream up was Commoner.

Slumdog Millionaire was is of my favorite films of all time.
In Origins my favorite ones were the City Elf and Dwalven Commoner because of the themes of poverty and someone from nowhere saving the day.

I enjoyed writing the Circle Mage, Apostate mage and Templar backgrounds too because they cover the theme of post traumatic stress syndrome. They're horrorfying, scary and leave the player character scared. Not to mention they fit the main story of Inquisition quite well.

Human Qunari  and Elven Sympathiser enabled me to talk about two possible rebellions. This could also be plot relevant. I would also love to see how the player Character interacts with Elves and Qunari.

Grey Warden allowed me to create an unhinged obsessive who loves killing darkspawn. If there are dark spawn in Inquisition this could be interesting to see.

The noble is sort of the confused guy thrown into the action. Before all the chaos they had no troubles in their life but then all of a sudden Orlais is in chaos and everyone that person knows is dead. Trully a lot of tragedy to happen at once.

I know.  It's not a dig against you or anything, just a personal preference of mine that the really character-defining events of a protagonist take place during the body of the game, not the pick-your-own-background.

For example, the Baldur's Gate series has a backstory for the protagonist that's fairly neutral.  All of the really traumatic, character-changing stuff happens later, during the actual gameplay.  I do like your Commoner story, though.  I liked playing something similar with a City Elf.

That was the idea behind the Noble. You haven't had any troubles before the game starts, but during the game all your friends and family die during the various conflicts. So throughout the game you ahve to deal with traumatic events for the first time in your life.

Bare in mind that you were a noble who had no big troubles. You haven't been hardened to the harsh realities of this life. You're naive and immature. A little bit of a jerk. But the events of the game will make you grow into a wiser, stronger person. The Noble may have the most boring backstory but there is the greatest potential for character growth.

The Shepawke - Because... let's face it, Bioware is just putting lipstick on the same old pig.

Pigs are one of my favorite species. (No I don't eat them).
I've met a few. They're actually quite interesting.:wizard:

I'd love a mysterious stranger background with no fixed events in it.

I'd also like the backgrounds not to be class specific. So, if you're from the circle, you could be a mage, but you could also be an initiate with rogue skills, or whatever else you could imagine.

This would be nice. I'm not opposed to the backgrounds, per se, but I do like the idea of making it more-or-less optional.

NWN is BioWare's best performance, so far, in terms of allowing the player to define the PC's backstory as he saw fit. That should be the standard toward which they strive with every title.

I like to think of them as "faction origins".

Something like, let's say: a templar, a grey warden, a seeker, an apostate, a magister, a circle mage (could even be two: a loyalist circle mage and a libertarian circle mage).
Less directly related to the mage-templar conflict could also be a mercenary/ thief/ smuggler/ raider/ pirate, something Orlesian (noble, knight, bard...), a slave, a qunari (a la Tallis, not necesserily a kossith). Playing that through DA:O-like origin stories, or differentiated introductions, that would set some of the PC's story prior to being thrown into the events of DA3,

I guess it could also be done without getting to play any of the origin, so just having it as a choosable background that shows up in particular moments of the common playthrough.

Also
Raised By Dogs:  You ran away from home at the age of 6, and found a wild pack of dogs. Eventually after 2 years of not taking a shower or brushing your teeth, you took the traits of the pack : licking yourself clean.

I'd be interested in a PC who grew up in an alienage because one of their parents was an elf.

Grey Warden: After one fameous Grey Warden ended the fifth blight, you tried to become a Grey Warden yourself. However you were rejected because apparantly 8 years of age is just too young. Nevertheless, being bold you abandoned your home and loving family to go to Orzammar. You have now spent the following years fighting darkspawn in the deep roads. Nevermind the implausibity of a young child killing darkspawn. You've abandoned your family to chase a wild dream. A fantasy. An obsession. As a young adult you eventually became inducted as a Grey Warden after finally proving yourself in the Deep Roads. However your fellow Grey Wardens have become worried about your sanity. Your wild rage has become a major issue. Another issue is that your family have been desperately searching for you. To them you have gone missing...

Ohh, I so like this one! After all the whining in DA2 about the "blighted Deep Roads" I would love to play a wannabe Warden who is this commited to the cause. Who needs family or any relationships, when there is darkspawn to kill! Clearly, the only companion for my Warden can be the darkspawn eating dwarf, whose name I forgot.

Because this scenario would be very fun to play, I may use it regardless of what backstories are offered in the game. :wizard:

Playing a character like Feynriel, who is technically human but had an elven parent, and perhaps was raised to be culturally Dalish (such as following the Creators as his gods), would be a nice option for a potential protagonist. Even someone who is an apostate or from one of the Chantry controlled Circles.

I've done it. It is the most depressing of the backstories.
A half cast child who was hated by everyone except his mother.

His mother was an apostate mage who was made tranquil.

His father was an alcoholic who only cared about alcohol.

Both humans and elves treated him/her like dirt. He/she got into a lot of fights.

I think these backgrounds are a little too specific. Too detailed. I want to be a Noble, and while a fledgling has its appeal, I don't want to be a good-for-nothing brat.

More like educated at the University of Orlais, groomed to take over the family business, starting to get my feet wet in the Grand Game and Orlesian politics. Very cognizant of current events and issues and working to use them to my advantage, if not to the advantage of all. Maybe I'm a practiced archer or swordsman, just not battled tested. I don't want to be a complete newbie.

And no dead family please. I want them involved in the Civil War questline to support or work against me depending on my actions.
