I think these backgrounds are a little too specific. Too detailed. I want to be a Noble, and while a fledgling has its appeal, I don't want to be a good-for-nothing brat.

More like educated at the University of Orlais, groomed to take over the family business, starting to get my feet wet in the Grand Game and Orlesian politics. Very cognizant of current events and issues and working to use them to my advantage, if not to the advantage of all. Maybe I'm a practiced archer or swordsman, just not battled tested. I don't want to be a complete newbie.

And no dead family please. I want them involved in the Civil War questline to support or work against me depending on my actions.

I could add a new background for this.

Politician. Youth 4 Ever! Wonderful idea!

I wasn't being sarcastic.

Check the opening post.
Your idea has been added.

Search for  Politician background.

Whenever people come up with interesting ideas I actually add them to the opening post.

I like to please everyone.
If you have any more ideas for interesting backgrounds, feel free to share.

Who knows. Perhaps your idea will find itself in the opening post.

I completely agree.  The backgrounds should leave as much space as possible for us to define the characters as we see fit.

I'd be interested in a PC who grew up in an alienage because one of their parents was an elf.

I've done it. It is the most depressing of the backstories.
A half cast child who was hated by everyone except his mother.

His mother was an apostate mage who was made tranquil.

His father was an alcoholic who only cared about alcohol.

Both humans and elves treated him/her like dirt. He/she got into a lot of fights.

Oh dear I didn't mean for it to be quite that sad.

^One of the things I would love to see is the PC having an elven sibling. Now that would be interesting.

Probably going to be a few variants like Shepard in Mass Effect.

And more general, less specific.

I'm guessing.

Backgrounds:

Nobleman - Born into a wealthy family with status.

Commoner - Born into a common family.

Orphan - Grew up alone on the streets.

And Reputations:

Hero - You always strive to do the right thing, and your actions have saved many, earning you the love of the people.

Little of Both - To do what you think is best, you do whatever is necessary, be it good or ill, in the name of a greater good.

Criminal - You will do anything to get ahead, and your actions caught up with you, making you reviled by many.

Agreed. I'd love to see some good family conflict based on that.

I'd love to be a young mage commoner who is trained as a warrior or rogue by their parents instead of honing their magic skills- and one day, their untrained magic exploded out by accident, killing/maiming their loved ones. :P
Although that could also be quite depressing.

Okay. Lots of detail has been removed by the requests of the BSN members.

I hope this list is easier to swallow.

I wonder if one could play as a tranquil. I mean the dialog wheel would be flatline, but they ARE part of the Circle. I'm curious of the choices that could happen with such a character who has been cut off from the fade and their emotions.

Would want to be a Qun human mage... But I'm not that insane. I would definitely want to be an apostate. Nothing says 'epic' like "Run for your life".

Can that happen? I thought magic always showed up when you were younger.

Here's a thought.

Why can't apostates have some kind of stealth abilities?

Ditch those robes. Carry discrete easy to hide weapons, and hide in the shadows. Heck Shadow mage could even be a possible specialization.

With every mage possibly being apostates/maleficars, I wonder if any mages side with the Templars, and could be playable as agents of the Chantry/Templars.

Also this would be a great time for Tevinter Imperium to send their own ambassadors out to help their fallow mages through Thedas, so that's another angle to play from.

Here is a few stipulations.

First there are no class specific backgrounds on this list.

A mage could be an agent of the templar.

In the apostate and circle mage backstories, if you're not a mage, you have a sibling who is a mage.

In all other backgrounds, if you're a mage, you have hidden your magical abilities from society.

The origins are not going to work like that, they are going to be more generic. The protagonist is an inquisitor, the origin is what he/she was before. To put an example, Shepard is an alliance soldier, and the pre-service history can be earthborn/colonist/spacer.

Same thing here, the inquisitor may be a former:
- circle mage (options to go either way the conflict here)
- noble (or something else as boring)
- peasant

Definitely not templar of anything like that, the protagonist is going to be an inquisitor first, and the origin is just a backstory to explain how he/she gets to that position.

Would a templar not be in a position to become an inquisitor?
