In both Dragon Age games, that woman gives off a weird vibe and acts strangely.

She's quick to abandon the search for Tamlen and takes the Clan away without even really looking for them. And she sent Mahariel away just as easily(though that's understandable somewhat).

She also wanted to study the Eluvian and was upset when Duncan shattered it, yet in Dragon Age II, she insists its evil and wants nothing to do with it despite a Keeper's duty being to preserve their culture.

She claims she wants Merrill to stay/return to the clan, and even became an abomination to spare Merrill that fate, yet she poisoned the entire clan against her by telling them about her blood magic, almost assuring that they would try to kill her, not accept her as their Keeper.

And Feynriel's mother claims the tribe cast her out for having a human child, yet Marethari says it was her choice to stay away(I guess Marethari is the same type as those dwarves who want their daughter to abandon her casteless son in the deep roads).

So over all, this woman is full of contradictions and double standards.

And it's strange that an ancient creature protective of the Dalish would be provoked at the same time she sends several of her clans hunters to it.(That was never explained) And she sent Pol, a city elf, when they know full well that the Varterral only acknowledges elves with the blood of Arlathan(explained in Witch Hunt). Not to mention the fact that on the way out after killing the Varterral, a flock of demons rise up out of nowhere to attack the player(demons are summoned with blood magic)

Well, she has good reason to want to move the clan in DAO, because a Blight is on the way and the nearby human village threatens to make trouble for the clan. (And even if the Dalish wiped the village off the map, they would bring down the wrath of other humans.)

Feynriel's mother, Arianni, may be shading the truth somewhat when she says the clan sent her away. She may have felt like they were forcing her out, but she also likely felt a bit ashamed for dallying with a human and breaking Dalish tradition.

I'm not 100 per cent on why the Dalish hunters were in the cave. They may have been exploring and just stumbled on the Varterral. Also, the Veil is thin on Sundermount on account of the battles fought there, so the demons need not have been summoned by a blood mage. (That's not to say there weren't blood mages on Sundermount.)

I think Marethari warning the clan about Merrill was sort of a passive-aggressive strategy to use peer pressure to make Merrill come back. "All your friends and family are afraid of you now, Merrill. Don't you think you should come back now?" It wasn't a very good plan, but Marethari was foolish that way.

I can't fault Marethari for wanting to save Merrill, who was probably the closest thing she had to a daughter. But her plans were poorly thought-out, and her interference frequently made things worse. She should have focused more on her responsibilities to the whole clan.
