Okay, then look at Bethany and Merrill. Both are mages who knew the dangers of magic and yet they did'nt go crazy like the vast number of apostates in Kirkwall.

Bethany isn't a bloodmage.

Merrill is probably one of the biggest screwups in the series.

Not to derail this thread too much, but if you want to send me a message and we can debate on how Merrill is such a big screw-up, since I disagree.

I offer the PM debate because this thread's about templars and supporting them, and I don't want to be the one to derail it.

If failing that, then perhaps we can start a thread on it...probably in the DA2 section unless we try to tie the eluvian into Inquisition.

Nope, clearly TSAR thinks mages aren't worthy of the same rights as non mages are which is what some bigots believe in real life.

Oh noes, I think a fictional faction doesn't deserve the same rights as fictional mundanes!

cjones91 wrote...
Then good luck trying to wipe out mages.....the demons and Qunari will be thanking your PCs for making their jobs when they ravage Thedas and your precious mundanes.

Wiping them out completely is counterproductive and serves no tactical advantage, giving them the saarebas treatment is far more productive.

Sure...like that is soo much better.

I don't think Merill was insane in any way, shape or form. What she was was passionate about elven heritage and restoring the eluvian.

You're right, she's not insane; she's a complete moron.

A shame it took until act three to put a sword of mercy through her heart.

And a great character beautifully crafted and written by BioWare in my opinion.  As a player I never quite know what to do about Merril in DA2, even if I romance her.  The cuteness and naivete are a great offest to her fanatically dabbling in pretty dark things.

What can I say? Role-playing a religious fanatic is too damn fun. :D

Merrill isn't all bad, thanks to her antics I was given the opportunity to cleanse the region of those damned elves.

Too bad she wasn't slain with them though.

I never got the chance, even though I carefully avoided gaining too much friendship / rivalry with her. The game had her join me in helping the Templars, anyway.

I agree with cjones. As much as mages are dangerous, the Saarebas treatment is simply wasteful and unneficient without the Qun's mentality to enforce it.
We should just turn all the mages into golems. That way, they'll retain their usefullness; and even increase it because not all mages are as strong as a golem; and we'll have the control rods to make sure they don't get out of line.
Who's with me?

Err...making a golem is comparable to blood magic. Wynne and Alistair both say this if you have them with you in the Deep Roads. All you're doing is taking their life and putting it into stone, and the process sounds very painful, to the point of torture. Doesn't Caradin's journal say that they pour moulten lyrium into people's eye sockets?

Who but the dwarves/tranquil can handle lyrium safely?

Magic golems sound like a recipe for disaster. Like project overlord all over again.

Or even Amgorrok, because a Tevinter Magister and a Dwarf couldnt figure out how to recreate the Anvil of the Void, so they tried making Flesh Golems instead.

And didn't that require blood magic to boot as well?

Sure she is, if you look at the total player base population and how they reacted to her I'll stand by that comment.  If all people that dabble in the things she was dabbling in were loud or arrogant or power hungry it falls within a pretty obvious trope.  She came across as totally naive, cutesy and harmless but very soon after you meet her she uses blood magic to open up a blocked path and acts as if it is nothing.   Right there it gets the player thinking 'Is she really what she seems?'  She doesn't deviate from either the naive overly cute personailty nor the dabbling in ever increasingly nasty things.  It's a very good offset.

I don't think there's anything moronic about Merrill wanting to help the People with potentially beneficial technology, or refusing to misuse blood magic for nearly a decade. I applaud Merrill being proactive about the plight of the People.

Well, for one thing, it was used as near instantaneous communication devices by the Imperium, and that's all they were able to get out of them. Imagine if every clan had one. They could share information about new discoveries near instaneously instead of once every ten years. The Sabrae Caln could've gotten in contact with another clan and had replacement Halla in less than a year, and be on their merry way away from Kirkwall.
