I don't think Merill was insane in any way, shape or form. What she was was passionate about elven heritage and restoring the eluvian.

You're right, she's not insane; she's a complete moron.

A shame it took until act three to put a sword of mercy through her heart.

I don't think there's anything moronic about Merrill wanting to help the People with potentially beneficial technology, or refusing to misuse blood magic for nearly a decade. I applaud Merrill being proactive about the plight of the People.

How will this mirror help her people's plight.

Well, for one thing, it was used as near instantaneous communication devices by the Imperium, and that's all they were able to get out of them. Imagine if every clan had one. They could share information about new discoveries near instaneously instead of once every ten years. The Sabrae Caln could've gotten in contact with another clan and had replacement Halla in less than a year, and be on their merry way away from Kirkwall.

It was also hinted at that the mirrors could be even used for teleportation between devices? I mean, Morrigan used it as a transportation device as well, right?

With the assumption that every clan has its own and that they all function, sure. This is not the case.

*shrug* You asked for how it'll help the people, and I gave a response that would work with the evidence about past uses by the Tevinter Imperium to back it up.

Obviously I meant presently. How would this one mirror solve the plight of the elves, which is not telecommunication. Merrill's goal is to recover their past, when really it should be about helping her people move towards the future. Ask me how many lion skinning procedures I have been trying to recover.

That's a problem afflicting the Dalish as a whole - they're so focused on their past that they can't move forward.

But it does fall under the very definiton on what the Dalish claim they want to achieve, which can be summed up into 3 parts.

1. Relearn and restore their ancient culture and technology that was lost.

Merrill is doing this by studying the eluvian and trying to build it.

2. Reclaim a homeland for all elves.

Let's say every clan did have one, and one clan got land (like in Origins) they could let all the others know very quickly, so they could populate it and set about defending it without sending out runners to let nearby clans know, and the news could spread much quicker.

3. Teach the city elves that which was forgotten.

The eluvians use here would be kind of iffy.

But the eluvian can be tied into 2 out of the 3 parts of the Dalish mission, or what they claim is their mission. I say that does help the people achieve their stated goals.

Does it help them retake a homeland or remove racism? Nope. But it doesn't have to do that in order to help them overall.

She does, but she specifically says it leads to a place beyond the Fade, and she says getting her eluvian to work as it did was very difficult, so it's hard to say if she went to where another active eluvian is (and Finn would know where they are thanks to the ritual done in Witch Hunt) or if it leads into another realm entirely.

The refusal of the Dalish to surrender their religion or their culture isn't a flaw, and with templars hunting them down and Andrastians intolerant towards heathens, their way of life is currently a matter of survival. I'm not sure why some think the Dalish should forefeit their past.

And I'm saying that all of that is pointless. Trying to reclaim something that is of almost no use to you know when survival should be on the top of your list is stupid. We can't say, "what if this clan had one too..." because they don't. Second, you don't need magical mirrors to protect yourself. You need competence and manpower, all of which are wasted trying to be scholars and attacking just about anything foreign coming near, which amazingly does not garner support for the Dalish cause nor does it lower hatred between races. There is literally no point to fixing the Eluvian except to feed Merrill's own pride of being able to accomplish something that no one else could do.

Because its causing stagnation and ultimately slowly killing off their culture anyway. You either adapt and change with the times or you fade away
