I wanted to start a discussion on what people would like to see in Mass Effect 4. I missed out on Casey Hudson's twitter question from last November because, well, I don't have twitter. So, I'm just curious to see what people are thinking.
Personally I reaaaalllly hope it's a sequal rather than a prequal simply in the hopes to see what actually happened to/or is happening with all of these great characters. There is so much potential in a story that revolves around rebuilding the galaxy after the reapers are gone. New problems, threats, and heroes.
The main reason I was disappointed with the ending to Mass Effect 3 was how abrupt it was. I want to know what's going on with these characters after the reapers are gone (I probably spent over 100 hours with these characters! Don't leave me hanging! Please?) Maybe instead of having one main character in Mass Effect 4, the game could be split up into sections and you play each one as a different crew member from the original trilogy, showing the challenges of rebuilding an entire galaxy? And then depending on your love interest from 3, when you play that character's section, Shepherd would be a squadmate (since they have said 4 won't focus on Shepherd? (Obviously that would make the destroy ending cannon, oh and give me a happy ending to 3's romance dang it!)
Anyway, probably not a complete thought, but I was hoping people would take the time to critique my thoughts, share what they want in Mass Effect 4, and hopefully BioWare likes some of the ideas *cough* more Tali please! *cough*
Machine Devils.Nah,just kidding.I actually want a multi-galaxy civilization and it's like the ME trilogy, but on on a larger scale and with better writing. If a smaller-scale story is more your thing, then perhaps a war between mercenary groups in the Terminus systems and you choose which one you want to be in at character customization and your group eventually wins in the ending(or loses if you're playing for worst-case scenario).
Well, you can't really say spoilers cuz none us us know what's going to be in the next game. Except that it'll take place in the ME universe.
As far as what I want....well, BW has always pleased me in the past with their games, so I'm willing to sit back and let them do whatever they want. If it doesn't look like something I'd like (like KOTOR, for instance) I'll simply skip it. Pretty sure I'll be buying it though.

Apparently not, according to an article in OXM Australia.
Casey Hudson wrote...
"On the next Mass Effect game, we're starting fresh - we're developing a completely new fictional universe that'll be the basis of a new generation of gameplay and storytelling. It's an exciting time, and the best part is that I'll continue to work with the team that created the Mass Effect series as we push forward."
If that's to be believed, the only thing that's carrying over is the development team.
In regards to the Casey Hudson quote, I don't understand how it can be a Mass Effect game, but in a "completely new fictional universe". *shrugs shoulders*
I just want to see these characters post destruction ending.
Oh well, I'm sure I will enjoy whatever new story/characters they come up with.
I've said this before, but Miranda better be in... ME needs that ass.. Nah but in all seriousness I'm totally behind you on the sequel over prequel idea... A sequel allows (even if its set further into the future) to make throw backs to the older games and even potentially see how Shepard's choices affected the universe down the line... What the political climate is like amongst the various species, how they rebuilt, etc.
I don't know what a good new enemy would be, maybe it should be set when conflict breaks out between different species after the destruction wrought by the reapers and the ME realys + heavily damaged Citadel leaves a huge vacuum.
Make a canon ending and set it after ME3. I will not buy a prequel. I don't care about playing a trilogy during the Krogan Rebellions; I already know how the war turns out. Prequels are almost always lazy and never have dramatic tension.
A war between Leviathan and Javik. They could travel by getting Leviathan to activate the inactive mass relays using ancient knowledge he aquired a long time ago. Or the inactive relays could have had work conducted by people who wanted to protect the system and way of life in anticipation of their destruction. Since the ending of the reaper threat, nobody was under the illusion that there would be eternal peace, but they rather hoped the size of any conflicts could be contained easily, and wouldn't be so sudden. The old ancient worlds could be part of the setting, such as 'Eingana'.
Some super cool universal reaper enemy, that we never got to see in our own galaxy, because we had the galactic reapers killing everybody off before life could reach a stage where the universal reapers needed to intervene.
Or something with the Leviathan (plural. Leviathans sounds HORRIBLE), but an organism that lives so long probably reproduces at a horribly slow rate. (a reason why the lifespan of the Krogan makes no sense at all. I can see why they'd need to big clutch size with their horrible home planet and everything, but the lifespan makes no sense. But they are alien, so I probably have no idea)
But most importantly, ME1 with ME3 combat system.
edit: not sure if it was ever stated the reapers only acted in our galaxy, but I think they were. Pretty sure the Leviathan state they enthralled everyone everywhere they came in the galaxy, so I assume the Catalyst was only intended for the galaxy.
One of my friends on Xbox Live came up with this great idea for ME4 do it as a prequel to ME1 Where you play as the first 3 council races and see how they started out as well as how they got there and found the Citadel. I then suggested we make the DLC be all the wars for example: Turian unification war, quarian/geth morning war, Krogan Rebellions and Rachi War. These are just a few I like the idea, but personally I LOVE Tali so much as long as I get to romance a quarian female or play as a quarian I don't care.
My Shepard survived in ME3 and it would be pretty awesome if ME4 would acknowledge that or whatever else people went for eg Synthesis, everyone would have the green holographic wiring on them. It would be pretty nice if they also mentioned Shepards love interest (if he had one) and what happened to them. I chose to Romance Tali and frankly I have a soft spot for her romance and would love to see her and Shepard together. Also just an idea the games protagonist could be Shepard's Son/Daughter. If the player chose to Romance a Dextro DNA character (such as Tali and Garrus) then maybe a breakthrough in science could explain how they had a child. Just a couple of ideas, sorry that none of them are plot related i have a mental block when it comes to that.

Set it 20,000 - 500,000 years into the future. This way no need to canonize an ending but if you did cannon anything it should be destroy.
Characters and Hero
Keep the male and female hero fully voiced.
There is way more difference in the male and female playthroughs beyond femhero is lez extraordinaire. Really dialogue differences like Grunt is mshep's hero but Fshep loves Grunt or she's a stripper in the wrong place but male shep doesn't get a second look, better yet have a woman right fhero as a female in the universe so its not a male writer imagining what a female would do because then we end up with such "great" butch fhero moments as boxing and shoving yahags across the floor.
Male and Female should HAVE THEIR OWN WALKING, SITTING, DANCING, RUNNING ANIMATIONS!!!! Do not have a female hero shuffle like a male, don't have a sit like a man wide legged this only servers her to look like a hooker! Do not have her run like an ape! Her running like she did in ME was just fine. I don't play female hero to play a man in drag with water balloons tapped to their chest I'm playing a girl she should act like it!
I wouldn't mind being able to pick different species for the single player quest as the hero and with that having our start points differ and the game intersects after we get on the main quest path similar to how dragon age does it with elf vs human but with no ability or class restrictions and the game varies based on your species as Turians find things funny Krogan do not and people would be more intimidated by a Krogan threatening violence then a Quarian. Races I'd prefer: Human, Asari, Quarian, Turian
Keep the customizable options in fact go back to ME with loads of customization choices also get new hair color AND choices for humans, Quarians and if we do other species skin colors for Quarians, Asari, Krogan, and Turians with the ability to choose gradient color tones so we can make them a sunset color if we choose or an Asari could gradient from blue to purple we'd be able to choose how this occurs does it start in the face and go backwards to a darker tone or does it start from the whole head and go downwards
Keep class specific cutscenes like Biotic shep uses her sheild during the fight with her clone but add more to the main and side missions so if biotic shep could actually utilize a power to remove something, stop something, or make the situation easier for her team then she should do so. For example spector girl blows out the windows and floats down biotic shep floats down just like Liara no stupid brawl drop, solider shep could be stupid and do the brawl drop moment or clip onto the side of the building and repel down, tech shep sends drone out window and runs down the stairs, and adepts float down. Another example (madeup) character npc is going to be crushed by falling debris a biotic and adept can save them however a solider and tech can't they die. In Rannoch that stupid pillar blocks the way there was zero reason a biotic with a biotic in team couldn't lift it or why solider shep didn't just make shift a bomb via their on hand explosives and medigel the only ones needed to go get the real charges would've been tech or biotic shep who is the only biotic in team.
More moments to talk tech/your hero's specialty my solider shep should be able to not just talk and make recommendations in pre battle prep with npcs they should also be able to suggest changes example the moment we're with everyone in ME3 planing how to get to the beam via going through all the reapers my hero soilder who kills reapers for a living should use the knowledge they have from the game like we need cains to get past the reapers or I can summon Lev here. Tech sheps can talk shop with other tech npcs and get pass things like why is EDI hacking that door can't my tech do it or better yet use a hack mine similar to Liara's?
Have your backgrounds count in the main and side quest.
No more auto dialogue! Or only have it sparingly at best there is no reason the dialogue wheel can't be used on ship, during missions, with love interest, with familiar npcs
No butch fhero like boxing yahgs or run/shoving people out windows both these are a male thing if the script calls for she fights a yahg then don't have her shove it around and punch it her punches realistically wouldn't do that much damage instead have her be creative with her own animations and her own fight scenes kickboxing, mix martial arts, use her own biotics to punch it, use her drone as a tech to stun it while she rebounds off a beam to kick harder her enemy to knock his shield down, or solider shep flash bangs the yahg and rebounds off the beam, ect. Fhero doesn't run and shove the asari out the window she'd know this was a stupid idea instead flash bang her and kick her out the window, ect.
Keep hero who as feelings I enjoyed having mshep being able to show emotion during ME3 after Thessia, or with Tali on the Citadel.
If you place the hero in danger that kills them or could be construed as traumatizing ie hacking, used as a puppet like the dead Asari and the Rachni Queen, or other such highly unusual things have the hero give damn about it and develop allow the players with the wheel to reflect to several people if this is traumatizing, or they can display their inner brick by saying it doesn't effect them.
Dialogue
Bring back the dialogue wheel and make it robust ie more then 2 options with 2 options only you make the hero seem stupid having 3 - 5 options make the player feel their hero has a brain and thoughts in their heads. Also make the dialogue choices more specific their highlight the option and float there will get you a pop up box that will give you a brief 2 -3 sentences of the actual words your hero will speak or do what they do in FO show a box with at least one line of what the character will actually say but if you do the box make sure you cover more possible reaction 4 - 7 options plus an 8th investigate option.
Social
Consequences for cheating on your LI other then them going I'm totally fine with it! If your LI is in a powerful position and you cheat on them they should be angry and able to get back at you for instance I cheat on the SB she cuts off contact with me and sends my clone after me.
If you repeat the Lazarus Project ie your character is revived/brought back by space magic you better be prepared to explain in full detail your space magic this also applies to npcs.
Have who you saved, help, or didn't effect what species are in your game did you destroy but have low ems then everyone is barley coming back but if you saved the Quarians and Krogan they're doing very well. The Asari either way are now more like the Quarians seen as the crap of the galaxy as they were withholding beacon info from the galaxy so long ago no one trusts them.
Refrain from everyone's bi or in case of Fshep too many gay options. Now that you're making a game from the beginning establish the gay, straight, and bi characters and keep them that way there is no reason to retcon you want a specific option to happen? Then make a new npcs or crewmen join for ME5 no Kaiden retcons please. I would say the bi option should stay your secretary/yomen/chambers person as its now established this person more or less does this.
Keep carry over romances but don't block them in the future for instance once Garrus was made a romance option for fshep then allow new players and import players to hit on or ask him to date them in ME3 even if they didn't pick him in ME2 the block was stupid. I get Joker never showing interest in 2 games and therefore wouldn't be one in ME3 this made sense but if the character is already a love interest from ME for either hero then ME2 - 3 they should still be able to be a love interest for the hero they were made for example Ash if she was available for all 3 games would've been able to be asked for 3 games she won't be waiting around for your hero but you can try to ask or convince her over the course of the trilogy even if she picks up a boyfriend on team in ME2 because you didn't romance her in ME.
World Exploration
Bring back ground exploration with the mako or open up the ship yard and then the player can pick the mako, HH, or both and experience the world in free roam (mako only worlds) or linear (HH only worlds) if you pick a mako you can land and free roam 100% lots of worlds if you pick the boncytoy (aka HH) then you get 4 - 6 maps you can "explore" with its linear track of point A - B scanning missions.
Consequences of your actions
You know what didn't happen at the end of ME3 and what loosely happened in ME2? Really BW you need to look at things you want to make into the " hard choices" and critically look at if from several angles you know do a what if and then figure out how this choice is going to effect the game long and short term. Saving Legion and rewriting the geth should result in Legion being captured by the reapers indoctrinated and then him lying to both you and the geth you rewrote he then uploaded not a personality program into the geth but a reaper indoctrination program the end result they kill most of the Quarians and betray you and the war effort. Selling Legion means you don't go to the geth station they get killed rewrote by the reapers and the only outcome for Rannoch is kill the geth and reapers blocking their way no consensus. Or Sell Legion bring Tali and EDI or team dextro is with you to the Cerberus station hack him back to your side he then takes you to the geth consensus but he doesn't die and also does figure out a way to upload a personality program they help you defeat the reapers and do not betray the Quarians and war effort this third option is only available if two tech are part of your team.
Another example saving the Queen results in her spys prewarning Earth. Rachni are also available call in powers to help you in ground missions. There is no extra Queen mission Grunt is doing something else to fight the reapers that you can help with. If you kill her or release her this stupid mission never happens.
If we can learn of information on our enemy or what they do in game dialogue, books, audio, or books then let us (the hero) bring this info back up in the game.
More than anything, give us multiplayer coop. So if my friends jump into my game, they can play as garrus, or Ashley, or Liara (or whoever the new characters are) as I play the main protagonist. Borderlands is great in this regard. Life is more fun with friends.
I think they should keep Walters as lead, but get rid of everybody else that had a hand in shaping the series. Then they should get someone with a pedigree of mindless action games like the gears of war series to oversee the removal of the last few rpg elements.
As many other people, i would like to see a sequel of some sort, some time in the future. Here a quick overview of how i'd like to see the main setting done:
The main protagonist is the kid in the "grandpa sequence" of ME3. The game actually starts with exactly the same clip, the kid wondering if (s)he can go to the starts out there.
The game centers around a fairly large group of refugees and their descendants numbering several millions who were lost during the reaper war due to a catastrophic explosion of ME relays(we, the ME3 players, know exactly what happened, the refugees and their descendants obviously do not) in a very remote corner of the galaxy and stayed there for about 500 years - which is where the game starts.
Depending on the race the protagonist will be told either by his parents or grandparents(who got it from their grandparents etc) about all the wonderous worlds, species and technology that was lost to them, stories about the reaper conflict and some of the horrors of the war.
They will explain how the refugees were pursuited by reapers and how they were making the last desperate jump for escape through an ME relay when some sort of a catastrophic energy wave happened and catapulted the refugees into a very remote, uncharted corner of the galaxy. Until this day no one saw the reapers again, no one knows how the war went, no form of communication can reach the galactic communities and no signals from there were ever registered.
During the last 500 hundred years the regugees have found remnants of an old, apparently died out civilization, reverse engeneered some technology and were able to colonize a few of additional star systems using some sort of a prototype starship drive, which cannont bridge the huge gap to the galactic civilization, but makes the travel to neighbouring stars much easier and faster(maybe with some sort of a limitation, like needing to have a sort of a beacon near the star first, to lock on to - a little bit similar to a ME relay in the end result, but much more flexible and not as powerful).
The main protagonist, inspired by all the stories about the past, will thus have a motivation - a dream - to "find back to the stars" and rediscover "the lost worlds", so to say. Being a cross between Tony Stark from Ironman and Lara Croft (s)he will engage in adventurous archeologic activities, mercenary jobs and all sorts of undertakings for money and technology to bring that dream to life.
Now when it comes to all other details, such kind of setting offers lots of flexibility to what to create. There will be obviously conflicts of interests, conflicts between species, multi-species factions and attempts to control some sort of important ressources. Lots of new cultural developments as well as new technologies and rework/different apllications of old stuff.
There could be even organizations actively opposing any sort of attempts to find back
Maybe that whole area of space was even a sort of a giant shelter, supposed to hide something from someone(thus signal silence to and from other space regions), but then something different, completely unexpected, inside let the old inhabitants disappear.
Now gameplay-whise, i'd like to see a return of exploration like it was possible in ME1. You get in your spaceship, fly to a planet, drop a vehicle down there, drive a bit around, get to some settlements, explore giant underground complexes etc. Of course in a more thoroughly done fashion and with more details then it was made in ME1(barren landscapes got tiring fast).
Or maybe you land your whole spaceship to get some stuff on board, just like in that sequense of Prometeus:
Generally it would be great to feel the wonder of exploration again, like in ME1, where new planets were not already "known" by your character by ingame lore but where you also still had major hubs of civilization to fall back to(like Citadel and Omega were in ME2) for the traditional "i'm in the middle of lots of aliens and i don't care, yay!" feeling.
